The OM System Tough TG-7 is a convenient choice for photographing a watch underwater in a pool, tank or shallow open water. Its dedicated underwater modes and close-focusing capability make dial and bezel details accessible without a housing, while its small sensor and near-axis built-in flash limit what it can do in difficult light. For the clearest results, stage the watch securely, work in calm water, move the camera close and shape reflections with off-axis light.
This guide focuses on photographing watches underwater—not underwater cameras or watch collecting. A controlled still life is the easiest starting point; wrist and swimming shots are harder because both subject and camera move.
Why the TG-7 suits shallow-water watch photography
OM System rates the TG-7 as waterproof to 15 m and lists a 25–100 mm-equivalent lens, RAW capture and macro capabilities that include focusing as close as 1 cm in Super Macro/Microscope use. It also offers dedicated underwater modes, manual focus, focus peaking, focus bracketing and focus stacking. Those features make it a practical, compact tool for close work. That specification is not a promise of effortless product photography. At very close distances, depth of field is shallow, bubbles and particles become conspicuous, and a watch crystal or polished case can reflect the camera and lights. The TG-7’s small sensor also gives less latitude for high-ISO work and background control than a larger-sensor camera with a macro lens. Think of it as a low-friction shallow-water macro camera, not a complete commercial underwater studio.

Start with a stable, simple setup
For a first shoot, use a clear tank or calm, shallow pool. It is easier to control reflections and debris in still water than in moving open water. Set the watch on a non-abrasive acrylic, ceramic or silicone support; avoid bare metal clamps and rough surfaces that could mark a case or bracelet. Secure the strap so it cannot drift over the dial, and remove bubbles from the crystal, bezel and bracelet before framing.
Choose the image before submerging the camera:
- Dial portrait: Face the watch toward the lens, with the hands, indices and logo readable.
- Three-quarter view: Turn the watch slightly to show case thickness, lugs, crown and bezel.
- Macro detail: Isolate an engraving, lume plot, bezel marking or surface texture.
- Wrist or action shot: Expect more motion and use a faster shutter speed; these are less forgiving than a staged still life.
A dark background can make a dive watch feel dramatic; a light neutral background is often better for a catalog-like image. Keep the underwater setting visible but subordinate to the watch. Avoid loose grit unless it is deliberately part of the composition, and do not rest a metal bracelet on concrete or stone.
Choose the right TG-7 mode
For a full watch or dial, start with Underwater Macro. The TG-7 manual also describes Underwater Snapshot for natural-light underwater scenes, Underwater Wide for broader views, Underwater Microscope for very close details, and Underwater HDR for high-contrast scenes. - Underwater Microscope: Try it for a small feature such as a lume plot or bezel tooth. The close working distance makes framing, lighting and bubble control more demanding; 1 cm focusing capability does not mean every watch composition is practical from that distance.
- Aperture Priority or Program: Useful when you want more exposure control, especially when shooting RAW for later color correction.
- Underwater HDR: Usually avoid it if the watch, water, bubbles or photographer may move, because it combines multiple exposures.
Underwater presets are starting points, not guarantees of accurate color in every depth or lighting condition. Compare the result with your intended look and adjust lighting and white balance as needed.
Starting settings for a watch
Use these as trial settings, not universal rules. Water clarity, depth, watch angle, light and subject movement all change the exposure you need.

