watchOS 26 is a real, free Apple Watch update released in September 2025, but it is no longer Apple’s newest major watchOS release as of August 16, 2026; Apple has since announced watchOS 27. watchOS 26’s defining changes are the Liquid Glass interface, Workout Buddy’s generated spoken coaching, and broader developer integration with Smart Stack and system controls. The watch update itself supports Apple Watch Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later, and every Apple Watch Ultra when paired with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26. Workout Buddy has stricter iPhone, headphone, language, workout and regional requirements.
watchOS 26 at a glance
| Change | What it does | Requirements and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid Glass | Applies translucent, reflective and refractive materials to major system surfaces, including Smart Stack, Control Center, notifications, controls and the Photos watch face. | Available on compatible watches; third-party apps must adopt Apple’s watchOS 26 design APIs for equivalent treatment. |
| Workout Buddy | Uses workout metrics and fitness history to generate spoken encouragement, milestones and a closing recap. | Compatible watch, Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone nearby, Bluetooth headphones, supported language and region, and one of Apple’s supported workout types. |
| Contextual third-party widgets | Lets developers make Smart Stack widgets surface based on time, place, routines and other context. | Only apps whose developers implement the Smart Stack Relevance API can use it. |
| Third-party controls | Apps can expose actions in Control Center, Smart Stack widget areas and, on supported watches, the Action Button. | Requires developer adoption and hardware with an Action Button for that specific surface. |
Apple announced watchOS 26 at WWDC on June 9, 2025. It became publicly available on September 15, 2025, according to MacRumors. Apple describes the update and its compatibility in its watchOS 26 announcement.
What Liquid Glass changes on Apple Watch
Liquid Glass is Apple’s cross-platform visual system for watchOS 26 and iOS 26. Apple says its materials use real-time rendering to reflect and refract the content behind them. On the watch, that is most visible in system-owned surfaces rather than as a blanket filter over every app.

- Smart Stack: widgets use the new layered treatment and updated hierarchy.
- Control Center: controls receive the redesigned translucent presentation.
- Notifications: alerts use Liquid Glass materials and spacing.
- Apps and navigation: Apple’s updated controls and navigation adopt the new visual language.
- Photos watch face: Liquid Glass numerals reveal more of the photograph instead of covering it with an opaque block.
- Watch-face gallery: the gallery and selected system faces receive updated presentation.
This is more than a color change because layers, emphasis and navigation controls are rearranged around the new material. It is still primarily a visual and interaction redesign: Apple has not published a universal battery-life penalty or performance measurement for Liquid Glass. Readability can vary with a busy background, small text, transparency preferences or a need for high contrast. Users who depend on large text or reduced transparency should check the accessibility settings after updating.

What happens in third-party apps
System screens are controlled by Apple. A third-party app does not automatically receive identical Liquid Glass surfaces simply because the watch runs watchOS 26. Developers need to adopt the relevant SwiftUI, WidgetKit and other watchOS APIs, so older apps may look comparatively unchanged. Apple’s developer session explains the implementation path at WWDC 2025 session 334.
Workout Buddy: what the AI coach actually does
Workout Buddy is a structured stream of generated speech during a workout, not an open-ended chatbot conversation. It can combine heart rate, pace, distance, Activity-ring progress, milestones, workout-specific performance and historical fitness information to produce an opening pep talk, progress announcements, encouragement and an end-of-workout recap. Apple says its voice uses a text-to-speech model built with voice data from Fitness+ trainers. Details are in Apple’s Apple Intelligence announcement.
Supported workout types at launch
- Outdoor Run and Indoor Run
- Outdoor Walk and Indoor Walk
- Outdoor Cycle
- HIIT
- Functional Strength Training
- Traditional Strength Training
It is motivational software, not medical advice, a diagnostic tool or a replacement for a qualified coach. It also does not cover every workout mode.

Hardware, software and audio requirements
Apple’s support documentation lists Workout Buddy in English on Apple Watch Series 6 and later, all Apple Watch Ultra models, and Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone nearby and Bluetooth headphones: Apple Support article 121115. Apple’s original launch requirements identified iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and all iPhone 16 models, with Apple Intelligence enabled and the device and Siri languages aligned. Availability can vary by language and region.
The watch is not the complete original processing environment. The iPhone must be nearby, and the first watchOS 26 implementation should not be described as an offline, watch-only coach. Headphone routing also matters: Apple’s watchOS 26 release notes specify announcements on AirPods with H1 or later when connected to the watch or iPhone, while third-party Bluetooth headphones are supported when connected to the iPhone. “Bluetooth headphones supported” therefore does not mean every headset works through every connection path.
If Workout Buddy is unavailable
- Confirm the watch model and that watchOS 26 is installed.
- Check that the paired iPhone is an Apple Intelligence-capable model running iOS 26.
- Turn on Apple Intelligence and verify that device and Siri languages match a supported language.
- Connect compatible Bluetooth headphones and keep the iPhone nearby.
- Select one of the supported workout categories.
- Check region availability, volume, Focus, silent mode and audio routing if announcements are missing.
What “third-party widgets” means in watchOS 26
watchOS 26 does not introduce a general third-party watch-face store or an unrestricted widget marketplace. The expansion is inside Apple-defined system spaces: Smart Stack, Control Center and, on eligible hardware, the Action Button.

