If your Apple Watch is not recording activity, first identify what is missing: Activity rings, steps or distance, a workout, heart-rate readings, or data in the iPhone’s Fitness or Health app. Then check the watch’s fit and Wrist Detection, verify Fitness Tracking and Health permissions, enable location calibration, restart and update both devices, and run a controlled workout test. If the watch still records nothing—or heart-rate readings are also consistently absent—it may need Apple diagnostics or service.

Apple Watch estimates activity using motion, heart-rate, personal information, and, for some measurements, GPS. A missing Exercise minute or Stand credit is not automatically a hardware fault.

First, identify what is missing

  • Move ring: Active-calorie estimation may be affected by permissions, fit, personal data, calibration, or unrecognized movement.
  • Exercise ring: The activity may not meet Apple’s intensity criteria, or heart-rate and motion data may be unavailable.
  • Stand ring: You must stand and move for at least one minute during an hour; simply being upright may not qualify.
  • Steps or distance: Check motion permissions, calibration, Health permissions, and data sources.
  • Missing workout: The Workout app may not have been started, may have been paused or ended incorrectly, or may have encountered a battery or software problem.
  • Missing heart rate: Check Wrist Detection, Heart Rate permission, fit, cleanliness, tattoos, and sensor contact separately.
  • Watch records locally but iPhone does not: Treat this as a synchronization or Health-source problem.
  • Only one third-party app fails: Review that app’s Health access and recording settings.

Apple’s Activity app tracks Move, Exercise, and Stand rings, while activity history is also available through the iPhone’s Fitness and Health apps. The rings are not identical to a manually started Workout session. Apple’s Activity guide explains the distinction.

Do this 60-second check first

Improve the fit and clean the sensors

Wear the watch snugly but comfortably, above the wrist bone toward the elbow, with its back touching your skin. Clean and dry both your skin and the watch, especially after sweat, lotion, or water exposure. Tighten the band slightly during exercise if necessary, then loosen it afterward. A loose band or poor contact can reduce the reliability of heart-rate and related calorie estimates. Apple’s fit guidance recommends consistent skin contact above the wrist bone.

Check Wrist Detection

On the watch, open Settings → Passcode → Wrist Detection and make sure it is enabled. Apple says turning Wrist Detection off makes some Activity measurements unavailable and disables heart-rate tracking and notifications. See Apple’s Wrist Detection documentation.

Check the basic state of the watch

  • Make sure the watch is not locked because it has stopped detecting your wrist.
  • Check that the battery is not critically low.
  • Confirm the watch is being worn on the wrist selected under Settings → General → Orientation.
  • Check whether a workout is paused rather than stopped.
  • If Low Power Mode, Theater Mode, or Water Lock is enabled, return to normal use for testing. Power-saving behavior varies by model, workout type, and watchOS version, so do not assume every mode disables all activity tracking.

Turn on fitness, motion, Health, and heart-rate access

Verify Fitness Tracking

  1. Open the Health app on the iPhone.
  2. Tap your profile picture.
  3. Tap Devices, then select your Apple Watch.
  4. Confirm Fitness Tracking is enabled.

On current iOS versions, also inspect Health → profile picture → Apps. Review the Apple Watch and any workout apps, and enable only the categories you want them to record or read, such as Steps, Walking + Running Distance, Active Energy, Workouts, and Heart Rate.

Review iPhone privacy permissions

Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Motion & Fitness and confirm the relevant access. Also check Settings → Privacy & Security → Health. Apple notes that apps can use only the Health categories for which you have granted permission. Review Apple’s Health permissions and data-source guidance and its privacy and Location Services guidance. Menu wording can differ on older iOS or watchOS releases and by region.

Check Heart Rate separately

On the watch, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Heart Rate and turn on Heart Rate. Alternatively, use Watch app → My Watch → Privacy → Heart Rate.

Missing or poor readings can result from a loose fit, wet or dirty skin, tattoos beneath the sensor, cold skin, reduced blood flow, excessive movement, or incorrect placement. Apple cautions that reliable readings are not guaranteed for every person in every condition. The watch is not a medical diagnostic device; seek medical advice for health concerns. Apple’s heart-rate guide provides further detail.

Check Location Services and calibration

For outdoor pace, distance, and calibration, open the iPhone’s Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services. Confirm Location Services is on, then open System Services and enable Motion Calibration & Distance.

Location Services is especially relevant to outdoor GPS measurements and calibration; it does not explain every missing indoor step or activity record. Apple says calibration can improve distance, pace, calorie, Move, and Exercise estimates when GPS is limited or unavailable. See Apple’s current calibration instructions.

