Apple released watchOS 11 developer beta 3 on July 8, 2024, with its clearest reported user-facing changes focused on Activity Rings: users could pause them for a rest day and set different goals for different days of the week. It was a prerelease build for developers, not a stable update or a public beta available to everyone. This is a historical release report, not a notice that beta 3 is currently available.

What changed in watchOS 11 developer beta 3?

The most notable reported change was more control over Activity Rings. A contemporaneous report on beta 3 described options to pause rings and schedule different Activity goals for different days.

Pause rings for a rest day

Pausing rings gives users a way to take a planned day off without treating it as a missed daily goal that breaks an award streak. That can be useful during recovery from an injury or illness, on a rest day, or when travel disrupts a normal routine. It is distinct from closing the rings: closing still means meeting the day’s goals, while pausing changes how the day affects the streak. It is also not the same as turning off Activity tracking.

Set different goals for different days

Instead of relying on one target every day, users could set day-specific Activity goals. For example, someone might choose higher targets on training days and lighter ones on recovery days, or use separate targets for weekdays and weekends. That makes the rings more adaptable to a planned routine rather than asking users to follow the same daily target regardless of the day.

Beta 3 was also reported to add more ways to customize the Fitness app’s Summary tab, including choosing which fitness information and friends’ activity data to surface. This is a Fitness app customization, separate from the Apple Watch’s Activity Ring controls.

Features from watchOS 11 overall—not necessarily beta 3 additions

Not every prominent watchOS 11 feature was new in this particular build. Apple’s June 10, 2024 announcement had already described Vitals and Training Load as part of watchOS 11. Smart Stack improvements, Live Activities, and developer capabilities for Double Tap were also part of the wider watchOS 11 story. They should not be read as beta 3-exclusive changes simply because they appeared during the same beta cycle.

Vitals brings key health measurements together and can flag when multiple metrics fall outside a user’s typical range, with context that may include factors such as elevation change, alcohol, or illness. Training Load compares recent workout intensity and duration with a longer-term baseline; Apple described a seven-day period in relation to a 28-day baseline. These features can help users interpret trends, but they are not medical diagnoses and cannot determine whether someone is ill or medically overtrained.

Who could install the developer beta?

At launch, watchOS 11 developer beta access was intended for Apple Developer Program members. Apple’s broad compatibility guidance for watchOS 11 named Apple Watch Series 6 or later, paired with an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18. A compatible watch by itself was not enough: the paired iPhone also needed the appropriate software. Feature availability could vary by device, region, and language, and Apple cautioned that features were subject to change.

  1. On the iPhone, open Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates and select Developer Beta.
  2. Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone and go to My Watch > General > Software Update > Beta Updates.
  3. Select the desired developer beta and enter a passcode if prompted.
  4. Keep the iPhone on Wi-Fi and near the watch while the watch installs and restarts.

Apple’s prerequisites included at least 50% battery on the watch, the required iPhone beta, Wi-Fi on the iPhone, and the devices remaining near each other. Back up before installing and review the release notes. Apple’s watchOS 11 release notes are the place to check developer-facing API changes, resolved and known issues, and behavior notes. The page is cumulative across the beta cycle, however, so not every item on it should be attributed to beta 3.

Why most people should wait rather than install

A developer beta is for testing, not a promise of dependable daily use. Beta software can bring battery drain, heat or slow charging, unreliable workouts, sleep or heart-rate data, notification problems, pairing or sync trouble, and incompatibility with third-party apps. Those are general risks of prerelease software, not a claim that beta 3 necessarily had each problem.

WatchOS recovery is also less flexible than downgrading software on an iPhone or Mac: users generally cannot simply restore an Apple Watch to an earlier public version themselves. A person who depends on one watch for work, fitness, sleep tracking, reminders, navigation, or emergency functions has good reason to avoid a developer beta on that device. If the goal is simply to try prerelease features, waiting for Apple’s public-beta channel was the more appropriate option for non-developers; anyone who needs reliability should wait for a stable release.

What beta 3 meant for watch developers

The watchOS 11 SDK came with Xcode 16. Developers could use the beta cycle to check app behavior against watchOS 11 changes and test capabilities such as Smart Stack relevancy cues, interactive widgets, Live Activities behavior, and Double Tap APIs. Apple’s release notes—not a consumer-facing feature roundup—are the relevant reference for SDK changes, known issues, workarounds, and deprecations.

For fitness users, the practical appeal of beta 3 was straightforward: rest days and variable training schedules could fit Activity goals more naturally. For developers, testing mattered more than the small set of visible interface changes. For most other users, those refinements alone were not a strong reason to put a primary Apple Watch on prerelease software.
