On watchOS 10, the settings most worth reviewing are the ones that interrupt you, wake the screen unexpectedly, or put apps in front of the watch face without asking. You do not need to turn off all eight: change only what solves a problem, and keep health and emergency features you rely on.

This guide is specifically for watchOS 10. Some settings existed before it, and menu names or locations can differ in later watchOS releases. You can change many settings on the watch or in the iPhone Watch app; some controls are available only in one place. Apple’s settings guide explains the general distinction.

Choose settings by the problem you want to fix

Start with the annoyance you actually notice rather than switching off every feature. This quick guide separates quieter notifications from battery, privacy, and display changes.

Problem First setting to review Main trade-off
Too many wrist taps App notifications You may miss useful or time-sensitive alerts.
The watch face keeps giving way to an app Live Activity auto-launch and Return to Clock Media or activity information may take an extra step to open.
Battery life is shorter than you want Always On, Background App Refresh, and frequently updating complications Less glanceable or less current information.
The screen wakes accidentally Wake on Wrist Raise and Wake on Crown Rotation You will need to tap or use the Digital Crown to wake it.
Information is visible when your wrist is down Always-On content controls Some complications, notifications, or apps will be hidden.
Motivational or environmental alerts are noisy Activity, Mindfulness, Noise, or other app notifications You lose those reminders or prompts.
You are concerned about losing safety coverage Do not disable Fall Detection or health alerts casually Changing them can affect emergency response or health awareness.

1. Trim notifications app by app

Notifications are often the fastest route to a calmer watch, but a blanket shutdown can hide the alerts you actually need. Watch notifications can include messages, invitations, Activity and Noise alerts, and other app notifications, as Apple’s notification guide describes.

  1. On the iPhone, open the Watch app.
  2. Tap My Watch → Notifications.
  3. Review the apps and choose the least intrusive available option; turn off alerts for apps that do not need to reach your wrist.

Keep calls, messages, calendar events, authentication alerts, navigation, and health notifications that matter to you. Apple apps may offer category-specific controls; third-party apps commonly mirror their iPhone notification behavior. If the alerts are useful but you dislike the red dot, on the watch use Settings → Notifications → Notifications Indicator and turn it off instead of disabling notifications.

Leave on: alerts you rely on for time-sensitive communication or personal safety. To undo a change, return to the same app’s notification controls and restore its prior setting.

2. Turn off Always On—or hide selected content

Always On keeps the time and watch face visible while your wrist is down on supported models. Turning it off can reduce power use and limit what is visible at a glance, but you will need to raise or tap the watch to see the display. Apple says Always On is unavailable on Apple Watch SE models and when Low Power Mode is active. See Apple’s Always On guidance for supported behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On the watch, go to Settings → Display & Brightness → Always On and turn off Always On. If you prefer a visible clock, keep Always On enabled and adjust its content controls instead: Show Complication Data, Show Notifications, Show Apps, and, where available, Show Live Activities. That can reduce exposure of private information without removing the clock. Apple notes that visible content may be seen by people nearby; its Always-On design guidance discusses the feature’s privacy considerations.

Consider turning it off: if you prioritize battery or do not want a visible display. Consider content controls instead: if privacy or wrist-down clutter is the issue. Restore Always On from the same menu.

3. Stop Live Activities and media controls from launching automatically

Live Activities can remain available without automatically taking over the watch display. Distinguish between allowing an activity to exist, showing it while your wrist is down, and having it launch automatically. If media controls or another activity keeps replacing the watch face, disable automatic launch rather than disabling access to Live Activities entirely.

On watchOS 10, check the iPhone Watch app under My Watch → Smart Stack or the relevant General / Auto-Launch / Live Activities controls, depending on the label shown. For media, review the Media Apps auto-launch setting. On the watch, look under Settings → Smart Stack where available. If the only problem is wrist-down visibility, use Always On → Show Live Activities rather than turning off all Live Activities. Apple documents the wrist-down control in its Always On instructions; automatic media takeover has also been reported as an annoyance by users, including in this TechRadar account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What changes: the activity or media view may no longer open by itself, but you can still access it manually from the Smart Stack. If you miss quick media controls, restore automatic launch for media apps or open the Live Activity manually.

4. Limit Background App Refresh for apps that do not need it

Background App Refresh lets apps check for updates and new content. Turning it off can save power, but it is not a master switch for every kind of background activity. Notifications, workout GPS, health measurements, Live Activities, and some complication updates are separate behaviors. Apple specifically notes that complications on the current watch face may continue refreshing even when Background App Refresh is off. See Apple’s battery guidance.

On the watch, go to Settings → General → Background App Refresh. Turn it off globally or, preferably, disable it only for apps that do not need timely updates—such as rarely used shopping, social, news, or delivery apps. Keep it for apps whose complications or current data matter to you.

Trade-off: some app information may be less current until you open the app. There is no guaranteed battery-life gain; the result depends on the apps, complications, connectivity, and how you use the watch. Re-enable an app’s refresh from the same list if its data becomes too stale.

