Apple released watchOS 11.2 on December 11, 2024, adding two user-facing features: the ability to pause iPhone video from the Camera Remote app and expanded Tides map support for coastal locations in China. It was a small point release, not a major watchOS redesign—and “now available” is historical wording by September 2026, because later watchOS updates have since replaced it.
What watchOS 11.2 added
Apple’s watchOS 11.2 release notes identify two notable additions. The update also included security fixes and underlying improvements, so it was more than a cosmetic feature update.
1. Camera Remote can pause iPhone video
The Camera Remote app on Apple Watch can pause a video recording being made on the paired iPhone. You can then resume recording without walking back to the phone or touching its screen.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This is useful for tripod shots, group videos, demonstrations, and other recordings where touching the iPhone could disturb the framing. The Apple Watch remains a remote control: it does not record video independently, and the feature should not be interpreted as universal control for every iPhone camera mode or third-party camera app.

It depends on the normal Camera Remote connection between the watch and paired iPhone. A locked or out-of-range iPhone, an unavailable camera session, another active camera function, or use of a third-party camera app can prevent the control from working as expected.
2. Tides maps expanded to China
watchOS 11.2 expanded the Tides app’s map support for tidal conditions and coastal locations in China. This was a regional expansion—not the introduction of the Tides app itself.
Apple introduced Tides with watchOS 11, including information such as high and low tides, rising and falling tides, tide height and direction, beach maps, and complications. Apple says the broader Tides experience covers more than 115,000 beaches and 5,000 surf spots worldwide, but that figure describes the watchOS 11 feature set rather than the specific incremental change in 11.2.

Release date and current status
watchOS 11.2 was released on December 11, 2024. At launch, it was the second major update to the watchOS 11 generation, following watchOS 11.1.
Apple subsequently released later watchOS 11 updates, including watchOS 11.6.2, and later watchOS generations are now documented by Apple. If you are reading this in 2026, do not look for watchOS 11.2 as the latest update or downgrade to it. Install the newest watchOS version compatible with your Apple Watch instead.
Apple Watch compatibility
Apple’s watchOS 11.2 security documentation lists support beginning with Apple Watch Series 6. Contemporary compatibility reporting also included:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Apple Watch Series 6 and later
- Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)
- All Apple Watch Ultra models
Compatibility with watchOS 11.2 does not mean every watchOS 11 feature works identically on every supported model. Individual health, gesture, sensor, and other capabilities can have narrower hardware requirements. A Series 6 owner, for example, should not assume that support for the operating-system update guarantees access to every feature introduced across the entire watchOS 11 generation.

How watchOS 11.2 was installed
For the December 2024 release, Apple Watch owners installed the update through the paired iPhone:
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Select watchOS 11.2 and follow the onscreen instructions.
- Place the Apple Watch on its charger during installation.
Launch-era guidance required the paired iPhone to run iOS 18.2, and the watch needed at least 50% battery while connected to its charger. Keep the iPhone nearby and connected to Wi-Fi during the download and installation.
If the update did not appear
- Confirm that both the iPhone and Apple Watch are compatible.
- Update the paired iPhone to the required iOS version.
- Put the watch on its charger and charge it beyond the minimum battery requirement.
- Keep the watch and iPhone within normal Bluetooth or Wi-Fi range.
- Restart both devices if the update remains unavailable.
- Free storage if downloading or installation fails.
Do not remove the watch from the iPhone or interrupt an installation unless Apple’s troubleshooting guidance specifically requires it.
Security fixes
The visible changes were modest, but Apple also published security fixes for Apple Watch Series 6 and later. The security page describes fixes affecting areas including app access, sensitive data, WebKit, the kernel, and other system components. That makes the update relevant even to owners who had no interest in pausing iPhone video or using Tides maps in China.

Should you install watchOS 11.2?
At the time of release, updating was generally sensible for compatible owners because it added a practical Camera Remote control and included security improvements. The video-pause feature was most useful for people who regularly filmed with an iPhone mounted on a tripod. The Tides expansion was mainly relevant to users in China or people who regularly used coastal locations there.
The buying decision is different: neither feature alone justifies purchasing a new Apple Watch. Existing Series 6-or-newer owners generally had no hardware requirement for watchOS 11.2. Anyone already running a later compatible watchOS version should stay on that newer release rather than seek out 11.2.
If you are considering new hardware for broader reasons—newer sensors, a longer support horizon, a larger display, or premium outdoor features—check Apple’s current Apple Watch lineup. Model availability, prices, cellular charges, trade-in values, and financing change over time.
The bottom line on watchOS 11.2
watchOS 11.2 was a genuine standalone update released on December 11, 2024. Its two documented user-facing additions were remote pausing of iPhone video through Camera Remote and expanded Tides map support for coastal locations in China. It was a useful, security-relevant point release, but not a major redesign—and it is no longer the current watchOS update in 2026.
