Fratello’s video puts the silver, full-metal Casio G-Shock GM-B2100D-1A through water, freezing, a drop while encased in ice, and fire. The watch remains a functioning object in the filmed sequence, making for a compelling demonstration of toughness. But this is an editorial stunt, not a standardized durability test: it cannot establish that every example will survive the same treatment, or that this watch is indestructible.
What Fratello’s video tests
Published on November 10, 2023, the Fratello Watches feature by Lex Stolk centers on the Casio G-Shock GM-B2100D-1A. Its “four elements” concept follows an earlier Fratello test of the yellow resin GA-B2100C-9A. The sequence is designed to dramatize G-Shock toughness, not to reproduce a laboratory certification protocol.

The four-element test, in order
Water
The watch is put in water before the cold test. Casio specifies 20-bar water resistance for the GM-B2100 line, commonly described as a 200-meter rating. That makes ordinary immersion consistent with the stated specification, assuming the watch is in good condition and its seals are sound. A water-resistance rating is not a promise that any watch will withstand every aquatic circumstance, nor does it establish the condition of a watch after later impact or heat.

Freezing
Fratello leaves the watch in a freezer for a couple of days. This moves the challenge beyond ordinary immersion: freezing and thawing can place stress on materials and seals, and ice can complicate the impact that follows. The feature does not publish a controlled temperature profile or establish an official minimum operating temperature for the model.

Air and earth: a drop from the ice
The frozen watch is dropped from a considerable height and has to be freed from the ice through impact. This is a combined freezing-and-impact experiment. The written feature does not specify a standardized drop height, orientation, number of impacts, or laboratory procedure, so the result cannot be compared directly with a formal drop-test rating.
Fire
Fire is introduced later in the video, which shows how the watch fares and lets viewers inspect its appearance afterward. The feature does not provide a measured temperature, exposure time, distance, or internal-temperature reading. The fair conclusion is that the watch survived the fire exposure shown—not that it is fireproof or has a published heat-resistance rating.
After the abuse
The feature also checks practical functions and presentation, including whether the world-time display remains readable and whether the double-LED Super Illuminator works. Those checks make the sequence more informative than a simple visual stunt, but they are not a long-term reliability assessment or a post-impact water-pressure test.

What the GM-B2100D-1A is
The GM-B2100D-1A is the silver stainless-steel version of Casio’s full-metal 2100 series, often called the “CasiOak” because of its octagonal bezel and the shape’s resemblance to familiar luxury-watch designs. The 2100 line draws on the design language of the original 1983 G-Shock. The full-metal GM-B2100 line arrived in 2022.
It is an analog-digital watch, not a mechanical watch: hands share the dial with a digital display and functions. Stainless steel forms the case, bezel, case back and bracelet, giving it a more refined, jewelry-like appearance than a resin GA-2100. “Full metal” describes the exterior and bracelet, however—not every component inside the watch. Casio identifies fine resin buffering components within the shock-resistant construction.
How Casio builds in shock resistance
Casio describes resin buffers between the stainless-steel bezel and case, a shock-resistant structure around the module, and a three-pronged lug arrangement intended to disperse impact at the band connection. The watch also has a screw-back case. Its metal parts use forged, cut and polished construction, with brushed, mirror-polished and other surface treatments contributing to the finish.

That combination matters: the steel gives the watch its substantial appearance, while the resin components help absorb shock. Structural toughness and cosmetic toughness are different things. A watch may keep working after impact and still acquire scratches or marks on polished or coated surfaces.

Casio’s US page lists world time for 38 cities, while its app description refers to about 300 cities. Those figures describe different contexts: the watch’s stated city list and the app’s broader selectable-city coverage. Casio Malaysia’s launch material gives approximate charge-life figures of seven months without light after a full charge, or 18 months in darkness with power saving enabled. Actual performance depends on use and light exposure.
What Bluetooth adds
Casio lists automatic time adjustment four times a day, easier watch setting, world-time configuration, Time & Place logging, up to five reminders and a phone finder. Time & Place can record a date, time and location on a map. These features are convenient for setup and travel, but the watch is not simply a phone accessory: the listed functions do not imply that permanent Bluetooth pairing is required for ordinary use.

What the video proves—and what it does not
It shows that this particular test specimen continued to function after the sequence filmed by Fratello. That is meaningful as an editorial demonstration: water exposure did not immediately stop it, and the video subjects it to severe cold, impact and fire before checking its appearance and functions.
It does not show that every GM-B2100D-1A will survive identical treatment, that the watch passed a standardized fire, freeze or drop test, or that its seals remain sound for the long term. The feature does not document a pressure test after the abuse. Nor does it establish resistance to every kind of heat, chemical, salt water or mechanical shock. Do not recreate the stunt on a watch you own.
If a watch has taken a hard impact, treat its water resistance as uncertain until it has been checked appropriately. Casio’s 20-bar specification describes the model’s rating; it cannot confirm the present condition of an individual watch after damage, aging or service history.

What ownership is likely to feel like
At 165 grams, the GM-B2100D-1A is a substantial watch, especially compared with a resin 2100. That weight is part of the full-metal appeal, but it is also a trade-off: the watch may feel more noticeable on the wrist and less carefree during desk work or rough handling. Its polished and brushed steel surfaces add visual detail, but they are not scratch-proof. Bracelet fit matters too: buyers should expect a metal bracelet to need sizing for a secure, comfortable fit.
The octagonal design and analog-digital layout make it versatile in style, while the digital display carries the watch’s additional information and functions. Whether the hands and display feel easy to read is a matter of personal preference and viewing conditions; the video’s post-test checks are not a substitute for trying the dial on in person.
Who should buy it—and who should look elsewhere?
The GM-B2100D-1A makes sense for someone who wants the recognizable 2100 shape in stainless steel, with G-Shock shock-resistant construction, solar charging, Bluetooth setup convenience, and an analog-digital display. It can move from casual wear into smart-casual settings more easily than many resin G-Shocks, while retaining the distinctive octagonal design.
Choose another model if low weight, a less scratch-prone-feeling exterior, maximum legibility in demanding conditions, or a lower-cost, more casual ownership proposition matters more than metal finishing. The resin GA-2100 keeps the 2100 silhouette in a lighter, more forgiving format, but it is not a substitute for the GM-B2100D-1A’s steel bracelet and premium feel. The metal-covered GM-2100 is a potential middle ground; verify the exact reference and regional availability. Other GM-B2100 colorways, including black IP and rose-gold IP finishes, are primarily styling alternatives. For a square, heritage-inspired full-metal G-Shock with a traditional digital display, the GMW-B5000D is another direction to consider; compare exact regional features and pricing before deciding.
Fratello listed €550/US$550 in November 2023, and Casio Malaysia’s 2022 launch material listed RM2,645 for the silver model. Those are historical or regional references, not current pricing. Check Casio’s official GM-B2100 product page and regional retailer locator for current availability and local terms. Be sure to check the exact GM-B2100D-1A reference rather than a similarly named GMC-B2100 model.
Verdict
Fratello’s four-element video is a persuasive spectacle and a striking demonstration that one GM-B2100D-1A kept going through the filmed challenge. The stronger buying case is the watch itself: full-metal 2100 styling, a shock-resistant structure that still uses resin buffers, Tough Solar, Bluetooth convenience and an everyday analog-digital feature set. Buy it for that combination—not because an editorial stunt makes any watch indestructible.