- Mode: Underwater Macro for a close still life; consider Aperture Priority or Program if you want more control over exposure and RAW editing.
- Shutter speed: Start near 1/125 s for a stationary setup. If water, strap or camera is moving, try 1/250 s or faster and review exposure.
- ISO: Begin at the lowest practical setting; raise it if the shutter speed becomes too slow. Higher ISO brings more visible noise.
- Aperture: Use a middle aperture when available to balance depth of field and image quality. If the front of the dial is sharp but the case is not, try a less extreme close-up or a focus stack in a static setup.
- Focus: Use a single AF target on a high-contrast index or hand. If reflections or close distance make autofocus hunt, lock focus, try manual focus or move slightly farther away.
- Flash and light: First take a frame without artificial light in bright, clean shallow water. Add controlled light only if the dial needs it.
- File and drive: RAW+JPEG gives more editing latitude. Use single shots while composing; a short sequence can help when timing a moving subject.
Brace the camera on a stable support if possible, without touching the watch. The TG-7’s listed shutter range is 1/2 to 1/2000 s, but the useful exposure depends on the available light and movement. Check the official specifications.
Lighting and reflection control
Lighting is often the decisive part of a watch image. A crystal and polished case behave like reflective surfaces: a light aimed straight at the dial may appear as a bright patch that obscures the hands, logo or indices. Rotate the watch a few degrees and move the light sideways, above or below the lens axis until the reflection shifts off the part of the dial you need to show.

Start with natural light for a clean, shallow-water look. If the dial is dim or loses contrast, add one off-axis LED; two lights can give more even coverage. A larger, diffused source usually creates gentler highlights than a small bare point source. A black card outside the frame can create a controlled dark reflection in the crystal, while a white card can add a clean highlight to a polished case edge. Check the particular crystal—sapphire, mineral and acrylic can behave differently—and judge the actual watch rather than assuming one angle will work for every model.
The TG-7’s built-in flash sits close to the lens. In water containing suspended particles, near-axis light can illuminate those particles and produce bright specks known as backscatter. The risk is not inevitable, but it rises with dirty water and direct, near-lens illumination. Move closer to reduce the amount of water between camera and subject, wait for disturbed sediment to settle, and move or diffuse the light. For close macro work, the compatible LG-1 LED Light Guide or FD-1 Flash Diffuser may be relevant; neither replaces a properly positioned off-axis light when you need to shape reflections. The PT-059 housing is aimed at users who need a housing-based diving setup, not a pool session where the bare camera is within its stated limits. The official accessory listing also includes a float strap. Check OM System’s accessory listing for compatibility and current availability. Wide-angle converters are generally poor purchases for a tight watch portrait unless the intended image gives substantial space to the surrounding environment.

A repeatable shooting workflow
- Prepare the gear. Charge the battery, install a memory card, clean the lens glass and inspect the camera’s door seal. Clean the watch crystal and case, too.
- Build the scene dry. Arrange the support, background and lights before putting the camera in water. Take a dry test frame from the intended distance to check focus and composition.
- Secure and angle the watch. Make the dial readable, keep the strap in place and turn the watch slightly if a reflection covers an important detail.
- Enter calm water slowly. Wait for bubbles to clear from the camera lens and watch crystal. Avoid stirring sediment.
- Take an available-light test. Start in Underwater Macro, focus on a high-contrast dial detail and make one frame without flash.
- Add light deliberately. If the dial looks dark or flat, move a light off-axis and take another frame. Adjust the watch angle as well as the light position.
- Review at magnification. Check that the important dial detail is sharp and that highlights do not erase the hands, logo or markings. Make small angle changes and take variations.
- Use stacking only if the scene is still. If a close view has too little depth of field, stabilize the camera and watch before trying a focus stack.
For composition, do not default to looking down from above: shoot level with or slightly below the watch when that shows its shape better. Leave space in the direction the watch points, avoid an accidental strap crop and use the bezel as a frame without letting bright reflections cover key text. When focus stacking helps—and when it does not
Close macro images can have too little depth of field to keep the dial, bezel and case acceptably sharp in one exposure. Focus stacking can increase the apparent depth of field by combining a sequence focused at different distances. It only works well when the watch, camera, water and reflections remain sufficiently stable.
- Place the watch on a rigid support and stop the water from moving.
- Stabilize the TG-7 on a firm tray, arm or tripod-like support.
- Select Focus Stacking in the camera and set a short waiting time to reduce handling vibration.
- Start with a modest number of frames. Focus on the nearest important part of the subject, then start the sequence without touching the camera.
- Inspect both the first image and the composite. The manual notes that the camera records the first shot as well as the composite.
- Reject the stack if bubbles, water movement or changing reflections create doubled edges or artifacts.
Do not use stacking for a swimmer’s wrist or a watch drifting in moving water. A coherent single exposure is usually preferable to a composite with misaligned hands, markings or crystal edges. The TG-7 manual gives the camera’s Focus Stacking Settings procedure.

