The Withings ScanWatch Vitals is my favourite fitness tracker because it solves the problem many wearables create: it gives me useful health and activity data without turning my wrist into a second phone. Its traditional watch design, discreet grayscale display and claimed battery life of up to 35 days make it particularly appealing for sleep tracking and everyday wellness.

That preference comes with an important qualification. This is not the best choice for serious training, navigation or smartwatch features. Its GPS is connected to your phone, its display is deliberately small, and some of Withings’ richer guidance sits behind the optional Withings+ subscription. For the right person, however, those compromises are exactly what make the Vitals attractive.

The short version

  • Best for: sleep, walking, general activity, discreet health tracking and people tired of daily charging.
  • Why I like it: it looks like a conventional watch, tracks a broad range of health signals and stays unobtrusive.
  • Main compromise: it needs a phone for GPS and much of the wider experience.
  • Not for: serious runners, triathletes, navigation users or anyone seeking a full smartwatch.
  • Availability: Withings’ regional listings and prices differ. The Canadian shop listed the Vitals at C$289.95 when checked; that should not be treated as confirmation of current US availability.

Check the regional Withings listing before buying.

What the ScanWatch Vitals actually is

The Vitals is a hybrid smartwatch rather than a miniature smartphone. It combines conventional analog hands with a small 0.63-inch grayscale OLED display. The screen can show activity information, health readings, workout details and notifications, but it is not designed for browsing apps, reading long messages or following maps.

The case is stainless steel, the front uses sapphire glass and water resistance is rated at 5ATM. Regional specifications list 38mm and 42mm versions, approximate case weights of 34.6g and 52.6g without the strap, and thickness of roughly 12.89–13.39mm. Those details matter because the watch feels closer to an ordinary timepiece than a bright, attention-seeking smartwatch.

Health tracking happens in the background through a temperature sensor, accelerometer, multi-wavelength PPG sensor and altimeter. The Withings app is required for setup and for the fuller view of your data; the watch cannot be configured from a computer.

Why the hybrid design works

The strongest reason to prefer the Vitals is not a single sensor. It is the reduction in friction.

The analog face looks suitable with work or formal clothing, while the small screen discourages the reflexive checking that comes with a large smartwatch. Notifications are less intrusive, and the watch remains useful even when the phone is out of reach because it still tells the time like a normal watch.

That design is especially valuable overnight. A watch that does not need to be charged every evening is more likely to remain on the wrist for sleep tracking, which makes long-term trends more useful than an impressive feature list that is frequently interrupted by charging.

The battery advantage

Withings rates the ScanWatch Vitals for up to 35 days of battery life and lists charging time at approximately two hours. “Up to” is doing important work here. Battery performance changes with workout frequency, screen use, notifications, blood-oxygen measurements, respiratory scans, synchronization and connected GPS.

Even if your result is substantially below the headline figure, the ownership experience should still be less demanding than that of most full-featured smartwatches. The benefit is continuity: more nights tracked, fewer missed days during travel and less anxiety about whether the watch will survive tomorrow’s workout.

Do not evaluate the battery after a week of heavy GPS use and assume the advertised maximum is guaranteed. Withings’ support documentation describes usage conditions behind its battery estimate, so treat 35 days as a manufacturer maximum rather than a promise to every owner.

What it tracks

The Vitals is best understood as a broad wellness tracker with workout features. Depending on the market and enabled functions, it can provide:

  • Steps, distance, calories, elevation and activity duration.
  • Automatic activity detection and manually started workouts.
  • Workout heart rate and heart-rate zones.
  • Sleep duration, sleep stages and sleep scoring.
  • Heart-rate monitoring and high- or low-heart-rate notifications.
  • Temperature trends.
  • Blood-oxygen measurements and respiratory-disturbance information.
  • Cycle-tracking features and related temperature information where supported.

These measurements are useful for spotting patterns, not for diagnosing illness. Fit, movement, skin contact, physiology, firmware and algorithms can all affect results. Sleep stages, SpO2 readings and wellness scores should be treated as estimates. If a reading concerns you, or you have symptoms, speak with a qualified clinician rather than relying on the watch.

Do not automatically transfer ScanWatch 2 claims to the Vitals. Withings explicitly advertises ECG on ScanWatch 2, while the Vitals pages reviewed emphasize temperature, heart rate, sleep, SpO2, respiratory scans and workouts. Verify the exact model and country before assuming ECG is included.

Fitness tracking: capable, but not serious-sports focused

The Vitals can record walking, running, biking and canoeing using connected GPS. To record a route, it relies on the phone’s GPS rather than having equivalent independent GPS hardware in the watch. Bluetooth, location permissions and the phone’s power settings therefore become part of the workout experience.

