Yes—AirPods Pro 2 can still be worth keeping after two years, but they are no longer an automatic buy for new customers. For existing owners, battery condition, charging reliability, fit and ANC matter more than the age of the design. Keep them if they still cover your normal day. Repair or replace one component when only an earbud, case or ear tips are failing. For new buyers, choose Pro 2 only at a substantial discount; at or near Apple’s current U.S. price of $249 for AirPods Pro 3, the newer model is the better value.
What “two years” means for AirPods Pro 2
A pair bought around August 2024 has two years of ownership, but AirPods Pro 2 hardware first launched in September 2022. There are also two charging-case versions: the original Lightning model and the later USB-C revision. A two-year-old pair could be either, depending on when and where it was purchased.

The USB-C version is the preferable Pro 2 model for most buyers. It fits more easily into a modern USB-C charging setup and supports lossless audio with Apple Vision Pro under Apple’s specified conditions. That does not make it a completely new generation, however: USB-C is mainly a convenience and compatibility improvement, not by itself a reason for an existing owner to upgrade. The biggest two-year issue is battery wear
Apple rates a new AirPods Pro 2 USB-C model for up to six hours of listening with Active Noise Cancellation enabled, or up to 5.5 hours with Spatial Audio and head tracking enabled, under Apple’s test conditions. That is a new-unit rating—not a promise that a heavily used pair will still deliver six hours after two years.
Actual runtime depends on volume, ANC or Transparency mode, Spatial Audio, microphone use, phone calls, temperature, firmware, battery age and charging habits. There is no consumer-facing AirPods battery-health percentage equivalent to the Battery Health screen on an iPhone, so the practical question is whether the earbuds still cover your routine.
A commute, work session or exercise period that used to fit comfortably but now triggers a low-battery warning is meaningful degradation. A pair that still lasts through your normal day may remain perfectly usable even if its theoretical capacity is lower. Uneven left/right runtime can indicate normal unequal use, a dirty charging contact, a poor seal or one aging earbud; it does not automatically mean the complete set is finished.

A repeatable home battery check
- Fully charge both earbuds and the case.
- Confirm that both earbuds show a full charge.
- Play the same audio continuously at a fixed, moderate volume.
- Use ANC for the comparison, since that is the mode most Pro users rely on.
- Record when the first earbud gives a low-battery warning or stops.
- Repeat the test once to rule out a poor seal, dirty contact or an inaccurate one-off reading.
This is a practical comparison, not an Apple-certified battery test. Test each earbud separately if one side consistently dies much earlier.

Is AirPods Pro 2 ANC still competitive?
Yes, for everyday use. Pro 2 remain useful for commuting, offices, aircraft cabins, HVAC noise and other steady low-frequency sounds. They are not necessarily the best noise-cancelling earbuds available in 2026, though. Independent testing from RTINGS finds AirPods Pro 3 better overall, including stronger ANC and longer continuous playback.
Do not assume that a perceived decline is caused by firmware. ANC performance depends heavily on ear-tip seal, tip wear, clogged microphone or speaker openings, the selected mode and the listener’s expectations. Pro 2 can also seem weaker when the ear tips have hardened or no longer fit as they did when new.
When ANC suddenly seems worse
- Open the Bluetooth controls and confirm Noise Control is set to Noise Cancellation, not Adaptive, Transparency or Off.
- Try another ear-tip size and run the ear-tip fit test.
- Clean the earbuds using Apple’s instructions; do not push debris into the meshes.
- Check whether the problem affects one earbud more than the other.
- Test against steady noise such as an air conditioner rather than voices or irregular sounds.
- Reset and re-pair the earbuds only after checking fit and cleanliness.
- If ANC remains abnormally weak, contact Apple or an authorized service provider instead of assuming a setting or update is responsible.
Sound quality and fit after two years
AirPods Pro 2 remain broadly competitive for mainstream listening. The long-term problems that matter most are usually not that the original tuning has suddenly become obsolete, but that tips wear out, speaker meshes collect debris, fit changes or one channel develops distortion, imbalance or dropouts.
Replace ear tips if they are stretched, torn, hardened or unable to maintain a seal. Before judging bass or ANC, fit fresh tips and inspect both earbuds. Pro 3 may be the better overall product, but a sound upgrade is not guaranteed to feel dramatic for someone who already likes Pro 2’s tuning and fit. RTINGS also notes that fit preference is subjective; some listeners may prefer Pro 2’s less-deep fit.

