Volkswagen’s myVW app can put selected vehicle controls on your wrist, but the feature is best understood as remote access—not a verified digital car key. Apple Watch support was reported at launch on November 13, 2025; Volkswagen also refers to compatible smartwatches, but has not published a definitive list of supported Android watch models in the materials available here.
What Volkswagen’s watch app can do
The watch acts as a control interface for myVW’s connected services. The reported Apple Watch controls include locking and unlocking, honking and flashing the lights, and checking vehicle and lock status. The available controls depend on the vehicle and its connected-services eligibility.
Gas-powered Volkswagens
For eligible vehicles, the Apple Watch feature set includes remote engine start and stop and fuel-status information. Remote start requires compatible vehicle equipment; it is not available on every Volkswagen.

Eligible EVs can show charging status and offer charging controls and climate start or stop. Volkswagen says connected-service availability varies by vehicle and software version, so these functions should not be assumed for every electric model.

Volkswagen’s U.S. Remote Access page describes the underlying connected-service functions and their qualifications: Remote Access features and vehicle eligibility. Apple Watch launch functions were reported on November 13, 2025 by MacRumors.
Is it a real digital car key?
Not on the evidence Volkswagen has published for this smartwatch feature. A remote command sent through myVW is different from a credential that unlocks the car as you approach or starts it locally without an app command. The available descriptions do not establish passive proximity unlocking, NFC tap-to-unlock, UWB hands-free access, key sharing, or watch-based key operation without a phone.

For now, treat the watch as a convenient remote-control extension of myVW, not as a replacement for the physical key.
Apple Watch and Android watch compatibility
Apple Watch is the smartwatch platform specifically documented in launch coverage. Volkswagen Canada uses the broader phrase “compatible mobile devices and smartwatches,” but that wording does not identify which Wear OS models work. Android phone support does not, by itself, prove Android smartwatch support.

Before buying a watch for Volkswagen controls, check the current myVW listing in the app store for your country and confirm support for your exact watch model and regional app version. Which Volkswagens are eligible?
There is no single model list that guarantees every watch control. Eligibility can depend on country, model year, trim, installed equipment, software, and the connected-services plan. Volkswagen Canada says its app covers EVs from model year 2021 onward and gasoline vehicles from model year 2022 onward, while warning that some vehicles may not qualify.

- Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, Tiguan, Jetta, and Jetta GLI: U.S. model years 2020–2026 appear in the table; remote start is conditional on the vehicle being equipped for it.
- Arteon: U.S. model years 2020–2023 appear; remote start is conditional on equipment.
- Passat: U.S. model years 2020–2022 appear; remote start is unavailable because of vehicle capability.
- Taos: U.S. model years 2022–2025 appear; remote start is conditional on equipment.
- Golf, Golf GTI, and Golf R: the table lists remote start as unavailable for the model years covered because of vehicle capability.
- ID.4: the U.S. table covers model years 2021–2025; remote door lock and unlock are limited to vehicles with software 5.0, and several other remote functions are unavailable.
- ID. Buzz: the 2025 U.S. entry lists remote honk and flash as unavailable.
Use Volkswagen’s U.S. Remote Access eligibility table or the relevant Volkswagen site for your country. Check the VIN, model year, trim and equipment, software version, and plan rather than relying on a model name alone.

Plan requirements, regional pricing, and setup
Watch controls depend on myVW and an eligible connected-services plan. Volkswagen’s Apple Watch launch coverage says owners need the app, accepted terms, a vehicle in the virtual garage, and an included or paid Remote Access or VW Vehicle Insights plan. In the United States, Volkswagen says connected services may require an included or paid subscription; check the terms attached to the individual vehicle.
For Canada, Volkswagen listed Remote Access at CAD $9.99 per month or CAD $99 per year on its page when checked August 18, 2026. That is Canadian pricing, not a verified U.S. rate. Canadian included-service periods also vary by vehicle: the page lists eight years for EVs from model year 2021 or newer and for gas vehicles from most model years 2022 or newer, while other listed plans have four-year or three-year inclusion periods depending on model year and plan. Confirm the terms for your vehicle and market on Volkswagen Canada’s myVW page.
Set up the vehicle in myVW
- Download the myVW app for your market and create an account or sign in.
- Add the vehicle using its VIN and follow the in-app instructions to connect it through the infotainment system.
- Accept the myVW terms and activate any included or paid connected-services plan required for the functions you want.
- Install or enable the smartwatch component only if the regional app and your watch support it. The exact watch-pairing menu path is not established in Volkswagen’s available setup instructions, so do not rely on a presumed “digital key” or “pair watch” menu.
- Confirm the vehicle and controls appear on the watch, then test a low-risk function such as vehicle status or lock status.
Volkswagen’s U.S. app requirements are listed on its myVW app information page. The listed phone operating-system requirements—iOS 13.4 or later and Android 9 or later—apply to the phone app, not proof of compatibility for a particular smartwatch.

That behavior is not established for every watch and app version. A cellular Apple Watch may have a connection of its own, while a Bluetooth-connected watch may rely on its paired phone; neither fact proves that myVW’s watch component can issue commands independently. The vehicle also needs to be reachable through Volkswagen’s connected-services system. Volkswagen says the smartphone app keeps the vehicle connected while it is within a cellular-service area, so a dead zone or offline vehicle can prevent or delay remote commands.

What to check when a watch command fails
- Confirm you have the Volkswagen app intended for your country and that both the phone app and watch software are up to date.
- Check that your exact watch is supported by the regional app; broad “compatible smartwatch” wording is not a Wear OS model list.
- Verify that the vehicle is enrolled in myVW and appears in the virtual garage, and check whether its connected-services trial or paid plan is active.
- Check the phone or watch internet connection and whether the vehicle has cellular coverage.
- For remote start, confirm the vehicle is equipped for it and is in a safe condition that permits starting.
- Try the same function in the phone app. If it fails there too, the cause is more likely vehicle eligibility, account, plan, or connectivity than the watch alone.
- If the phone app works but the watch does not, sign out and back in, restart both devices, and remove and reinstall the watch app or complication if available.
- Contact Volkswagen support or a dealer if the vehicle is missing from the account, an active plan lacks expected functions, or the vehicle may need a software update.
