You can refresh a Samsung Galaxy Watch without replacing it: change the watch face, choose useful complications, organize swipeable tiles, manage apps and notifications, adjust the display, or swap the band. The exact menus depend on the model and software. Galaxy Watch4 and newer models use Wear OS; older Galaxy Watch generations generally use Tizen, so their instructions and store options differ. Samsung’s platform guide explains the distinction.
What you can customize
Think of customization as several separate layers, rather than just changing the clock face:
- Watch face: The clock’s layout, background, colors, hands, and other visual details. The controls depend on the face; some cannot be edited.
- Complications: Small information fields or app shortcuts placed in supported face slots—for example, the date, battery, or a next appointment.
- Tiles: Larger swipeable panels for things such as workouts, health, music, or calendar. Samsung called these widgets on some older software.
- Apps and notifications: Install compatible apps, make frequently used functions easier to reach, and limit unnecessary alerts.
- Band: A physical change that can make the same watch look sporty, casual, or formal.
- Display behavior: Brightness, screen timeout, wake gestures, and always-on display affect appearance, convenience, and battery use.
Galaxy Wearable is the main companion app for pairing and managing supported watches. Menu names and availability can vary by watch, software, phone, and region. Samsung’s Galaxy Wearable guide covers the app’s role.

Change the watch face from your phone
For a Wear OS Galaxy Watch, start with the paired Android phone:

- Open Galaxy Wearable.
- Tap Watch faces.
- Browse the available faces and tap one to apply it.
- If the face offers it, tap Customize.
- Choose from the controls provided—these may include color, background, clock style, layout, or complication slots.
- Tap Save or the on-screen apply control, if shown.
Not every face offers a Customize button. Some faces must first be installed on the watch, and some simply do not support editing. If you cannot find the option, try a different face or follow the face developer’s instructions. Samsung’s face-customization guide also notes that app controls can depend on what is installed on the watch.
Customize a face on the watch
- On the current watch face, touch and hold the screen.
- Swipe through installed faces and select the one you want.
- Tap Customize if it appears.
- Swipe between the available editing categories, then change the options shown.
- For a complication, tap its slot and choose from the data sources or apps offered.
- Press the Home/Power key to return to the face.
Depending on the model or software, the control may instead be called Change style or Change watch face. Follow the option presented on your watch; a missing control does not necessarily mean the watch is malfunctioning. For model-specific routes, see Samsung’s watch-face instructions.
Build a face for the way you use your watch
A good face is readable at a glance and shows only information you actually use. These are style ideas, not fixed Samsung presets:

- Everyday minimal: Choose a simple digital or analog face, a neutral background, and high-contrast time. Add the date, battery, or one frequently used shortcut; leave spare slots empty.
- Office or formal: Try an understated analog or hybrid face with restrained colors. Use a calendar or next-appointment complication, and pair it with a neutral fabric, hybrid, or leather-look band.
- Fitness: Use a high-contrast digital face with a workout shortcut and only the activity information you check regularly. A sport band is practical for sweat and cleaning. Put workout and health tiles near the start of your tile sequence.
- Travel or outdoors: Favor large, legible numerals and consider weather, a timer, or compass where supported. Altitude or barometer options depend on the watch and installed software. Do not assume every health or navigation data source is available in every region or with every phone.
- Evening or sleep: Keep the layout uncluttered and reduce brightness or screen wake behavior if that suits your routine. Display settings and their effects vary by model; always-on display and bright or animated faces can use more battery.
It can be easier to keep a small rotation—such as everyday, workout, and formal—than to repeatedly rebuild one face. Digital layouts tend to make time and data quick to read; analog faces often look more traditional. A hybrid face can do both, but too many fields can make it busy.
Use complications without clutter
A complication is a small face element that displays information or opens an app. While editing a supported face, tap the slot you want to change and select one of the available options. The list is not universal: it depends on the face, installed apps, software, permissions, sensors, and sometimes region or phone compatibility.
If a health complication is missing or blank, check that the relevant app is installed and set up and that it has the permissions it needs. Some readings require supported hardware or regional availability. Health features should not be treated as medical diagnoses.

