Wear OS already supports Google Wallet hotel keys, campus IDs, and corporate badges—this is no longer just an upcoming feature. Google began rolling out access-card support in December 2024. But a credential appearing in Google Wallet on your phone does not guarantee it will work on your watch: the issuer, watch software, region, and access readers all have to support the same setup.
What works—and what determines whether it works for you
Google added hotel keys, campus IDs, and corporate badges to the access-card categories supported by Google Wallet on Wear OS through Google Play services 24.47. The change began rolling out on December 2, 2024, rather than requiring a full Wear OS platform upgrade. Google’s current help pages still list these credential types and explain how eligible Wallet passes can appear on a synced watch (rollout coverage; Google Wallet supported items; Wallet passes on Wear OS).

Think of support as a chain, not a single switch: Google Wallet must support the credential type; the issuer must offer that credential in Wallet; the issuer must support using it on Wear OS; your watch and software must be eligible; and the actual reader or lock must accept it. A break anywhere in that chain can leave you with a phone-based credential but no working watch key.
Watch and phone requirements
For general Google Wallet pass synchronization, Google’s Wear OS help page specifies Wear OS 3.5 or newer and Google Wallet for Wear OS version 23.46.x or newer. The watch needs an internet or mobile-data connection when syncing passes, and expired passes may not appear. Fitbit devices are not included in this documented Wear OS Wallet pass feature.

Google’s corporate-badge page gives a different minimum, listing Wear OS 2 or newer, while the general Wear OS pass page specifies 3.5 or newer. Because those help pages are not fully aligned, treat Wear OS 3.5 or later as the safer practical baseline for current pass syncing rather than assuming Wear OS 2 will work. Corporate-badge setup also calls for an Android phone running Android 9 or newer, NFC enabled on the phone, and Google Wallet installed. Check Google’s Wear OS requirements and corporate badge instructions for current details.
Feature availability can vary by country or region, issuer, device, and credential type. Keep the watch paired and Wallet current, and check with the school, employer, or hotel before relying on it. Google does not provide a universal compatibility list covering every campus, workplace, hotel, lock, and Wear OS watch.
Using a corporate badge
If your employer supports watch badges, start in the employer’s app or website on your Android phone, find the badge, and tap Add to Google Wallet. If prompted, select your watch, tap Continue, and verify your identity using the phone’s screen lock or password.

A compatible mobile badge may open buildings and support parking or printing, but access depends on the employer’s system and the specific site or reader. Google says the watch generally needs to be awake at the reader; it does not necessarily need to be unlocked. Follow your organization’s security policy if it requires additional steps.
Using a campus ID
Campus credentials are generally issued through the school’s app or website. Open the campus ID there, tap Add to Google Wallet, verify your identity with your device screen lock or password, and accept the terms. The school and its credential provider decide whether the ID can be provisioned to a Wear OS watch.
Depending on the institution, a campus ID can cover building entry, campus payments, and details such as account balances or emergency phone numbers. Those capabilities are not universal, and a campus ID in phone Wallet does not by itself prove that the watch version is supported. Ask the school’s card office or IT team whether it explicitly supports Google Wallet on Wear OS. See Google’s campus ID setup guide and access credential documentation.

Using a hotel key
The hotel—not Google Wallet alone—starts the process. Open the hotel’s app or website, or a reservation email, and choose Add to Google Wallet. Sign in to the Google Account associated with Wallet, tap Add, then View in Wallet if offered. You usually need to check in and receive an assigned room before the key activates.

