Google Glass was a lightweight wearable computer with a small monocular display, camera, microphones, speaker, touchpad and wireless connectivity. Its main purpose was to deliver brief, glanceable information while keeping the wearer’s hands free—not to create an immersive augmented-reality world.

This guide focuses mainly on Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2, the best-documented later model. Google stopped selling Glass Enterprise Edition on March 15, 2023, and ended official support on September 15, 2023. Existing devices may still work with installed software, but they are no longer supported or promised future updates. Google’s discontinuation notice explains the current status.

Quick answer: the 10 most important Google Glass features

  1. Monocular optical display
  2. Hands-free voice interaction
  3. Capacitive touchpad navigation
  4. Built-in camera for photos and video
  5. First-person video and remote collaboration
  6. Hands-free mono audio
  7. Beam-forming microphones
  8. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity
  9. Motion and orientation sensors
  10. Lightweight, modular enterprise design

Explorer Edition versus Enterprise Edition 2

“Google Glass” covers several generations. The early Explorer Edition was aimed largely at developers and early adopters. Later Glass Enterprise Edition products were designed for business workflows, and Enterprise Edition 2 added updated hardware and a more capable platform.

The specifications below should not be treated as universal to every Glass model. For example, the 640 × 360 display, 8-megapixel camera, USB-C charging, Qualcomm XR1 processor and Android Open Source Project 8.1 are Enterprise Edition 2 specifications. Google maintains separate documentation for Explorer Edition and Enterprise Edition.

  • 【BIGGEST: THE ULTIMATE IMMERSIVE GIANT — 174″ Screen, 58° FOV, 1200p】The largest virtual display in consumer XR. Period. A 174″ screen powered by Sony's latest-generation Micro-OLED panel pushes 1200p per eye at a class-leading 58° field of view with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Every frame is edge-to-edge sharp, silky-smooth, and jaw-droppingly vivid. It's like strapping an IMAX to your face.

The Beast gives you both — cranked to eleven.

1. Monocular optical display

Glass placed a small transparent display above the wearer’s right eye. On Enterprise Edition 2, the display resolution was 640 × 360 pixels, with an 83-degree diagonal field of view.

This screen was intended for short glances: work instructions, notifications, task prompts and application-specific information. It was not a phone-sized screen, a VR display or a full-field 3D overlay.

That distinction matters. Google described Enterprise Edition 2 as an assisted-reality wearable. Glass could place digital information in part of the wearer’s view, but it did not surround the user with a persistent virtual environment or provide the room-mapping capabilities associated with modern spatial-computing headsets. Google’s specifications document the display hardware.

2. Hands-free voice interaction

Voice input allowed users to interact with Glass without reaching for a phone, tablet or computer. That was particularly useful when a worker’s hands were occupied with tools, equipment, documents or patients.

In practice, voice capabilities depended on the Glass edition, installed software, network access and the organization’s deployment. It is therefore inaccurate to assume that every Glass model had the same modern voice assistant or Google service integration. Google’s Enterprise Edition 2 setup documentation describes the device’s interaction model.

3. Touchpad navigation

A capacitive touchpad beside the right temple provided a physical alternative to voice commands. Standard Enterprise Edition 2 gestures included:

  • Tap: activate the display or select an action.
  • Swipe forward or backward: move through cards, screens or menus.
  • Swipe down: go back, cancel certain actions or return to the Home screen.
  • Double tap: wake the display after it turned off from inactivity.

These were standard gestures rather than a guarantee that every custom enterprise application behaved identically. Organizations and partners could tailor the software experience for particular jobs.

(Auxiliary route guidance, prioritizing safe observation of the real-world environment.)

4. Built-in camera for photos and video

Enterprise Edition 2 included an 8-megapixel color camera capable of recording video up to 1080p at 30 frames per second. It had fixed focus, an f/2.4 aperture and an 83-degree diagonal field of view, with best focus at approximately 0.6 metres.

The camera’s main advantage was not image quality comparable with a modern smartphone. It was the camera’s position: the wearer could document a task or capture a first-person view without holding a device.

