Apple released watchOS 11 developer beta 5 on August 5, 2024. A report at the time grouped four notable improvements: pausing Activity ring streaks, setting different ring goals by weekday, customizing the iPhone Fitness app’s Summary tab, and using Vitals and Training Load for health and workout context. These were watchOS 11 features—not necessarily four changes introduced for the first time in beta 5. Apple released watchOS 11 publicly on September 16, 2024, so beta 5 is now a historical milestone, not a current update.
The August 5, 2024 report described beta 5 as a developer release and highlighted four useful areas of change. Apple’s own watchOS 11 announcement and final-release announcement explain these as features of watchOS 11 overall. The distinction matters: the four-item grouping is a summary of what readers could look forward to in the update, not an official Apple list of features newly added in beta 5.
The four improvements in brief
- Pause Activity rings: Take a break without the pause counting against an Activity award streak.
- Schedule different ring goals: Set goals to suit different days of the week.
- Personalize Fitness Summary: Choose which cards and metrics appear in the iPhone Fitness app’s Summary tab.
- Get more context about health and workouts: Vitals highlights overnight measurements outside a personal range; Training Load compares recent workout strain with a longer-term baseline.
1. Pause Activity rings without breaking a streak
watchOS 11 lets users pause their Activity rings for a day, a week, a month, or longer. That can help when illness, injury, travel, or a planned rest period makes a daily target unrealistic. The point is to let someone take a break without having that pause count against an Activity award streak.

Apple’s announcement confirms the streak protection, but does not establish whether a pause can be applied retroactively. Don’t assume it can cover a day that has already passed.

2. Set ring goals by day of the week
Instead of using one target every day, users can customize Activity goals for different weekdays. For example, someone might set a higher Move goal for Saturday and a lower target for a recovery day, or adjust Exercise and Stand expectations around a work schedule.
This is manual goal-setting, not an automatically generated training plan. The feature makes the rings more adaptable to a routine; it does not decide how hard a person should train or adjust goals in response to workout data.

3. Customize the Fitness app’s Summary tab
The Fitness app on iPhone can show a more personally relevant selection of information in its Summary tab. Apple cited workout-related content such as running, hiking, swimming, and mindfulness, along with friends’ activity. This can make the tab a more useful overview instead of a fixed collection of cards.

4. Vitals and Training Load add different kinds of context
Vitals and Training Load both help put measurements in context, but they are separate features: one focuses on overnight health metrics, while the other looks at workout strain over time.
| Feature | What it looks at | What it can help with |
|---|---|---|
| Vitals | Key overnight measurements compared with the user’s typical range | Noticing unusual patterns in sleep and health metrics |
| Training Load | Recent workout effort compared with a longer-term baseline | Considering how training volume or intensity is changing |
Vitals: overnight metrics against a personal baseline
Vitals can surface heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, sleep duration, and blood oxygen where supported and available. If two or more metrics are outside a user’s typical range, watchOS can send a notification and offer possible contextual factors, such as elevation changes, alcohol consumption, or illness.

Those flags are not a diagnosis, and suggested contributing factors are not proof of cause. Because Vitals uses a personal baseline, the same measurement can have a different meaning for different users. Blood-oxygen availability and functionality also vary by Apple Watch model, region, and regulatory restrictions.

Training Load: recent workouts versus a 28-day baseline
Training Load compares the most recent seven days of workout load with a 28-day baseline. Apple describes five possible comparisons: Well below, Below, Steady, Above, and Well above. Workout effort uses a 1-to-10 scale. Some cardio workouts can receive an automatic effort estimate, while users can adjust ratings; some workout types, including strength training, may require manual input.

The comparison is an estimate to inform training decisions, not a clinical measurement or a guarantee against overtraining or injury. A short or incomplete history may make a 28-day comparison less useful, and manually adjusted effort ratings are subjective.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who could use watchOS 11?
At its announcement, Apple said watchOS 11 would support Apple Watch Series 6 or later when paired with an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18. That is the compatibility requirement Apple announced for the release; availability of individual measurements or functions can still vary by model and region. See Apple’s watchOS 11 announcement for the original requirements.
Should you have installed the beta?
Developer betas are primarily for people testing apps and software compatibility. They can also suit enthusiasts who accept instability and want early access to test features. Beta software can introduce bugs, battery drain, app incompatibilities, or sensor behavior that differs from the eventual release; features may change before launch.

For most people—especially anyone who depends on their watch for sleep tracking, workouts, health-related functions, or reliable daily use—the sensible choice in August 2024 was to wait for the public release. The convenience of these changes was unlikely to outweigh beta risk for someone who did not need to test watchOS. If considering any developer beta, use Apple’s official developer enrollment process and the current instructions for the account; the cited report does not establish a specific build number or a verified installation path for beta 5.
What happened after beta 5?
Apple released watchOS 11 publicly on September 16, 2024. The features discussed here belonged to that broader release. Beta 5 is therefore best understood as part of the 2024 rollout, not software that is newly available today.