Smarter Smart Stack widgets
The Smart Stack Relevance API lets an app provide context signals such as time, location, a user routine, a point of interest or sensor context. The system can then elevate that widget when it is likely to help. Apple’s example is a Slopes widget appearing when the wearer reaches a ski resort. Location-triggered behavior still depends on the relevant user permission and on the app implementing the feature.

Controls in system surfaces
The Control Widget API lets developers expose a focused action without requiring the full app to open. A control can appear in Control Center, in Smart Stack widget areas and on the Action Button where the watch has one. Apple illustrates the idea with Dark Noise starting a sleep soundscape from a system control. These are app-provided actions, not a universal switch that turns any app function into a control.
What developers must build
Apple’s developer materials describe controls built with WidgetKit and the migration of ClockKit complications to WidgetKit. Apps may need availability checks and updated implementations before configurable widgets, relevance signals or controls appear. See the WidgetKit portion of WWDC 2025 session 334.

Compatibility: the watch update versus the headline features
The operating-system requirement and the AI-feature requirement are different decisions.
| Question | What you need |
|---|---|
| Can the watch install watchOS 26? | Apple Watch Series 6 or later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) or later, or any Apple Watch Ultra, paired with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26. |
| Can it run Workout Buddy? | A supported watch plus an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone nearby, Bluetooth headphones, supported language and region, and a supported workout. |
| Will a favorite app show a contextual widget? | The app must ship watchOS 26 support, implement Smart Stack relevance, and have any needed permissions enabled. |
| Can an app use the Action Button? | The watch must have an Action Button and the app must provide a compatible control. |
An older iPhone can therefore pair with a watch that supports watchOS 26 while still blocking Workout Buddy. Conversely, a supported watch does not guarantee that every app has adopted the new APIs.
Other meaningful watchOS 26 changes
- Workout app: a new layout and personalized music suggestions based on workout type and listening preferences.
- Smart Stack hints: proactive suggestions for actions and information.
- Messages: Live Translation features tied to Apple Intelligence availability.
- Wrist flick: dismiss notifications and calls, silence alarms or return to the watch face with a wrist gesture on supported hardware and settings.
- Notes: Apple’s Notes app comes to Apple Watch.
- Health: sleep score and hypertension notifications are among the additions Apple lists.
Apple’s feature overview is available at Apple Support. Availability for individual health, translation and intelligence features can vary by model, language and region.

Should you install watchOS 26 or buy hardware for it?
It is a strong update if you already have compatible hardware
- You want the redesigned system interface and use Smart Stack or Control Center frequently.
- You exercise with headphones and own an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone.
- You use apps likely to adopt contextual widgets or controls.
- You want the redesigned Workout app, Notes, wrist-flick gesture or new health features.
Expect less benefit in these cases
- Your watch cannot run watchOS 26.
- Your iPhone cannot run Apple Intelligence, so Workout Buddy is unavailable.
- You exercise without headphones or use an unsupported workout mode.
- You are buying primarily for a third-party watch-face ecosystem; watchOS 26 does not provide one.
- You prefer an opaque, high-contrast interface and find translucency difficult to read.
For a new purchase, choose the watch, iPhone and headphones as a system. A watchOS 26-compatible watch alone does not deliver the complete Workout Buddy experience. Apple’s current product pages are Apple Watch, Apple Watch Ultra, Apple Watch SE, iPhone and AirPods. watchOS 26 itself is a free software update; current hardware prices should be checked directly with Apple rather than inferred from older listings.
watchOS 26 is not watchOS 27
As of August 16, 2026, watchOS 27 has been announced. Apple’s 2026 material describes later capabilities, including expanded Workout Buddy behavior and configurations that can operate without the iPhone nearby in some circumstances. Those are watchOS 27 developments and must not be attributed to the original watchOS 26 release. See Apple’s June 2026 announcement and its Apple Intelligence update for that later-generation context.
