Yes—Google released Wear OS 5.1, an Android 15-based smartwatch platform update that began rolling out to Pixel Watches on March 4, 2025. It was a software update, not a new watch or a phone version of Android installed on every Wear OS device. As of August 18, 2026, it is no longer Google’s latest smartwatch platform: Wear OS 7 began rolling out to eligible Pixel Watches on June 16, 2026.
What Wear OS 5.1 actually was
Wear OS 5.1 was Google’s wearable operating-system release built on Android 15. In technical terms, it uses Android API level 35; that shared API level is why the shorthand “Android 15 for smartwatches” is understandable. It does not mean a watch runs the same interface, apps, or capabilities as an Android 15 phone. Wear OS remains a watch-specific platform, with features and behavior shaped by the watch hardware, apps, and manufacturer software.
Google’s Wear OS 5.1 developer documentation explains the API-level relationship and the compatibility changes developers should consider. Other manufacturers can add their own software layers, such as Samsung’s One UI Watch, so a Pixel Watch feature list should not be assumed to apply identically to every Wear OS watch.

Google announced the Pixel Watch rollout on March 4, 2025. Its developer documentation lists March 4 availability for Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 Bluetooth/Wi-Fi models, followed by March 18 for the original Pixel Watch and the LTE versions of Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3. These are rollout dates, not a promise that every eligible watch received the update on the same day: Google used a phased rollout, and carrier or device configuration could affect timing.
#1 Best Overall
- The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
- Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
- Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
- Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
- Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]
The confirmed Pixel Watch models were:
- Google Pixel Watch
- Google Pixel Watch 2
- Google Pixel Watch 3
Both Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and LTE variants were included, with the timing differences above. Google’s March 2025 Pixel Watch announcement and the developer version history provide the model and timing details. The announcement does not establish that every Wear OS watch from Samsung, OnePlus, Mobvoi, Xiaomi, or another maker received the same build or features. Those updates depend on each manufacturer’s model, software branch, region, and rollout schedule.
What changed for Pixel Watch owners
| Change | Where it applied | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Loss of Pulse Detection expansion | Pixel Watch 3 in the United States | Google described expanded availability following FDA clearance. It is a safety feature, not a general heart-rate or wellness reading, and availability depends on model and market. |
| Menstrual-health updates | Pixel Watch 3 through the Fitbit app experience | Included easier period logging, cycle-status viewing, and predictions. Some improvements were app-dependent rather than solely part of the operating system. |
| More contextual media controls | Pixel Watches, depending on the media app | Controls could better reflect the content, such as podcasts in YouTube Music; app support and media-session behavior affect what appears. |
| Step-count algorithm changes | Initially announced for situations including pushing a cart, using a wheelchair, or walking with a stroller | Google later reverted the enhancement for affected users after reports of inflated counts. It should not be described as an unqualified lasting improvement. |
| Automatic Bedtime Mode | Pixel Watch 2 | The watch can detect sleep or waking and manage Bedtime Mode automatically; this was not a universal addition across all generations. |
| Bug fixes and performance work | Supported Pixel Watch builds | Later releases addressed issues including delayed notifications and watch-face changes through the phone app. |
Google’s initial release notes describe the announced features. The step-count story changed: Google’s follow-up update says the enhancement was reverted for affected users. Subsequent updates also addressed problems reported after the March release, including watch-face management and notifications (April update notice).

These distinctions matter because an operating-system rollout, a Fitbit or Play Store app update, and a feature enabled only for a particular model or country are not the same thing. Safety and health functions can also depend on regulatory clearance and local availability; check the feature’s current terms for your location rather than assuming that a model name alone guarantees access.
How to check for the update
- Charge the watch adequately—Google’s update guidance recommends at least 50 percent battery—and connect it to Wi-Fi if possible.
- On the watch, open Settings, then System, then System updates.
- Check for an update and follow the on-screen installation prompts. Keep the watch powered during installation.
- Afterward, check for app updates in Google Play, including Fitbit-related updates if relevant.
Menu names can vary by software version and manufacturer, so this path is for Pixel Watch rather than a universal Wear OS instruction. If Wear OS 5.1 did not appear immediately, that did not necessarily mean the watch was ineligible: Google staggered availability by model and carrier, and LTE variants could lag. Wait for the rollout, retry on Wi-Fi after a restart, and make sure the companion apps and phone software are current. If an eligible watch remained stuck well after the rollout, contact Google support rather than sideloading unofficial images or factory-resetting as a first step.

Google published historical build identifiers for the 2025 rollout, including BP1A.250305.019.W2 for the original Pixel Watch and BP1A.250305.019.W3 for Pixel Watch 2 and 3, followed by later April builds. These identify that rollout period; they are not the current software version to expect in 2026.
Is Wear OS 5.1 still worth caring about in 2026?
For an existing Pixel Watch owner, it remains relevant as a major historical update and as the source of features or fixes delivered during that period. But it is not the current platform to target when choosing a new watch. Google says Wear OS 7 began rolling out to eligible Pixel Watch devices on June 16, 2026. Which newer version a particular watch can run depends on its model and support status.

- Google Pixel Watch has a beautiful circular, domed design and new experience with Wear OS by Google, so it’s easy to get help at a glance
- Stay on top of activity, calories burned, and more with Fitbit activity tracking
- Track your heart rate and get insight into your sleep
- Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
- Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist
If you already own a Pixel Watch 1, 2, or 3, install the latest update offered for your specific device; do not upgrade hardware solely to obtain Wear OS 5.1. If you are buying in 2026, weigh the watch’s current update runway, phone compatibility, battery and charging, LTE carrier support, app ecosystem, repair and accessory costs, and country availability of any health or safety features. The Wear OS device directory is a starting point for seeing the range of manufacturers, but it does not make their features or update schedules interchangeable.
Pixel Watch is the clearest fit for someone seeking Google’s own watch experience and Fitbit integration, while Galaxy Watch can suit Samsung phone owners who value Samsung Health and the One UI Watch layer. Buyers prioritizing battery endurance may prefer to compare current OnePlus or Mobvoi models. Those are product trade-offs, not consequences of Wear OS 5.1 alone. Confirm the exact model’s support policy and feature availability before buying; an older Pixel Watch is a better value only if its price reflects its age and shorter remaining update horizon.
