watchOS 26.2 made two separate changes: Apple refined Sleep Score classifications, while reports said iPhones in the EU stopped automatically sharing some Wi‑Fi network information with paired Apple Watches. Neither change means the watch has lost Wi‑Fi, and Apple has not published a new Sleep Score formula or exact thresholds.
Released in December 2025, watchOS 26.2 is a historical update rather than the current 26.x release: Apple’s release index listed later versions, including watchOS 26.6, by August 2026. The details below explain what the 26.2 changes mean and what to check if you still see their effects.
What changed in watchOS 26.2?
Apple’s watchOS 26.2 release notes list Sleep app notification controls and refinements to sleep classifications. They also list Enhanced Safety Alerts, available in the United States, and a fix for an issue that could prevent Music playback from advancing.

Separately, 9to5Mac reported that Apple changed automatic iPhone-to-Watch Wi‑Fi credential sharing in the European Union, in connection with interoperability requirements under the Digital Markets Act. That regional Wi‑Fi change is not the same as removing Wi‑Fi from Apple Watch.

What Apple’s Sleep Score measures—and what it does not
Apple describes Sleep Score as a nightly summary based on three factors: sleep duration, bedtime consistency, and interruptions. You can see it in the Sleep app, Smart Stack, or a watch-face complication, and review sleep information over time in Health. Apple’s overview is available in its watchOS 26.2 feature notes.
It is a wellness summary, not a clinical measurement or diagnosis, and it is not a direct reading of how rested you feel. A single number can also conceal important context: a short night, an irregular schedule, or a disrupted recording may matter more to you than the overall classification suggests.
What does “refined” mean?
Confirmed by Apple: the release notes say sleep classifications were refined and describe notification controls for the Sleep app.

Reported by independent coverage: AppleInsider said the score ranges were adjusted to better correspond with how people might feel after a night’s rest. That reporting helps explain why some users may perceive the scoring as “sharper,” but it is not a published scoring specification. See AppleInsider’s report.
Not publicly specified: Apple has not disclosed a complete formula, the precise before-and-after score thresholds, or how much duration, consistency, and interruptions contribute. The release does not establish that the score is medically more accurate, that it now correlates with sleep-lab results, or that every watch model’s score changes in the same way. Apple’s separate sleep-stage methodology document does not reveal the complete Sleep Score formula.
Why might your score look different after an update?
A changed classification or score band could make a night appear different even if your sleep did not change. Updated software may also interpret or present existing sleep information differently; Apple has not detailed exactly how historical records are handled. And the watch may simply have recorded a different night: duration, interruptions, schedule, fit, charging, and missing data can all affect what the app has to summarize.

For reliable overnight tracking, Apple recommends wearing the watch comfortably and ensuring it has enough battery. A loose fit can register excess movement, and a depleted battery prevents tracking. See Apple’s sleep-tracking guidance.
- Compare several nights rather than treating one score as a verdict. Looking at a week or two is a practical way to distinguish a persistent pattern from a one-off reading—not an Apple-prescribed threshold.
- Check total sleep time, bedtime consistency, interruptions, and the recorded sleep timeline alongside the headline score. Review sleep-stage information as context, not as a substitute diagnosis.
- If a result looks implausible, confirm the watch was worn overnight, had battery, and recorded the expected sleep period. Compare the Health sleep timeline with the watch’s record.
- Irregular schedules, shift work, and frequent naps may be poorly represented by a single nightly summary. Apple’s sleep-stage research notes challenges involving nontraditional schedules and frequent nappers.
A score shift alone does not show that your health or your actual sleep changed. If you can reproduce a clear recording discrepancy after checking the basics, contact Apple Support or submit feedback rather than deleting health history or resetting the watch without a specific reason.
What changed about Wi‑Fi sharing in the EU?
Three things are easy to conflate:
- Wi‑Fi connectivity: Apple Watch can still connect to compatible Wi‑Fi when the paired iPhone is out of Bluetooth range, subject to the watch model and network.
- Credential synchronization: the reported EU change concerns whether network details known to the iPhone automatically become available to its paired watch.
- Joining a network: if the watch does not have the network information, you may need to set it up separately where the network and watch support that option.
For example, an EU user who joins a new home, hotel, or office network on an iPhone may find that the paired watch does not automatically inherit those credentials as it did before. The difference is most likely to matter when the watch is away from the iPhone and needs its own Wi‑Fi connection. Exact behavior can vary with the software combination, model, network, and whether the watch already knew that network; it is not safe to assume every user must re-enter every password.

Apple’s general Apple Watch Wi‑Fi guidance says the watch can use compatible 2.4GHz or 5GHz networks, subject to model limitations. It does not support public networks that require a web login page, subscription, or configuration profile. In the cited guidance, Apple Watch Series 5 and earlier and Apple Watch SE are listed as supporting 2.4GHz only; check the current model-specific guidance if band compatibility is the issue.
Who is most likely to notice the EU change?
- People who leave their iPhone behind: when Bluetooth is unavailable, the watch may need direct Wi‑Fi for connectivity.
- GPS-only watch owners: they do not have cellular service as an alternative connection.
- Cellular watch owners: cellular can provide a fallback when the model, plan, signal, and coverage support it; it does not guarantee service everywhere.
- Travelers and people using several networks: a newly encountered hotel or workplace network may be more noticeable than a familiar network already configured on the watch.
- Anyone on captive-portal Wi‑Fi: a login page or subscription requirement is unsupported regardless of the reported EU credential-sharing change.
If you are troubleshooting now, first check whether the watch connects when near the iPhone, then whether it can use a compatible network on its own. Confirm the network band and model support, and rule out a captive portal. The reported change concerns automatic sharing, not a blanket inability to connect. The available reporting describes the EU change, but does not establish that the purchase location alone determines which behavior a device will have.
Do you need a new watch or a sleep app?
No—not to address these changes. A different Sleep Score interpretation is software behavior; buying another watch is not a remedy for an undisclosed scoring formula. The reported EU change is also about credential sharing, not a hardware Wi‑Fi shutdown. Consider an upgrade only for a separate reason, such as compatibility, battery condition, or a need for cellular service.

A third-party sleep app may offer another way to organize or interpret your data, but another score is not automatically more clinically valid. Check its current features, cost, privacy terms, and Apple Health permissions before adopting it.
What to remember
watchOS 26.2 refined Apple’s sleep classifications, but Apple did not publish enough detail to quantify the scoring change or claim clinical improvement. A different score may reflect revised interpretation, a different recorded night, or both. In the EU, reporting described a change to automatic iPhone–Watch Wi‑Fi credential sharing—not the end of Apple Watch Wi‑Fi. For present-day troubleshooting, check the software versions on both devices and Apple’s current release notes and support guidance.