Water absorbs and scatters light, so underwater photographs can lose contrast and take on a blue or green cast. RAW files offer more flexibility than JPEG-only files when correcting color and exposure. - Correct white balance or reduce an excessive blue-green cast.
- Restore contrast conservatively and recover dial highlights where possible.
- Add modest local clarity or texture to indices and bezel markings rather than sharpening the entire image aggressively.
- Remove backscatter spots selectively, especially near the watch.
- Straighten the dial and crop deliberately. Neutralize the background separately if needed.
- Keep lume, colored bezels and red accents true to the physical watch; compare the edit with the watch itself instead of pushing saturation for effect.
Color correction cannot restore detail lost to clipped reflections or severe blur. Solve those problems at capture by changing the angle, light or shutter speed.

Protect both camera and watch
OM System’s 15 m waterproof rating is a stated product specification, not a guarantee that every camera remains watertight indefinitely. Before each session, inspect the battery/USB-card door seal and sealing surfaces for hair, sand, lint or salt crystals. Close and lock the door fully. Do not open the camera while it is wet, and do not change the battery immediately after saltwater use. Rinse the camera with fresh water after saltwater or chlorinated-water use, dry the exterior completely before opening a door, and avoid abrupt hot-to-cold transitions that can cause condensation. A float strap can help recover a dropped camera in open water.
If the camera may have flooded, remove it from the water immediately. Do not open the battery/card door while it may contain water; turn it off if possible, do not charge or keep using it, and contact OM System service. A flood is not necessarily recoverable.
The camera’s rating says nothing about the watch’s condition. Check the watch manufacturer’s water-resistance guidance and the watch’s service condition; an old, damaged or unserviced watch may not be safe to immerse simply because its caseback carries a water-resistance marking. Secure a screw-down crown where applicable, and do not operate crowns or pushers underwater unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Avoid hot, chlorinated or salt water when the shoot does not require it, rinse and dry the watch as its maker directs, and keep leather straps out of water unless they are specifically intended for it.

Choose the bare TG-7 if convenience and shallow-water macro matter more than maximum image quality. Add lighting when the watch looks dull, the water is dim, or polished surfaces need deliberate highlights. Consider a larger system when the assignment calls for professional strobes, extensive control or high-end advertising files.
Quick fixes for common problems
- A reflection hides the dial: Rotate the watch a few degrees, move the light off-axis, or use a larger diffused source. A black or white card outside the frame can help shape the reflection.
- White dots fill the image: Move closer, wait for disturbed particles to settle, use cleaner water and move or diffuse the light away from the lens axis.
- The dial is sharp but the case is soft: Reduce magnification, move back and crop later, or try focus stacking if everything can remain still. Choose the most important focus plane if not.
- Autofocus hunts: Focus on a contrasty index or hand, use one AF target, lock focus or switch to manual focus; moving slightly farther away can help.
- The image looks cyan or gray: Work shallower if possible, add closer artificial light and correct white balance and contrast from RAW.
- A focus stack has doubled edges: Movement changed the frames. Stabilize the scene, use fewer frames or return to a single exposure.
After the shoot
After removing the camera from water, rinse it with fresh water after saltwater or chlorinated exposure, dry the exterior fully and inspect the lens and door area. Transfer files with a card reader or OM System’s OI.Share app, and back up original RAW files before editing.