Use the face for what you need in one glance. Put information that needs more room on a tile instead. Filling every slot can make the time harder to read and the design less coherent.
Add and organize tiles or widgets
On a Wear OS Galaxy Watch, tiles are generally reached by swiping left from the main face. To manage them on the watch:
- Swipe left through your existing tiles to the end.
- Tap Add tiles or Add widget, if shown, then choose an available tile.
- To reorder, touch and hold a tile and drag it to the position you want.
- To remove one, touch and hold it and tap the red minus icon if that control appears.
You can also use the phone: open Galaxy Wearable, tap Widgets or Tiles, add from the available list, then touch and hold items in the top row to reorder them and tap Save. Samsung documents a capacity of up to 15 tiles on newer watches, but that is a model-dependent ceiling, not a guarantee for every device or software version. See Samsung’s tiles and widgets guidance.

Manage apps and find more watch faces
On Wear OS models, compatible apps can be installed through the Play Store on the watch. Galaxy Wearable is where you manage many watch settings and connected features; available app-management controls are described in Samsung’s watch app guide. Use app shortcuts in supported face slots when you want a function one tap away. Keeping only useful apps and limiting notifications can make the watch easier to navigate.
To find more faces, look under Watch faces in Galaxy Wearable for a store or “get more” option. On supported watches, you may also touch and hold the face, swipe to Add watch face or More watch faces, and open the Play Store. Store labels and routes vary; Samsung specifically documents direct downloading for the Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, and Watch6. Check a listing for model and software compatibility, whether it is free or paid, and whether it requires a separate app. For third-party faces, check the developer and requested permissions rather than assuming every listing is suitable for every watch.

A band can change the watch’s look more dramatically than a new face. Before buying, confirm the attachment and band size for your specific watch and case: a band advertised for one Galaxy Watch size or generation should not be assumed to fit all the others. Also consider wrist size, clasp comfort, whether you will wear it while sleeping, and how easy the material is to clean.

- Sport or silicone-style: A practical choice for workouts and sweat; check cleaning guidance and fit.
- Fabric: Often a lightweight casual option; fit and drying time depend on the material.
- Hybrid or leather-look: Suits a more polished office or evening style; check the product’s care instructions and whether it is appropriate for exercise.
- Metal-style: A dressier appearance, with clasp comfort and fit especially worth checking.
Samsung’s Watch8 and Watch8 Classic hybrid band listing and sport band listing illustrate options for those models; they are not proof of compatibility with older watches. Prices and availability change, so check the listing for your region and exact model.
If a customization option is missing or not working
- No Customize button: Try another face, confirm the face is installed on the watch, and check whether it uses a separate editing process. Labels can differ across Wear OS and Tizen.
- A complication is unavailable: The face may not support that slot or data source. Check app installation, permissions, watch support, and any required health-app setup.
- Tiles are missing: Swipe left from the face, look for Widgets on older software, and check whether the relevant app or feature must be installed first.
- Phone changes do not appear: Confirm Galaxy Wearable is connected to the correct watch, allow syncing to finish, and check Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. If the change still does not arrive, check watch storage, any required companion app, and software updates; restarting the phone and watch is a reasonable next step.
- You have an older Galaxy Watch: Do not assume Wear OS steps or store options apply. Galaxy Watch, Watch Active, Watch Active2, and Watch3 generations generally use Tizen, whose menus and face tools differ. Use the instructions for your exact model; some older guides use Stylize rather than Customize.
Samsung’s Wear OS setup guidance is centered on compatible Android phones. If you use an iPhone or a non-Samsung Android phone, check the compatibility for both your exact watch and phone before relying on a particular setup or feature path.

When a new face or band is enough
If your watch works as you need but its appearance feels dated, start with a different built-in face or a compatible band. If you want information to be easier to reach, try complications and tile order before buying anything. A replacement watch is worth considering only when you need hardware, software, or compatibility your current model cannot provide—not just a new color or look.
