The June 2025 Pixel Watch update made supported transit payments quicker: you can tap a configured transit card with Google Wallet closed. For a regular credit or debit card, you must first opt in to tapping without opening Wallet. Either way, the watch must be unlocked, and transit support depends on the city and card.
This is a retrospective, not a new update: Google began the rollout on June 10, 2025, for Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2, and Pixel Watch 3. The global build was BW1A.250605.004, with a June 5, 2025 security patch. Google’s June update notice described the payment change and other additions.
What changed for tap-to-pay?
The main convenience is that you no longer need to open Google Wallet immediately before every tap. After setting up a supported payment method, bring the unlocked watch near a compatible reader.
- Transit cards: Google said supported municipal transit cards could be tapped with Wallet closed. This behavior was described as automatically enabled for supported cards.
- Credit and debit cards: You can also use your default card without opening Wallet, but you must opt in through Wallet settings on the watch.
“Wallet closed” does not mean “no setup” or “no security.” Add the card or pass beforehand, and unlock the watch when required. If the watch locks after you take it off, you may need to unlock it again before paying.

- Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]
Where does the transit feature work?
Google’s June 2025 announcement initially named supported transit systems in Washington, D.C., Seattle, and Toronto. That is not a promise of support for every fare system in those cities, nor does it mean every contactless transit reader worldwide will accept a Pixel Watch payment. Compatibility depends on the transit agency and specific card or fare system.
Bank and card eligibility also vary by country, issuer, and card. An NFC reader by itself does not guarantee that a particular card or transit pass will work. Check Google’s current Pixel Watch transit-payment help and your transit agency’s payment guidance for your exact card and route.

Does this apply to your watch?
| Question | What Google announced |
|---|---|
| Which watches? | Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2, and Pixel Watch 3. |
| Which software? | The update was for Pixel watches on Wear OS 5 and Wear OS 5.1; it is not a blanket firmware update for every Wear OS watch. |
| Global build? | BW1A.250605.004, with the June 5, 2025 security patch. |
| Any regional exception? | Japan and Singapore cellular models received a later July 2025 rollout, build BW1A.250605.004.J2. |
Google said the rollout was phased, so timing could vary by carrier, device, and region. For the Japan and Singapore cellular variant, see Google’s July 2025 regional notice.
How to check for and install the update
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap System, then System updates.
- If an update is offered, follow the on-watch prompts to install it.
- After installation, check the watch’s system or about information to confirm the build and security patch.
If the watch says it is up to date, that may simply mean the phased rollout has not reached it yet. Make sure the watch has sufficient battery and a reliable connection, then check again later. Google’s official Pixel Watch OTA repository is intended for advanced users; sideloading is not a necessary routine fix.

- The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
- See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
- Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
How to use the Wallet-closed behavior
- Install the June 2025 update and add a supported card or transit pass to Google Wallet.
- For a credit or debit card, open Wallet settings on the watch and enable the opt-in for tapping without first opening Wallet. The exact wording can vary by software and region.
- Keep the watch unlocked, then hold it close to the compatible payment reader.
- If the watch asks you to unlock it, do so and try again.
Google described the card opt-in in Wallet on Wear settings; there is no single phone-app menu path that can safely be assumed for every version. A transit pass may work without opening Wallet only if that specific pass and system are supported.
Other changes in the June update
The update also introduced Surface Specific Favorites for Google Home controls, so you can configure home-control favorites separately for each watch. It included the June 5, 2025 security patch as well. Google’s June 2025 Pixel Watch Security Bulletin documents security fixes; the release was not a new major Wear OS generation.
Rank #4
- Google Pixel Watch has a beautiful circular, domed design and new experience with Wear OS by Google, so it’s easy to get help at a glance
- Stay on top of activity, calories burned, and more with Fitbit activity tracking
- Track your heart rate and get insight into your sleep
- Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
- Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist
If a payment or update does not work
- “Up to date” or no update offered: The phased rollout may not have reached your device or carrier yet. Check again later under Settings → System → System updates.
- The reader does nothing: Confirm the watch is unlocked, the reader accepts contactless payment, and the card or pass is configured and supported. Position the watch face close to the reader.
- Wallet asks you to unlock: That is expected security behavior. The feature avoids opening Wallet first; it does not remove the watch’s lock requirement.
- Your card is rejected: Check the issuing bank and card eligibility. Reinstalling the watch update will not make an unsupported card eligible.
- Your transit card works elsewhere but not here: Transit support is agency- and fare-system-specific. Confirm the exact service and payment method with the agency.
App and service versions can also matter: installing watch firmware does not by itself guarantee that every Wallet, bank, or transit configuration is compatible.
Should you install it or upgrade your watch?
If you own a Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2, or Pixel Watch 3 and have not installed this release, installing the supported system update brings the security fixes and the Wallet-closed convenience where your card and transit system qualify. It is not a reason by itself to buy a newer watch: all three generations were included in Google’s June 2025 rollout.