5. Disable Wake on Wrist Raise if the display activates by mistake

Wake on Wrist Raise is convenient for quick glances, but ordinary arm movement can sometimes wake the display when you would rather it stayed dark. On the watch, open Settings → Display & Brightness → Wake on Wrist Raise and turn it off. The display can still be woken by tapping it or using the Digital Crown.

  • GREAT BATTERY LIFE AND FASTER CHARGING—Enjoy a smartwatch with all-day, 18-hour battery life* from sunup to sundown. Then charge up to twice as fast as SE 2* and get up to 8 hours of battery in just 15 minutes.*

If you only want to suppress wrist activation temporarily—for example, in a dark venue—Theater Mode is an alternative. It prevents the display from turning on when you raise your wrist, enables Silent Mode, and retains haptic notifications. Apple’s guide to silencing Apple Watch explains the mode. Restore wrist raising from the same Display & Brightness setting when you want hands-free glances again.

6. Disable Wake on Crown Rotation if the crown wakes the screen

Wake on Crown Rotation is separate from Wake on Wrist Raise. If a sleeve, wrist position, or movement turns the Digital Crown and wakes the display, you can turn off that specific behavior rather than changing how the wrist wakes the screen.

On the watch, go to Settings → Display & Brightness → Wake on Crown Rotation and turn it off. You can still wake the display another way. Apple documents both wake controls in its wake and display guide. These controls primarily make display behavior more predictable; do not count on them as a guaranteed battery fix.

7. Set Return to Clock for apps that linger

If an app remains on screen after you stop using it, choose how quickly the watch should return to its face. On the watch, open Settings → General → Return to Clock. Available choices include Always, After 2 minutes, and After 1 hour, with custom options for supported apps. Apple’s wake and Return to Clock guide lists examples such as Music, Now Playing, Podcasts, Stopwatch, Timers, Voice Memos, Maps, Mindfulness, and Workout.

Choose Always for an app that often seems to take over the display, or After 2 minutes if you want a short window to resume an app. App-specific settings are a better first move than applying the strictest option to everything.

An active workout, route, timer, or media session may remain visible for a separate reason. If an activity still appears unexpectedly, review Live Activity auto-launch as well. Change the Return to Clock setting back at the same path if you find yourself reopening an app too often.

8. Turn off reminders you do not use, but protect health and safety alerts

Stand reminders, Activity goal and coaching notifications, Mindfulness reminders, Noise notifications, handwashing reminders, and unused app prompts are reasonable candidates for cleanup. Start in the iPhone Watch app at My Watch → Notifications, then look in the relevant app or health settings: these alerts do not all share one universal switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat emergency and medical alerts as ordinary distractions. Avoid disabling Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Emergency SOS, irregular-rhythm notifications, high- or low-heart-rate notifications, medication reminders, or other alerts configured for your health needs just to quiet the watch. Apple says Fall Detection can contact emergency services and notify emergency contacts after detecting a hard fall, though it cannot detect every fall. Apple also warns that turning off Wrist Detection prevents the watch from automatically attempting to call emergency services after a detected hard-impact fall. Read Apple’s Fall Detection guidance before changing related safety settings.

What to do if battery life is the real problem

No single setting accounts for every battery complaint. Make changes in a way that helps identify what matters for your watch rather than assuming one switch will solve it.

  1. Check battery usage and charging behavior.
  2. Disable Background App Refresh for unnecessary apps.
  3. Reduce notifications that do not need to reach your wrist.
  4. Consider turning off Always On if your model supports it.
  5. Review complications that need frequent updates.
  6. Use Low Power Mode when its limitations are acceptable.
  7. If the change began immediately after installing watchOS 10, restart and update the watch before making more adjustments.

Low Power Mode is not a neutral substitute for individual changes: Apple says it can turn off Always On, reduce background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements and some heart-rate notifications, delay notifications, and limit some cellular or Wi-Fi behavior. Check Apple’s battery-life guidance before relying on it.

When a setting does not seem to work

  • Notifications still arrive: check the Watch app’s app-by-app notification settings. Background App Refresh does not control notification delivery.
  • Media still appears: check automatic launch separately from wrist-down visibility. Hiding Live Activities while the wrist is down does not necessarily stop auto-launch.
  • The battery still drains: inspect complications, connectivity, and actual usage; the settings above do not guarantee a specific improvement.
  • The display still wakes: turning off Wrist Raise does not prevent every wake method. Tap or crown behavior is separate.
  • Complications still update: Apple notes that current-face complications may refresh despite Background App Refresh being off.
  • Menu names differ: these paths are for watchOS 10; labels and locations can vary by release, model, region, and language.

Make a few changes, then reassess

Choose two or three settings tied to a real annoyance, use the watch normally for a day or two, and only then decide whether to change more. That approach keeps useful conveniences intact and makes it easier to spot which adjustment actually improved your experience.
