watchOS 26 is a released update for Apple Watch Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later, and every Apple Watch Ultra. It brings a Liquid Glass redesign, a rebuilt Workout app, Workout Buddy, Wrist Flick, Notes, Sleep Score, hypertension notifications and smarter Smart Stack suggestions. You’ll also need an iPhone 11 or later—or iPhone SE (3rd generation) or later—running iOS 26 or later. Compatibility does not guarantee access to every feature: some require newer watch hardware, an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone, supported languages or regional availability.
As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s support page lists updates through watchOS 26.6. Apple has previewed watchOS 27, so watchOS 26 is best understood as the current-generation software covered here, not the next unreleased watchOS. Apple’s watchOS 26 update information and compatibility guide have the latest details.
What’s new in watchOS 26?
Apple’s “26” naming aligns watchOS with its software generation for 2025–2026. It is a free software update, not a new watch model; you need a compatible paired iPhone to install it. The biggest changes affect the interface, workouts, communication and health features. The practical question is which changes your particular watch and iPhone can use.

|---|---|---|
| Liquid Glass | A refreshed, translucent look across selected system surfaces and apps | A selective redesign, not a complete replacement of watchOS navigation |
| Workout Buddy | Spoken, personalized encouragement during supported workouts | Requires compatible hardware, an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone nearby, Bluetooth headphones, and supported language and workout conditions |
| Wrist Flick | Dismiss or silence certain alerts with a one-handed wrist motion | Requires Series 9 or later, or Ultra 2 or later |
| Notes | View and manage notes, checklists and quick entries from the wrist | Best for short interactions; keyboard availability varies |
| Sleep Score and hypertension notifications | New ways to review sleep and receive a health-related alert | Wellness and notification features, not medical diagnoses; availability and eligibility vary |
| Smart Stack hints | More context-sensitive widget and app suggestions | Suggestions depend on context, permissions and app support |
Apple’s watchOS 26 announcement describes the changes; Apple’s feature-availability page is the better place to check whether a feature works in your language and country.

Liquid Glass: a visual refresh, not a new way to use the watch
Liquid Glass adds translucent, refractive treatments to selected parts of watchOS, including notifications, Control Center, Smart Stack widgets and hints, navigation and controls in apps, and the Photos watch face. It gives the watch a more consistent visual relationship with Apple’s other platforms, but the core interaction model remains familiar. Expect updated surfaces and visual hierarchy rather than every screen being transformed.
On the Photos face, Liquid Glass numerals are designed to leave more of the image visible. Apple’s watchOS guide also references faces including Flow, Exactograph and Waypoint. Face availability can depend on the model, so consult the Apple Watch user guide for current model-specific details.
Workouts: Workout Buddy and a redesigned app
The Workout app has a redesigned layout intended to make workout information and controls easier to reach. It can also suggest music based on your tastes and workout type. Music suggestions are distinct from Workout Buddy: music availability may rely on your library or Apple Music, while Workout Buddy has its own device and language requirements.
Recommended Free Tools
Workout Buddy uses Apple Intelligence to deliver spoken motivation based on information such as heart rate, pace, distance, activity-ring progress, fitness history, milestones and workout performance. It can offer encouragement during an eligible workout and a recap afterward. It is a motivational feature, not a human coach, medical professional or substitute for professional advice.

To use Workout Buddy, you need a compatible Apple Watch, Bluetooth headphones, a supported workout and language, and an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone nearby. Apple’s launch announcement named iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 models; device support and availability can change, so check Apple’s current feature-availability details rather than assuming every iPhone that can run iOS 26 will work. Apple currently lists Workout Buddy for English-language availability including English (United States); it is not universally available.
Wrist Flick and other convenience changes
Wrist Flick is a one-handed gesture for situations when your other hand is occupied. Apple says it can dismiss notifications, mute incoming calls, silence timers and alarms, and return to the watch face. It is separate from Double Tap, and is not available on every watch that can install watchOS 26: Apple identifies Series 9 and later and Ultra 2 and later as supported. See Apple’s Wrist Flick support information for the applicable model list.
watchOS 26 can also adjust Apple Watch speaker volume for notifications, timers, alarms, incoming calls and Siri based on ambient noise. This may make alerts more appropriate to the setting, but it cannot guarantee that a sound will be audible in every environment.

Smarter Smart Stack suggestions
Smart Stack hints can surface widgets or app suggestions based on factors such as location, time, activity, installed apps and other circumstances. Apple’s example is a ski-related app appearing when someone arrives at a ski resort. Suggestions are contextual, not guaranteed: location permissions, installed apps, developer support and Apple’s relevance logic all matter. Developers can also build controls and widgets using Apple’s Control Widget API.