A hotel key may open your room and other areas controlled by the property’s access system, such as an elevator, gym, or pool. The key normally expires at checkout. Whether it works from a watch depends on the hotel, the lock hardware, and the credential deployment. Google’s hotel-key help is mainly phone-focused and does not provide a universal Wear OS compatibility list, so confirm watch support with the property before leaving a physical key behind. NFC, Bluetooth, and QR codes are not interchangeable
Many physical access readers use an NFC tap, and Google’s corporate-badge guidance describes presenting the device to a reader. Hotel implementations may use NFC or Bluetooth. QR-code and barcode passes instead rely on the watch display and a compatible scanner. Some systems use a provider-specific mobile credential. Ask the issuer what its readers require; “Google Wallet support” does not mean every credential uses the same radio or scanner.
Does the watch work without the phone?
You may be able to present a provisioned credential directly from the watch at a compatible reader, without pulling out the phone. That is different from being fully independent of the phone: initial setup, identity verification, syncing, hotel check-in or room assignment, employer authorization, and recovery can still depend on a phone or issuer app. Google also identifies watch connectivity as a possible reason a pass added on a phone does not appear on the watch.

Do not count on access if the watch battery is dead, the pass has expired or been revoked, or the credential has not finished syncing. Carry the physical badge or room key—or keep your phone available—until you have tested the watch at the doors you actually need.

How to check compatibility before relying on it
- Check the watch: Confirm Wear OS 3.5 or newer as a conservative baseline, update Google Wallet on the phone and watch, and make sure the devices are paired.
- Ask the issuer the precise question: Does this specific badge, campus ID, or hotel key support Google Wallet on Wear OS—not just Google Wallet on Android?
- Confirm the reader: Ask whether access uses NFC, Bluetooth, QR/barcode, or another system, and whether every relevant entrance or service supports the mobile credential.
- Test real access points: Try a main entrance and, where relevant, an elevator, parking gate, printer, or amenity door. Check the hotel room key after check-in.
- Test the fallback plan: Keep the phone or physical credential available while you test, and find out how a pass is replaced or revoked if the watch is lost or reset.
For an employer or campus, check compatibility with the existing access-control provider, reader fleet, provisioning and revocation workflow, and policies for personally owned watches. A hotel operator should verify its lock and property-management systems before promising watch access to guests.

The credential is on the phone but not the watch
Check that the watch has connectivity and is paired, Wallet is updated, the pass has not expired, and the watch meets the software requirement. The issuer may support phone Wallet without supporting watch provisioning. A reset or unpairing may also interrupt setup; follow the issuer’s re-provisioning process if needed. Google lists connectivity and expired passes among reasons a pass may not appear (Wear OS pass help).
“Add ID to watch” is missing
Confirm that the badge came from a participating employer, the watch is paired and selected, Wallet is installed and current on both devices, and the badge is not already assigned to another watch. Ask the employer whether watch issuance is enabled for your account. Google warns that rooted devices and devices with custom ROMs or modified factory software may not work with Wallet (corporate badge help).
The reader rejects the watch
The reader may not accept mobile credentials, the credential may not be authorized for that site, or the pass may be expired or revoked. You may also be presenting the watch at the wrong part of the reader, or the system may require Bluetooth, a QR scan, or the phone rather than an NFC tap. Ask the issuer to identify the expected method and check that the watch is presenting the correct credential.

A hotel key is present but inactive
Confirm that you have checked in and been assigned a room, then ask the hotel whether the key has been activated and whether its lock system supports watch use. If the phone key works but the watch does not, the hotel may support the phone credential without supporting its Wear OS counterpart.
Security, loss, and replacement
A Google Wallet credential is not the same as a photograph of a badge. A photo may be scannable at some barcode readers, but it is not a general substitute for a credential issued and managed by the organization; it may lack the credential’s device binding, revocation, and access controls. Do not rely on a screenshot as a way to reproduce a badge or key.
If a watch with a corporate badge is lost, use Google’s device-finding tools to locate, lock, or erase it and notify your employer promptly. The employer or access administrator may be able to revoke the credential separately from Wallet. For a campus ID or hotel key, contact the school or property and follow its procedure; revocation and replacement depend on that issuer. A reset or replacement watch may require the credential to be issued again.

Who should rely on a watch credential?
This is useful for travelers at participating hotels, students at supported campuses, and employees whose organizations issue Wear OS-compatible mobile badges. It is a poor sole-access plan for an unsupported property or school, a card-only workplace, an older or ineligible watch, or any situation where a failed tap would leave you stranded. Confirm the issuer and test the actual reader first; choose a watch for this feature only after that compatibility check.
