Yes—but only the LTE version of the Galaxy Watch FE can call without your phone nearby. It needs an active cellular plan supported by your carrier. The Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model can handle calls through a connected phone, but it cannot make independent cellular calls. This is not a newly verified 2026 feature: Samsung announced the FE in 2024 and offered an LTE version.
Can the Galaxy Watch FE make calls without a phone?
The answer depends on which Watch FE you own and how it is connected:
- Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model: You can answer or place calls on the watch when it is connected to your phone. The phone is still handling the call. Some supported setups also allow remote calling over Wi-Fi, but that is not the same as having cellular service on the watch.
- LTE model: You can make and receive calls away from your phone after activating a compatible cellular plan. Carrier support, account eligibility and coverage all matter.
Samsung documents calling without a phone connection for LTE Galaxy Watch models, while noting that carrier support can vary. See Samsung’s guide to making and answering calls on a Galaxy watch and its LTE calling explanation and carrier caveats.
Check whether your Watch FE is Bluetooth or LTE
For U.S. models, the Bluetooth/Wi-Fi Galaxy Watch FE is in the SM-R861 family; LTE versions are in the SM-R866 family. Check the model number in the watch’s settings or on its box. The product name alone is not enough to establish that it has LTE hardware.

What you need for phone-free LTE calls
- An LTE Galaxy Watch FE, not the Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model.
- A compatible Android phone for pairing and setup. Samsung’s current U.S. phone compatibility page lists Android 10 or later for the Watch FE. Older launch material listed Android 6.0 or later, so check the current compatibility result for your specific phone.
- A carrier that supports the particular watch model and standalone voice calling, plus an eligible wearable plan or watch line.
- Completed cellular activation, typically through the Galaxy Wearable app and the carrier’s process, and network coverage where you want to call.
The Watch FE is not compatible with iPhones, according to Samsung. Compatibility with an Android phone also does not guarantee that every calling feature will work identically across phones, carriers and regions. For LTE activation and eSIM or network problems, use Samsung’s Galaxy Watch LTE activation support.

Many carriers offer smartwatch service associated with a phone account, sometimes with number-sharing features. Do not assume the watch always has the same number, caller ID, billing arrangement or standalone-use rules as your phone; confirm those details with your carrier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to make or answer a call
- Open the watch’s Phone app.
- Tap Keypad to enter a number, or Contacts to select someone.
- Tap the green call icon.
- If prompted on an LTE watch, choose whether to place the call through the phone or the watch.
For an incoming call, use the on-screen Answer or Decline control. During a call on a Wear OS model, open More options and tap Switch to phone to move it to the handset. Screens and menu labels may vary by software and provider. The watch’s microphone and speaker are convenient for brief calls, but Bluetooth earbuds are usually more practical for privacy or longer conversations.

Can you leave your phone at home?
With the LTE FE, an activated supported plan and coverage, you can leave your phone behind for calls and other supported cellular functions. That does not make the watch completely independent: a phone remains important for initial setup and management, and some apps and features may still depend on it.
With the Bluetooth/Wi-Fi FE, you cannot make an independent cellular call. A supported Wi-Fi remote-calling setup may work when the phone is away, depending on the devices, settings and carrier, but it is not a substitute for an active LTE watch line. Samsung notes that call-and-text functionality varies by provider; some configurations have additional carrier restrictions.

If direct calling does not work
- Verify the model. Check the number in settings or on the box. A U.S. SM-R861 is the Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model; it cannot make standalone cellular calls.
- Check for cellular service on the watch. Confirm that mobile network service is enabled and that the watch has a signal.
- Confirm activation. In Galaxy Wearable, check the cellular-plan setup and verify with the carrier that provisioning completed.
- Check carrier and account eligibility. LTE hardware alone does not ensure your carrier supports this FE variant or standalone voice calling on your plan.
- Check phone compatibility. Compare your phone with Samsung’s current requirements, and remember that supported features can vary by phone and provider.
- Restart the watch and phone, then install available app and watch software updates.
- Check call routing. If the watch offers a phone/watch choice, select the watch to test its cellular connection rather than routing through the handset.
- Try a location with better coverage. Weak or unavailable signal can prevent a call even when the plan is active.
- Contact the carrier before factory-resetting. Plan, account and eSIM provisioning issues often need carrier help.
Is the LTE model worth choosing?
The LTE FE is the relevant choice if you want to call during runs, walks or errands without carrying your phone—and your carrier supports the watch. Factor in the recurring plan cost as well as the purchase price. LTE calling and mobile-data use also draw more power than ordinary Bluetooth use, so battery life will depend on how heavily you use cellular service. A Bluetooth FE is a better fit if your phone is normally nearby and you do not want a watch plan.

For context, Samsung’s December 2024 U.S. price list gave the 40mm FE LTE a historical MSRP of $249.99; that is not a current sale-price quote. Samsung’s June 2026 MSRP list showed starting U.S. MSRPs of $299.99 for the 40mm Watch7 LTE and $399.99 for the 40mm Watch8 LTE. These are dated MSRP comparisons, not guaranteed current prices. Consider a newer model if its price, features or expected product longevity better fit your needs; check current listings and carrier compatibility before buying.