That made it useful for work records, inspections, training material and visual assistance. Enterprise Edition 2 also included a green privacy LED associated with camera activity, but the indicator did not replace consent, workplace rules or applicable law.

5. First-person video and remote collaboration

Glass could share or stream the wearer’s point of view through compatible applications. A technician, inspector or healthcare worker could show a remote colleague what was happening while keeping both hands available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Potential applications included:

  • Equipment maintenance and repair
  • Manufacturing and warehouse work
  • Field service and remote inspection
  • Healthcare workflows
  • Guided training and procedures
  • Remote expert support

This was not a universal, always-available built-in service. It required a compatible application, network connection and suitable organizational deployment. Google’s pre-installed Meet on Glass application was not promised ongoing support after the Enterprise Edition support end date. Google discussed the enterprise platform and deployment model in its Enterprise Edition 2 announcement.

6. Hands-free audio

Enterprise Edition 2 used a mono speaker positioned inside the battery pod behind the wearer’s ear. It also supported USB audio and Bluetooth audio, including Bluetooth HFP support.

Audio could deliver spoken prompts, notifications, voice feedback and instructions without requiring the user to look down at another screen. However, the mono speaker was designed for wearable prompts and communication—not high-fidelity music or immersive stereo sound.

XREAL xbx a01+ AR Glasses, 147'' Big-Screen Display for Movies & Gaming
  • YOUR PRIVATE 147” BIG SCREEN, ANYWHERE — Plug the a01+ into your phone, tablet, handheld, or laptop and a giant 147” screen appears in front of you—for movies, gaming, or getting work done on the couch, on a flight, or in bed. A true portable display you wear, in a soda-can-sized 210g case that drops in your pocket.
  • ALWAYS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU — The screen follows your view with smooth, stabilized tracking and stays centered as you look around—nothing to anchor or set up, and no drift to reset. Press play and your big screen is simply there.
  • 62G — LIGHT ENOUGH TO FORGET — At just 62g, with three nose-pad sizes and flexible temples, the a01+ stays comfortable through a long movie or flight, even lying down.
  • LOOKS LIKE SUNGLASSES, NOT A GADGET — A slim, sunglasses-style frame with a signature semi-transparent chassis and neon logo—light and low-profile enough to actually wear out.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR USB-C GEAR — No Battery to Charge — Connects and powers over a single USB-C DisplayPort cable: iPhone 15/16/17, iPad, DP-capable Android phones, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Mac and PC. Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 and older (Lightning) iPhones need an adapter. For long phone sessions, add the XREAL Hub to charge and watch at once.

7. Beam-forming microphones

Three near-field beam-forming microphones helped Glass capture speech in a compact wearable form factor. This was important because voice control and remote communication were central to hands-free operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Beam forming could improve voice capture, but it could not eliminate every environmental problem. Performance varied with machinery noise, wind, distance, room acoustics and the software using the microphones.

8. Wireless connectivity

Enterprise Edition 2 supported dual-band Wi-Fi using IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 5.0, with Bluetooth HFP audio support.

These connections allowed Glass to communicate with networks, accessories and compatible applications. They also explain why “hands-free” did not mean “independent of the internet.” Cloud services, remote collaboration and many enterprise applications depended on network access and the systems behind the deployment.

9. Motion and orientation sensors

Enterprise Edition 2 contained a 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis gyroscope and 3-axis magnetometer. Applications could use these sensors to respond to movement, orientation and device position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They supported contextual interfaces and specialized enterprise software, but they did not make Glass equivalent to a modern mixed-reality headset with sophisticated room mapping or full six-degrees-of-freedom spatial tracking.

10. Lightweight, modular, work-oriented design

Enterprise Edition 2 weighed 46 grams without its frame. The Glass module could be attached to separately sold frames, including options intended for prescription lenses and demanding work environments.