Notes, Messages and calls
The Notes app on Apple Watch lets you view and pin notes, unlock protected notes, complete checklist items and create notes with Siri or dictation. You may also be able to use the keyboard, depending on watch model, display, language and region. The watch is useful for a quick reminder or checklist item, but less suited to writing or editing long notes. Notes rely on the user’s Apple setup and iCloud synchronization.
Messages gains Live Translation, while watchOS 26 also adds communication features tied to the paired iPhone. Call Screening can gather a caller’s name and reason for calling before you decide whether to answer. Hold Assist can recognize when a live agent becomes available and notify you. These features can depend on the iPhone being nearby, language, region and local telecommunications rules; check Apple’s availability information for your market.
Health features: Sleep Score and hypertension notifications
Sleep Score offers a way to interpret sleep quality and follow whether sleep appears to be becoming more restorative. Treat it as a wellness metric based on sleep-related measurements and trends, not a diagnosis or a full clinical assessment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHypertension notifications are alerts, not a blood-pressure reading or a diagnosis of high blood pressure. A notification does not prove you have hypertension; speak with a clinician for medical advice and confirmation. Eligibility and availability can depend on country, regulatory authorization, watch hardware, age and other criteria. Check Apple’s country-by-country feature list and current watchOS support information.

Which Apple Watches support watchOS 26?
| Apple Watch | watchOS 26 compatible? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Series 6, 7 and 8 | Yes | They can run the update, but do not get every newer hardware-dependent feature. Series 7 is among models mentioned in Apple release notes for battery-capacity recalibration. |
| Series 9 and 10 | Yes | Series 9 and later support Wrist Flick; other feature requirements still apply. |
| Series 11 | Yes | Part of the watchOS 26 generation; feature availability still varies. |
| SE (2nd generation) | Yes | The first-generation SE is not compatible; some newer interactions are unavailable on SE 2. |
| SE (3rd generation) | Yes | Confirm paired iPhone and feature requirements separately. |
| Apple Watch Ultra, Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 | Yes | The original Ultra is included. Wrist Flick requires Ultra 2 or later. |
| Series 5 and earlier; SE (1st generation) | No | These models cannot upgrade to watchOS 26, though they may use the latest software available for their model. |
Apple’s full compatibility list should take precedence if a model or release changes. The central distinction is simple: watchOS compatibility is not feature compatibility. Series 6 owners, for example, qualify for watchOS 26 but not Wrist Flick.
iPhone requirements and feature tiers
To install watchOS 26, you need an iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (3rd generation) or later, running iOS 26 or later. A compatible watch paired to an older iPhone is not enough. Some features—especially Workout Buddy—also require Apple Intelligence support, a nearby eligible iPhone, Bluetooth headphones and a supported language or region. Those requirements are stricter than the basic update requirement.

If the update will not install
- Restart both the iPhone and Apple Watch, then check again.
- Confirm that iOS 26 or later is installed on the paired iPhone.
- Place the watch on its charger and verify Wi-Fi connectivity.
- Free storage by removing unused apps and downloaded media.
- If Apple’s update servers are busy, wait and try again later.
- If the watch remains stuck, contact Apple Support rather than unpairing it as a first step. Do not remove it from its charger or force-restart it during installation unless Apple Support tells you to.
Should you update—or buy a newer watch?
If your watch is compatible, you do not need to buy a new one just to get watchOS 26. Whether new hardware is worthwhile depends on which features you actually want.
- Series 6–8: You remain eligible for the update and can get the redesigned software, but not every new gesture or intelligence-based feature. Keep the watch if your current hardware meets your needs; consider newer hardware if Wrist Flick or other model-specific capabilities are a priority.
- Series 9–10: You get a broader set of the new interactions, including Wrist Flick. Review the individual iPhone, language and regional requirements before upgrading solely for a feature.
- SE 2: You can install watchOS 26. It is a sensible keep-and-update choice for basic notifications, activity and workouts; the first-generation SE is not supported.
- Original Ultra: It remains compatible. Ultra 2 or later is required for Wrist Flick, so do not confuse Ultra compatibility with access to every newer feature.
- Newer models: They have the broadest access to model-dependent features, but features can still require a supported iPhone, language or country.
- Series 5 or first-generation SE: You cannot install watchOS 26. If the lack of current software support or a specific new capability matters to you, that may be a reason to consider newer hardware.
For anyone, battery behavior after an update can vary by model and use; there is no basis here to promise a battery-life improvement or decline. A major visual refresh may also take some adjustment. If you rely on a health or communication feature, confirm its availability for your model and country before treating it as a reason to upgrade.
Is watchOS 26 worth installing?
For owners of compatible watches, watchOS 26 is most compelling if you want the updated interface, revised workout experience, new convenience features or expanded health and communication tools. The case is more modest if you will not use those features or your model misses the ones you care about. Check the watch and iPhone requirements first, then update without buying new hardware unless a specific model-restricted feature justifies it.
