watchOS 11.4 added a “Break Through Silent Mode” option for Apple Watch alarms. It lets a supported alarm play through the watch speaker while Silent Mode remains enabled—but it is not a universal override for every alarm or notification. Apple introduced the feature for the Sleep Wake Up alarm, and its current guide also documents the control within alarm-edit options.
watchOS 11.4 was released on April 1, 2025. It supports Apple Watch Series 6 and later, although Apple has since released newer watchOS 11 updates and watchOS 26 for compatible models.
What changed in watchOS 11.4?
Normally, Apple Watch Silent Mode suppresses audible alerts and leaves haptic feedback on your wrist. That is useful overnight, but it can be a problem if a vibration-only alarm is not reliable enough to wake you.

When enabled, the selected alarm can play sound through the Apple Watch speaker even while Silent Mode is on. Apple’s release notes specifically describe the change for the Sleep Wake Up alarm, the alarm associated with a sleep schedule.

This means you can keep ordinary notifications quiet while allowing a chosen wake-up alarm to make sound. It does not turn Silent Mode off globally and does not make every alert audible.
Apple’s watchOS 11 update notes describe the original feature, while Apple’s Apple Watch user guide documents the alarm control and its effect.
How to enable sound for an Apple Watch alarm
For an alarm shown in the Apple Watch Alarms app:
- Open Alarms on your Apple Watch.
- Tap the alarm you want to change.
- Scroll through the alarm’s edit options.
- Turn on Break Through Silent Mode.
- Leave Silent Mode enabled if you want other watch alerts to remain quiet.
For a Sleep Wake Up alarm, the control may appear with the sleep-schedule alarm rather than as a general sound setting. Menu placement and labels can vary between watchOS versions, so look within the alarm’s own editing screen.

Test the alarm before relying on it overnight. Set a test alarm a few minutes ahead, enable Silent Mode, and confirm that the watch produces sound as expected.
Does it work for every Apple Watch alarm?
Do not treat this as a universal Silent Mode exception. Apple’s release wording singles out the Sleep Wake Up alarm, while its current guide shows Break Through Silent Mode as an option in alarm editing. The exact behavior can depend on the alarm type and watchOS version.
| Alarm source | What to expect | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Sleep Wake Up alarm | Apple introduced the feature specifically for this alarm type. | Sleep schedule or the alarm’s edit screen |
| Manual Apple Watch alarm | Apple’s current guide documents the control in alarm-edit options, but availability may vary. | Alarms app, then tap the alarm |
| iPhone Clock alarm | Uses the iPhone’s separate alarm rules. | Clock app on iPhone |
| Third-party alarm | Depends on the app, its permissions, and how it delivers alerts. | The app’s own settings |
The safest approach is to edit the specific alarm that will wake you rather than assuming a setting applies to all alarms.

Apple Watch alarms versus iPhone alarms
The watchOS feature concerns sound from the Apple Watch. It should not be confused with the iPhone’s alarm behavior.
Apple says that iPhone alarms are not affected by Silent Mode, Do Not Disturb, or the Ring/Silent switch. Their sound is controlled separately through the iPhone’s alarm and volume settings. See Apple’s iPhone alarm support page for the relevant behavior and troubleshooting guidance.
If you use a sleep alarm, a manually created watch alarm, or an iPhone alarm, first identify which device is actually generating the wake-up alert. The settings on one device do not automatically describe the behavior of the other.

Compatible Apple Watch models
Apple lists watchOS 11.4 compatibility for Apple Watch Series 6 and later. Older models cannot receive watchOS 11.4 and therefore cannot gain this feature through that update. Apple’s compatibility and security-release information is available at Apple’s security releases page.
watchOS 11.4 is no longer the newest release in the watchOS 11 branch: Apple lists watchOS 11.6.2 as a later update. Apple’s current release information also lists watchOS 26 for compatible models. If your watch supports a newer version, install the latest compatible watchOS rather than deliberately stopping at 11.4. The control may be located or labeled slightly differently in later software.
If the alarm still only vibrates
The Break Through Silent Mode option is missing
- Check that the watch is running watchOS 11.4 or later.
- Open the alarm itself in the Alarms app; do not look only in Settings > Sounds & Haptics.
- Confirm that you are editing the correct alarm. A Sleep Wake Up alarm can be separate from an ordinary alarm.
- Check whether your watch model is Series 6 or later.
- Update to the newest compatible watchOS and check again.
The option is enabled but there is no sound
- Confirm the control is enabled on the alarm that actually runs.
- Check the watch’s volume and verify that the speaker works with another sound.
- Test the alarm while wearing the watch. Apple’s guide describes the option as making sound play while wearing Apple Watch.
- Make sure the alarm is being delivered by the watch, not solely by an iPhone or third-party app.
- If the control remains unavailable or behaves unexpectedly, recreate the alarm and test it before using it as your primary wake-up method.
Apple does not promise that the speaker will be loud enough for every sleeper. Volume, the watch model, the room, how the watch is worn, and individual hearing all affect whether the alarm is noticeable.

What if the watch is charging overnight?
Charging can introduce a separate Nightstand mode. Apple documents distinct Nightstand behavior and notes that an alarm set in the Alarms app can use a different sound in that mode. That documentation should not be taken as proof that every Sleep Wake Up alarm behaves identically while the watch is charging.
If you charge the watch overnight, test the exact setup—including the charger, Nightstand mode, Silent Mode, and the alarm type—before depending on it.
Who should use this feature?
Break Through Silent Mode is useful if you:
- Keep the watch in Silent Mode overnight but want an audible morning alarm.
- Find haptic-only alarms too easy to miss.
- Want the watch to provide the wake-up sound instead of an iPhone across the room.
- Need ordinary notifications muted without muting a selected alarm.
The trade-off is that the alarm may disturb a partner or anyone nearby, and it removes the privacy of a wrist-only haptic alarm. If you specifically want a silent wake-up, leave the option disabled.

The bottom line
watchOS 11.4 genuinely added sound for selected Apple Watch wake-up alarms during Silent Mode, but the headline needs a qualification. It is an alarm-specific control—introduced for the Sleep Wake Up alarm—not a global switch that makes every Apple Watch alert audible. Enable Break Through Silent Mode on the exact alarm you use, then test it before trusting it to wake you.
