Apple released watchOS 26 developer beta 5 on August 5, 2025—not as a current rollout in 2026. The update carried build 23R5328g, replacing 23R5317g, and primarily refined the Liquid Glass interface and other features introduced earlier in the watchOS 26 beta cycle. It was intended for developers and beta testers, not every Apple Watch owner.
As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s release-notes index has moved on to watchOS 27 beta 4 and watchOS 26.6 RC documentation. Treat the original “rolling out now” wording as historical.
What watchOS 26 beta 5 was
watchOS 26 developer beta 5 was the fifth developer test release of Apple’s watchOS 26 software. Apple distributed it on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, with build number 23R5328g. The previous developer build was 23R5317g. Contemporaneous reporting characterized the update as a refinement release rather than a major new feature drop.

This distinction matters: “developer beta 5” and “public beta 5” were not interchangeable labels. The developer release arrived first, while public-beta numbering later diverged from the developer sequence.

What changed in beta 5?
Beta 5 continued Apple’s visual and functional refinement of watchOS 26. Reporting specifically pointed to further changes to the Liquid Glass interface, including notification-related visual adjustments. It should not be described as introducing the entire watchOS 26 feature set on its own.
The broader watchOS 26 update included:
- Liquid Glass interface changes.
- A Notes app on Apple Watch.
- Workout Buddy.
- Smart Stack improvements.
- Wrist flick interactions.
- Improved Smart Replies.
- Live Translation support.
Most of those features had appeared earlier in the watchOS 26 development cycle. Beta 5’s significance was its continued polish and bug-fixing ahead of later testing—not a wholesale redesign released in one update.

Who could install it?
Beta 5 was primarily for developers testing WatchKit apps and compatibility with watchOS 26. Enthusiasts could also test it through Apple’s beta channels, but availability depended on enrollment, device compatibility, the paired iPhone’s software, and whether Apple was still serving that particular build.
Compatible watch models included:
- Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later.
- Apple Watch Series 6 and later.
- Apple Watch Ultra and later.
The paired phone also needed to be an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (3rd generation) or later, running the required iOS version. Compatibility with watchOS 26 did not guarantee that every feature worked on every watch model. See Apple’s Apple Watch update and compatibility requirements for the applicable device details.
How the beta installation path worked
Apple’s beta instructions use both the iPhone’s Settings app and the paired Apple Watch app:

Beta 5 made sense for a developer, a tester with a spare compatible Watch, or an enthusiast comfortable with unresolved bugs. It was a poor fit for anyone relying on a primary Watch for health tracking, workouts, sleep data, alarms, notifications, Apple Pay, or cellular connectivity.
Beta software can cause battery drain, crashes, connectivity problems, reduced performance, and incompatibility with apps or the paired iPhone. Back up the paired iPhone and Watch data before installing. Apple warns that an Apple Watch running beta software cannot be restored to a previously released watchOS version through a normal downgrade process.
Rank #4
- GET SMARTER HEALTH INSIGHTS—Apple Watch SE 3 is an advanced health tracker that helps you better understand your body. The smartwatch sends alerts for an irregular heart rhythm, or an unusually high or low heart rate.* You can view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app,* track your sleep score, and get sleep apnea notifications.*
- A GREAT FITNESS TRACKER—SE 3 can track your workouts in a healthy number of ways—from running and strength training to simply achieving your 10K steps a day. With real-time metrics and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone,* you’ll hit your goals like never before.

That makes the central trade-off straightforward: you gain early access to watchOS 26’s interface and features, but you accept instability and may need to remain on the beta track until a supported later release is available. Apple’s Beta Software FAQ documents the downgrade limitation.
What to do if the beta does not appear
- Confirm that the iPhone is running the required compatible iOS version.
- Recheck Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates.
- Confirm that the Apple Account is enrolled in the intended developer or public-beta channel.
- Check that the Watch model is supported.
- Make sure you are not confusing a developer beta with a public beta.
- Check Apple’s current beta documentation; an older build may no longer be served after a newer one replaces it.
If installation stalls or fails
Keep the Watch on its charger, leave the iPhone nearby and connected to Wi-Fi, and avoid interrupting the Watch while the Apple logo or progress bar is showing. If the process does not progress, restart the iPhone and Watch and try again.
If the Watch displays a red information icon or enters a recovery state, Apple recommends holding the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds, then releasing them when the Apple logo appears. If that does not fix the problem, service may be required. Apple notes that ordinary retail stores and authorized service providers may not be able to restore a beta-installed Apple Watch and that the device may need to be sent to Apple.

What happened after beta 5?
Apple released developer beta 6 on August 11, 2025, roughly one week later. Developer beta 8 followed on August 25, 2025, as Apple moved closer to the public release and increasingly focused on stability and performance.
The public-beta sequence did not map directly to the developer sequence. For example, reporting placed watchOS 26 public beta 5 on October 26, 2025, after the corresponding developer release. Therefore, a reference to “beta 5” should always identify the channel and release date.
Current status
watchOS 26 developer beta 5 is no longer a current update. It was a historical developer release from August 5, 2025, and should not be installed—or sought out—as though it were the latest Apple Watch software. Readers choosing an Apple Watch today should evaluate current watchOS support, battery life, health features, and hardware compatibility rather than buy a device specifically for this old beta.