Reset and repeat fitness calibration

  1. Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
  2. Tap My Watch → Privacy → Reset Fitness Calibration Data.
  3. Go outdoors to a flat, open area with clear skies.
  4. Open Workout on the watch and choose Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run.
  5. Walk or run at a normal pace for approximately 20 minutes.

The 20 minutes can be accumulated across multiple outdoor Workout sessions. If you exercise at substantially different speeds, calibrating at each speed may help. Resetting calibration is not the same as erasing Activity history; it resets learned calibration information so the watch can relearn future estimates. It cannot recreate activity that was never recorded.

Verify your personal information

In the iPhone Watch app, open My Watch → Health → Health Details → Edit. Check your height, weight, age or date of birth, sex where applicable, and wheelchair status. Incorrect information may not stop recording, but it can make calorie and distance estimates appear wrong. Correcting it primarily affects future calculations and does not necessarily repair historical gaps. Apple explains how personal details affect activity calculations.

Run a controlled workout test

  1. Wear the watch correctly and unlock it.
  2. Open Workout.
  3. Choose Outdoor Walk.
  4. Walk normally for 10–20 minutes.
  5. End and save the workout.
  6. Check the watch’s workout history, Activity rings, and the iPhone Fitness app.

For indoor movement, choose the appropriate indoor workout type. For an activity without a specific category, use Other. Automatic workout reminders are available for some common activities, but they are not continuous, guaranteed workout recording. Start a workout manually when session-specific data matters. Apple documents automatic workout reminders.

The result narrows the diagnosis:

  • Workout records normally: The sensor is probably functioning; investigate ring rules, calibration, activity type, or synchronization.
  • Workout records on the watch but not the iPhone: Check Health sources, app access, pairing, and synchronization.
  • No workout, steps, or heart rate records: Recheck Wrist Detection, fit, permissions, and software; hardware service becomes more likely if the failure persists.

Why Activity credit may look wrong

Apple defines the rings as follows:

  • Move: Active calories.
  • Exercise: Minutes of activity meeting Apple’s exercise criteria.
  • Stand: Hours in which you stood and moved for at least one minute.

A slow walk may add little or no Exercise credit. Strength training does not guarantee one Exercise minute for every elapsed minute. Standing without moving may not earn Stand credit. Moving the arms while seated may not generate substantial active-calorie credit.

Everyday estimates can also be lower when the watch arm is immobilized, such as while pushing a stroller or shopping cart, carrying a heavy object, or using a mobility aid. Cycling and swimming depend on the selected workout and available motion, heart-rate, and GPS information rather than ordinary step counting. Wheelchair users should verify wheelchair status; Apple changes the blue Stand ring to a Roll ring when configured. See Apple’s ring definitions and activity guidance.

If the watch records but Fitness or Health does not

  1. Open the Health app.
  2. Select the affected category, such as Steps, Active Energy, Workouts, or Walking + Running Distance.
  3. Open Data Sources & Access.
  4. Confirm the Apple Watch appears as a source.
  5. Review source priority if multiple watches, iPhones, or apps contribute data.

An old watch may remain listed, a third-party app may be writing incomplete data, or the watch may be paired with a different iPhone. You may also be looking in Fitness history when the record was written to a Health category. Do not delete Health data casually; deletion can be irreversible and may remove useful history. Apple explains Health data sources and priority.

Restart and update both devices

Restart the Apple Watch and its paired iPhone. Then check:

  • iPhone: Settings → General → Software Update
  • Watch: Watch app → My Watch → General → Software Update

Menu names and update requirements vary by iOS and watchOS version. The watch may need to be near the iPhone, charged, connected to Wi-Fi, and sufficiently charged before updating. Apple’s support guide includes restart and update help.

When to unpair—or contact Apple

Unpairing is a later troubleshooting step, not a routine fix for one incorrect day. Consider it only after checking fit, permissions, calibration, data sources, restarting, updating, and completing the controlled workout test. Before unpairing, ensure the watch has recently backed up through the iPhone, know your Apple Account credentials, and expect to reconfigure cards, apps, notifications, and preferences.

Contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if:

  • The watch records no activity after a controlled test.
  • Heart-rate readings are absent in both the Heart Rate app and workouts.
  • Wrist Detection repeatedly fails despite correct fit and clean sensors.
  • The back sensor does not illuminate or behaves abnormally.
  • The watch suffered impact or liquid exposure.
  • Tracking still fails after a clean re-pair.
  • The watch cannot update, restart, or remain powered on.

Service eligibility and cost depend on the model, damage, warranty or AppleCare status, country, and region. Do not replace the watch until a hardware problem is established. A better-fitting band may help sensor contact, but it cannot fix disabled permissions, software faults, or a faulty sensor.