Google’s published hardware specifications included an 800 mAh battery, USB-C charging, fast charging to at least 50% in approximately 20 minutes, a Qualcomm XR1 platform, 3 GB of LPDDR4 memory and 32 GB of eMMC storage. The device was rated IP53, meaning limited protection against dust ingress and water spray—not waterproofing.

The modular frame approach mattered in industrial settings because an organization could select eyewear suited to its workflow. It also means that a used Glass unit and its frame should not automatically be assumed to be interchangeable.

Was Google Glass really augmented reality?

Only in a limited sense. Glass overlaid digital information in a small area above one eye, so it could reasonably be described as an early augmented-reality wearable. But it was not immersive AR: it did not fill the user’s vision, place persistent 3D objects throughout a room or provide the broad binocular view of newer spatial devices.

“Assisted reality” is usually the more precise description for Enterprise Edition 2. The device showed just enough information to assist a task while leaving the wearer’s surroundings largely unobstructed.

Could Glass work without a phone?

Enterprise Edition 2 was an Android-based device with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, so it was not simply a passive phone accessory. Nevertheless, independence varied by application and workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Many services required a network, a paired accessory or an external enterprise system. The device used Android Open Source Project 8.1 Oreo—not a current Android release—and its application ecosystem was not equivalent to the Google Play experience on a modern smartphone.

Could users install apps?

Yes, but app availability was highly deployment-dependent. Enterprise Edition 2 supported tailored applications, partner solutions and organization-specific provisioning. Google also provided documentation covering app installation, firmware, device resets and Glass development.

This was closer to managed enterprise hardware than a plug-and-play consumer phone. Third parties were responsible for developing and maintaining many applications, so a used device may not have access to the software that originally made it useful.

Comfort, safety and privacy

Comfort

Glass was designed to be lightweight, but no wearable is universally comfortable. Experience depended on frame style, nose-pad adjustment, prescription lenses, fit, battery-pod placement, temperature and the wearer’s tolerance for having a display above one eye. “Designed for extended wear” should not be confused with a guarantee of all-day comfort.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy

The camera and microphones could capture or transmit the wearer’s surroundings. The green camera privacy LED provided a visible recording signal on Enterprise Edition 2, but responsible use still required attention to:

  • Bystander consent
  • Workplace recording policies
  • Hospitals, factories and other sensitive locations
  • Local privacy and data-protection law
  • How third-party applications stored or transmitted data

Google’s safety guidance also warns against distraction and emphasizes following applicable safety practices. Glass should not be used while driving or operating dangerous machinery if the display or audio could interfere with the task.

What Google Glass did—and did not—do well

Its strongest idea was the combination of a first-person camera, glanceable prompts, voice and touch controls, and hands-free operation. That combination could be valuable when a worker could not repeatedly handle a phone or tablet.

Its weaknesses were equally important: a small display, limited battery capacity, fixed-focus camera, software dependence, network dependence, enterprise-oriented setup, privacy concerns and the end of official support. Glass was never a general replacement for a smartphone, laptop or modern AR headset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Google Glass still available?

Google no longer sells Glass Enterprise Edition. Sales ended on March 15, 2023, and official support ended on September 15, 2023. A used unit might still boot or run installed software, but buyers should expect battery degradation, missing or incompatible frames, outdated firmware, dead cloud services, application compatibility issues and no official repair or replacement path.

For that reason, used Glass is best viewed as a historical device or a specialist piece of legacy hardware—not as a supported Google product to buy casually.

Modern alternatives

There is no single direct replacement because current products target different use cases:

  • Vuzix M400: an enterprise-focused option for hands-free, camera-based assistance. Vuzix lists it on its official smart-glasses store.
  • XREAL One or One Pro: display-first glasses for gaming, video and portable productivity. They are closer to a wearable large screen than to Glass’s enterprise camera workflow. See the official XREAL store.
  • Android XR intelligent eyewear: Google’s newer direction for AI-enabled eyewear. Google announced related products for fall 2026, but the cited announcement did not confirm a price or immediate availability. It is not a continuation of discontinued Glass Enterprise Edition. See Google’s announcement and Android XR.
