Watch only mode turns a compatible Galaxy Watch into a basic timepiece. The display remains available, while smartwatch functions—such as notifications, calls, apps and phone connections—are disabled to preserve as much battery as possible without completely powering down the watch.
It is more restrictive than Power saving mode, and the menu and exit procedure depend on whether your watch uses Wear OS or older Tizen software.
What Watch only mode does
Samsung describes Watch only as a way to use the device like a normal watch when smart functions are unnecessary. In practical terms, the watch keeps its core time display and shuts down most of the software and connections that drain the battery.

This is not the same as turning off the screen, enabling Airplane mode, using Power saving mode or powering the watch down completely:

- Watch only: the watch remains available primarily to show the time, with smartwatch functions disabled.
- Power saving: reduces consumption but can retain limited features, including Bluetooth calls, messages and notifications on supported models.
- Airplane mode: disables wireless communications but is not necessarily a complete smartwatch shutdown.
- Powered off: the watch is not running and does not display the time.
Samsung’s descriptions support the time-display function, but not a universal list of retained features. Treat alarms, timers, stopwatch functions, custom watch-face behavior, touch interaction and sensors as model- and software-dependent rather than guaranteed.
Watch only vs. Power saving, Airplane mode and off
The table shows the general behavior. Samsung’s exact implementation can vary by model, operating system and software release.

Watch only should therefore be your choice when the time is all you need. Choose Power saving when you still need some smartwatch capability.
What stops working?
While Watch only is active, do not expect normal smartwatch behavior. The following are generally unavailable:

Samsung specifically advises disabling Watch only when troubleshooting a watch that does not vibrate or when Samsung Health data will not sync. The mode does not by itself mean that existing health data has been deleted; it can simply prevent the functions needed to transfer or synchronize it.
How to turn on Watch only mode
Galaxy Watch4 and newer Wear OS models
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap Battery and device care.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap or swipe to Watch only.
- Scroll down and tap Turn on.
Samsung’s labels and screen arrangement can differ slightly after an update. If you do not see the option, look under Settings → Battery as well.
Older Tizen Galaxy Watch models
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Power mode.
- Select Watch only.
Some older software versions show Watch only directly under the Battery screen instead of inside Power mode.
How to exit Watch only mode
Tizen watches
On older Tizen models, open Settings → Battery → Power mode and select Standard.

Wear OS watches
Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance uses a power cycle: press and hold the Power/Home key to turn the watch off, then press and hold it again to turn the watch back on. After booting, allow it to reconnect to the Galaxy Wearable app before testing notifications or Samsung Health.
When Watch only mode is useful
- Critically low battery: preserve enough charge to keep telling time.
- Overnight timekeeping: use the watch as a basic clock when sleep tracking and notifications are not needed.
- Travel or events: avoid interruptions and conserve power between charging opportunities.
- Temporary battery preservation: keep the display available without the drain of a full smartwatch session.
Use Power saving instead if you still need notifications or Bluetooth features. Use Airplane mode when you mainly want wireless radios disabled but still need local watch functions. Turn the watch off if you will not use it and want to minimize active drain.
Troubleshooting
The Watch only option is missing
Confirm the exact model and software. Galaxy Watch generations use different operating systems, and Samsung’s menus differ between Wear OS and Tizen. Also make sure the device is a Galaxy Watch rather than a Galaxy Fit or another Samsung wearable. Check both Settings → Battery and Settings → Battery and device care → Battery.
The watch appears stuck in Watch only
- Place it on a Samsung-approved charger and allow it to gain charge if the battery is critically low.
- Use the normal exit procedure for its operating system.
- If it is unresponsive, perform the model-specific force restart. On some older Galaxy Watches, Samsung says holding the Home/Power key for more than seven seconds restarts the device; this is not universal.
- Reconnect through Galaxy Wearable and check Samsung Health afterward.
Samsung Health will not sync
- Exit Watch only mode.
- Restart the watch if needed.
- Open Galaxy Wearable and confirm the Bluetooth connection.
- Open Samsung Health and retry synchronization.
- Check that Airplane mode and Power saving are not also blocking required connections.
Notifications or vibration do not return
Confirm that the watch has restarted into Standard mode and is connected in Galaxy Wearable. If the problem persists, review notification permissions and Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance; Watch only itself intentionally suppresses these functions.

The watch will not wake
Press the Home/Power key, then charge it before trying another restart. A dark or simplified screen after enabling Watch only does not by itself indicate hardware damage.
Battery and charger considerations
Watch only reduces active power consumption; it does not increase battery capacity or charging speed. Do not rely on a fixed number of extra hours: battery life varies with model, battery age, temperature, software, display settings, network conditions, charging history and starting charge level.
Samsung recommends chargers and accessories approved for the specific watch. Third-party charging accessories may not charge correctly, so match a replacement charger to your exact model. If battery life remains poor, use Samsung Members diagnostics or contact Samsung Support before assuming that a new watch is required.
Important model caveat
Do not assume every Galaxy Watch has identical Watch only behavior or even the same menu. Samsung separates instructions for Wear OS and Tizen devices, and availability can depend on the model and software version. Some owners report highly restricted low-battery behavior occurring automatically on newer watches, but that is not a universal, documented rule. Treat Watch only as a manually selected mode unless Samsung confirms automatic activation for your model.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Watch only mode turn off a Galaxy Watch?
No. It leaves the watch running mainly as a timepiece. Powering the watch off is a separate action.
Can I receive calls or texts in Watch only mode?
No. Normal notifications, calls, messages and phone connections should be unavailable until you exit the mode.
Will Watch only delete my Samsung Health data?
There is no indication that enabling it automatically deletes data. It can prevent synchronization while active; exit the mode and reconnect before troubleshooting missing data.
Does it work identically on Watch4, Watch5, Watch6, Watch7, Watch8 and Ultra models?
Not necessarily. Menu labels and behavior depend on the exact model and software version, so follow the Wear OS instructions and verify the option on your watch.
Can a Galaxy Watch enter Watch only automatically when the battery is low?