For casual runs, walks and rides, that may be perfectly acceptable. For marathon training, trail navigation, triathlon preparation or structured intervals, it is a meaningful limitation. The small display also leaves less room for detailed workout data, maps, training plans and recovery metrics than a dedicated Garmin, Polar, COROS or full smartwatch.

That is why I would call the Vitals a health and lifestyle tracker with workout features, not a dedicated training watch.

How to set it up and use connected GPS

  1. Install the Withings app on a compatible iPhone or Android phone.
  2. Create or sign in to a Withings account.
  3. Pair the watch through the app and grant Bluetooth and location permissions.
  4. Configure notifications, goals and relevant sleep, temperature or cycle features.
  5. Charge it fully before judging battery performance.

For an outdoor route, open the watch’s Workout menu and select a distance-based activity. Keep the phone connected by Bluetooth, allow location access and avoid low-power mode. With Android 13 or later, Withings says you may need to open the app until Live View starts before beginning. Keep the app open when required for route recording, then press and hold the side button until the watch vibrates to stop or pause.

If GPS fails, check the following:

  • Bluetooth is connected and the Withings app is open.
  • Location access is enabled and precise location is allowed.
  • Battery-saving mode is disabled.
  • On iPhone, go to Withings App → Devices → ScanWatch Vitals → All Settings → Workout → Workout with GPS, then enable Always and Precise Location.
  • On Android, satisfy the app and Live View requirements described by Withings.

A dotted route usually means the phone did not receive enough GPS points. If the distance on the watch differs from the final app result, Withings says the post-processed app distance may be the more accurate value. See Withings’ GPS guidance and troubleshooting steps.

Withings+ changes the ownership calculation

The watch can be used without a Withings+ subscription, so the basic purchase is not automatically tied to a recurring fee. Withings+ adds features such as daily engagement, smart scoring, personalized guidance and other health experiences.

The Canadian regional offer reviewed included one free month followed by $9.95 per month or $99.50 per year in the page’s currency examples. Trial eligibility and pricing can vary by country, and the trial begins when the watch is installed through the mobile app. Check the renewal terms before accepting.

The practical question is not simply whether a subscription exists. It is whether the additional coaching and interpretation justify paying every year. If you only want tracking and long-term trends, the free experience may be sufficient. If recurring wellness fees irritate you, include that cost in the buying decision rather than judging the watch by its hardware price alone.

ScanWatch Vitals versus ScanWatch 2

Consideration ScanWatch Vitals ScanWatch 2
Positioning Health and lifestyle-focused hybrid watch More complete premium Withings hybrid
Battery claim Up to 35 days Up to 35 days
GPS Phone-connected GPS Phone-connected GPS
ECG Verify by market and exact model; not established by the Vitals pages reviewed Explicitly advertised by Withings
US price signal US availability was not clearly exposed in the reviewed storefront $369.95 on the reviewed US listing

The Vitals makes the most sense when its regional price is meaningfully lower and you mainly want sleep, activity and health trends. ScanWatch 2 is the safer choice if you specifically want the broader feature set advertised by Withings, including ECG. Compare the exact product page for your country rather than assuming the two watches share every sensor or clearance.

Who should buy the ScanWatch Vitals?

Choose it if you want a conventional watch appearance, long battery life, sleep tracking without nightly charging and useful health trends without a large bright screen. It is a particularly logical fit for walkers, casual runners, gym users and people who want to wear one device continuously.

It also makes sense if you already use Withings scales or other health products and value seeing information in one app. The phone requirement is less troublesome if your phone is normally with you.

Who should choose something else?

Choose a dedicated sports watch if you need onboard GPS, navigation, advanced interval programming, multisport profiles, training-load analysis or detailed recovery tools. Choose a full smartwatch if you want music, rich notifications, maps, third-party apps and a large responsive display.

Apple Watch is the stronger general smartwatch direction for compatible iPhone users; Garmin is generally the more appropriate route for serious training. Oura offers a different, screen-free sleep and recovery experience, while Fitbit remains a conventional activity-tracker alternative. Exact features, prices and subscription terms vary by model, so these are category distinctions rather than universal product rankings.

Final verdict

The Withings ScanWatch Vitals is my favourite fitness tracker because it makes consistent tracking easier without demanding that I live through a smartwatch screen. Its long battery life, traditional design and health-first approach are more valuable to me than maximum workout depth.

The decisive trade-off is simple: you give up independent GPS, rich smartwatch functions and serious training tools in exchange for a watch that is easier to wear, easier to sleep in and less distracting. If that is the balance you want, the Vitals is compelling. If it is not, its limitations will become obvious quickly.