Apple’s current AirPods Pro 3 listing supplies the price, battery and feature claims above. The Pro 2 case for new buyers therefore depends on the discount: the further its price is from $249, the easier it is to justify its older design and shorter rated runtime.
Hearing-health features add useful life—but have limits
AirPods Pro 2 support Hearing Test, Hearing Aid and Hearing Protection in compatible configurations. Availability depends on supported hardware, current firmware, a compatible iPhone or iPad, the required operating-system version and regional authorization. Apple lists the relevant compatibility requirements in its technical specifications.
These features are not universal substitutes for professional medical care and are not suitable for every type of hearing loss. Hearing Protection also depends on proper fit, maintenance and battery charge. Apple’s hearing-protection data sheet warns that an improper fit reduces effectiveness and that the feature is unavailable when the AirPods have no battery charge.

- Clean the ear tips separately and replace them when they no longer seal.
- Keep microphone and speaker openings free of debris.
- Wipe away sweat or moisture before putting the earbuds in the case.
- Do not charge or store them while wet.
- Inspect the case charging port and the earbud charging contacts.
- Make sure each earbud is seated and charging when the lid is closed.
- Remember that sweat and water resistance are not waterproofing.
Keep, repair or replace?
Keep your AirPods Pro 2
Keep them when runtime still fits your normal day, both earbuds charge reliably, ANC and Transparency work normally, and the case remains healthy. This is especially sensible for owners already using an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch or other Apple devices, because fast pairing, automatic switching, Siri, Find My and Personalized Spatial Audio remain useful.

Replace an individual component
Service is the logical first step when only one earbud is defective or lost, the case has failed, or the tips are worn. Clean and test the contacts before paying for service. Apple may provide a replacement or exchange rather than replace a user-accessible battery, and out-of-warranty prices vary by country, model, damage type, taxes and service channel. Compare the confirmed service quote with the price of a new discounted set.
If you have AppleCare+, the cited U.S. terms cover consumed-battery service during the plan term when the battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity; accidental damage has separate service fees. Coverage and eligibility depend on the plan and region. Do not assume a current Pro 3 AppleCare+ purchase option applies retroactively to an existing Pro 2 pair. See Apple’s AppleCare+ terms.
Buy a new set
Replace the whole set when both earbuds have poor runtime, charging failures recur, microphones or ANC are unreliable, the pair is out of coverage, or the repair cost approaches a discounted replacement. Pro 3 is the stronger upgrade when you want longer battery life, improved ANC, heart-rate sensing or its newer fit and durability characteristics.
Who should still buy AirPods Pro 2?
Pro 2 remain a sensible purchase for an iPhone user who finds the USB-C version at a substantial discount, prefers its fit, wants strong ANC and Apple integration, and does not need eight-hour earbud runtime or heart-rate sensing. They are a poor choice when the price is only slightly below Pro 3, when all-day battery life is essential, or when the buyer mainly uses Android and would not benefit from Apple’s ecosystem.
Used and refurbished pairs require extra caution. Battery condition is difficult to verify before purchase, replacement tips do not prove authenticity, and a serial-number check alone does not eliminate counterfeit risk. Favor official refurbished inventory or a seller with a meaningful return policy. Apple’s refurbished Pro 2 availability and pricing are market-specific; for example, an official Canadian listing does not establish U.S. availability or terms.

- Current owner: Keep Pro 2 if they still last through your routine and ANC, fit and charging are normal.
- Battery-degraded owner: Clean, test and obtain a service quote; upgrade to Pro 3 if both earbuds are failing or the cost gap is small.
- New buyer: Buy Pro 2 only at a meaningful discount, not merely because an old review calls them the flagship.
- Lightning owner: Upgrade for USB-C only if convenience combines with battery wear, ANC needs, fitness requirements or attractive trade-in pricing.
- Heavy user: Pro 3’s longer rated runtime can justify upgrading sooner, especially for flights and long workdays.
- Android user: Pro 2 will work as Bluetooth earbuds, but much of their ecosystem value is lost.
- Hearing-feature user: Confirm regional, device and software eligibility, and treat the features as assistive tools—not a replacement for professional evaluation.
