Ultrahuman announced an atrial fibrillation (AFib) detection feature for its Ring AIR on July 16, 2024, marketing it as the first AFib detector in a smart ring. The distinction is the ring form factor—not wearable AFib monitoring overall. The feature is designed to flag possible rhythm patterns during sleep; it is not a diagnosis or a substitute for an ECG or medical care.
What Ultrahuman launched
The Ring AIR is the physical smart ring. Its PowerPlugs are software features that use data collected by the ring, and AFib Detection is a premium PowerPlug rather than a capability included automatically with every ring. Ultrahuman describes the feature as overnight heart-rhythm monitoring with daily reports, using its UltraSignal platform and data from the ring’s sensors.
The launch was part of a broader modular feature ecosystem that also included tools for caffeine timing, vitamin D, jet lag, circadian alignment and cycle-related insights. AFib Detection is the medically sensitive one: its result should be understood as a screening signal, not a clinical conclusion.

Atrial fibrillation is an irregular rhythm originating in the heart’s upper chambers, the atria. It can be persistent or occur in episodes. Some people notice palpitations, fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness or reduced exercise tolerance; others have no symptoms. AFib can increase the risk of blood clots and stroke, which is why suspected cases need proper medical assessment.

How a ring can screen for AFib without recording an ECG
The Ring AIR uses photoplethysmography (PPG): optical sensors detect changes in blood volume beneath the skin as each pulse passes. Software can assess the timing and regularity of those pulse signals. Ultrahuman says its feature also uses temperature and accelerometer data to help interpret the readings and monitor overnight, when movement may be lower.
- Optical sensors collect pulse-related signals from the finger.
- Software examines pulse timing for patterns that may be associated with AFib.
- Motion and temperature readings provide additional context for the signal.
- The app may report a possible AFib pattern, depending on the feature’s availability and configuration in the user’s market.
PPG measures the pulse at the finger; it does not directly record the heart’s electrical activity. An electrocardiogram (ECG) records electrical signals and is commonly used to confirm a rhythm diagnosis. A wearable screening result can be a reason to seek assessment, but it is not interchangeable with a diagnostic ECG.

What “world-first” means
Ultrahuman said the Ring AIR was the world’s first smart ring capable of detecting AFib. That is a claim about the smart-ring category, not the first wearable AFib feature: smartwatches had already offered AFib-related functions. The available reporting does not establish an independent audit of every smart ring worldwide, so “world-first” is best attributed to the company rather than treated as independently proven.

The retrieved official regional PowerPlugs page listed AFib Detection in Europe, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Switzerland and other regions. It described launches in the United States, United Arab Emirates and India as planned, rather than confirming access there. Because that page may have changed since it was retrieved, check the current PowerPlugs listing or the Ultrahuman app in your country before relying on availability. Access in one market does not establish regulatory authorization in another.

Price: ring hardware and AFib feature are separate
Ultrahuman’s retrieved Ring AIR buying page listed the ring at about US$349 and said core ring data does not require a mandatory subscription. A regional PowerPlugs page listed AFib Detection at $4.90 per month. That is a regional price signal, not a guaranteed price everywhere: currency, taxes, app-store billing, eligibility and current pricing may differ. Do not assume the ring purchase includes this premium PowerPlug.
What to do if the ring flags a possible irregular rhythm
- Do not panic or treat a single notification as a diagnosis.
- Save or export the report if the app offers that option, and contact a healthcare professional—particularly if alerts recur or you have symptoms.
- A clinician can decide whether confirmation with a 12-lead ECG, ambulatory monitor or another test is appropriate.
- Do not start, stop or change blood thinners or rhythm medicines based only on a ring result.
- Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath or possible stroke symptoms.
Limits readers should keep in mind
Wearable pulse readings can be affected by movement, poor fit or skin contact, low peripheral circulation, sensor noise and other irregular beats. Those factors can contribute to false alerts. The reverse is also possible: an intermittent episode may happen outside an overnight monitoring window, during movement, or when the sensor has poor contact. A report that does not flag AFib cannot rule it out.

The retrieved product pages do not provide enough detail to state a specific sensitivity, specificity, study population or regulatory authorization. Terms such as “medical-grade report” do not by themselves establish a particular regulator’s clearance, clinical performance or diagnostic status. Those are separate questions that depend on the jurisdiction and evidence.
Ring or smartwatch?
The Ring AIR’s appeal is discreet, passive overnight monitoring in a ring form factor. A smartwatch may suit someone who wants a screen, visible alerts, an on-demand ECG where supported, or features such as emergency calling. Neither category should be treated as a reason to delay care for symptoms. If a clinician needs to investigate suspected AFib, a clinical ECG or ambulatory monitor is the medical pathway—not choosing a consumer wearable alone.
For product context, Ultrahuman lists the Ring AIR with infrared PPG, a skin-temperature sensor and six-axis motion sensors. Its manufacturer specifications also state four to six days of battery life, around 180 minutes to charge from empty, a weight of roughly 2.4–3.6 grams depending on size, Bluetooth Low Energy 5, and compatibility with iOS 15 or later and Android 6 or later. These are company specifications, not independent test results, and software requirements can change.
To activate a PowerPlug, Ultrahuman’s documented instructions say to open the app, tap “Activate more PowerPlugs” from the ring homepage, browse the features and tap “Get” beside the desired one; paid features proceed through the relevant app-store purchase flow. App labels may change, so look for the PowerPlugs or add-ons section if the wording differs.
