watchOS 11.4, released on April 1, 2025, is a small feature-and-reliability update rather than a major Apple Watch redesign. Its three notable changes are Matter-compatible robot-vacuum control in Apple Home, a Sleep Wake Up alarm option that can sound through Silent Mode, and a fix for unresponsive watch-face selection.
It supports Apple Watch Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), and all Apple Watch Ultra models when paired with an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18 or later.
watchOS 11.4 at a glance
| Change | What it does | Main requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Matter robot-vacuum control | Controls compatible vacuums through the Home app, scenes, automations and Siri | A Matter-compatible vacuum configured in Apple Home |
| Break Through Silent Mode | Lets a selected Sleep Wake Up alarm play sound despite Silent Mode | Enable the option for the individual alarm |
| Watch-face selection fix | Addresses an issue that could make face selection unresponsive | No special setup |
1. Matter robot vacuums can be controlled from Apple Watch
watchOS 11.4 expands the Apple Watch’s role as an Apple Home controller. A Matter-compatible robot vacuum can be controlled from the Home app on the watch and included in Home scenes and automations. You can also use Siri—for example, to ask it to clean a room.

The vacuum must support Matter and be added to the user’s Apple Home setup. A model that works only through its manufacturer’s app will not automatically appear in the watch’s Home controls.

What you need
- A robot vacuum with Matter support.
- The vacuum added to Apple Home, not merely connected to its vendor app.
- An Apple Watch paired with the relevant iPhone and signed into the correct Home environment.
- Useful room and accessory names for reliable Siri commands.
Once configured, practical uses include starting or stopping cleaning, adding the vacuum to a “Leaving Home” or “Goodnight” scene, and triggering cleaning through an automation. Features and Siri behavior can vary by region, language, household permissions and vendor implementation.
If the vacuum does not appear
Check that the device is genuinely Matter-compatible, online and added to Apple Home. Also confirm that you have permission to control the home and that scenes or automations do not reference an old room or accessory name. Ambiguous names can cause Siri to misunderstand a command.

2. Sleep Wake Up alarms can break through Silent Mode
The most broadly useful change is the new Break Through Silent Mode option for a Sleep Wake Up alarm. When enabled, that particular alarm can play an audible sound while the Apple Watch is being worn and Silent Mode is on.
This is useful if you normally prefer haptic alerts but occasionally need a louder, harder-to-miss wake-up alarm. It can be less suitable for people who share a bedroom or require a completely silent alarm.
How to enable it
- Open the Alarms app on Apple Watch.
- Tap the relevant Sleep Wake Up alarm.
- Turn on Break Through Silent Mode.
The setting applies to the selected alarm; it is not a global Silent Mode override. Other notifications and alarms do not automatically become audible. If you want a silent wake-up, leave the option off and continue using Silent Mode with haptic alerts. Apple documents the behavior in its Apple Watch user guide.

3. Watch-face switching is more reliable
Apple fixed an issue that could make watch-face selection unresponsive while switching between faces. This is a reliability improvement, not a new watch-face system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsApple’s public watchOS 11.4 summary does not list new watch faces. If you were expecting a new gallery or redesigned watch-face experience, this update does not deliver one.
What watchOS 11.4 did not add
Several major Apple Watch features commonly associated with watchOS 11 arrived in the original watchOS 11.0 release, not 11.4. These include Vitals, Training Load, sleep-apnea notifications, Tides and Smart Stack improvements.

watchOS 11.4 does not introduce a major interface overhaul, a new workout system, a new health platform or a headline Apple Intelligence feature. Apple’s consumer release summary focuses on the three changes above. The developer release notes mainly cover SDK and API information; the watchOS 11.4 SDK shipped with Xcode 16.3.

watchOS 11.4 supports:
- Apple Watch Series 6
- Apple Watch Series 7
- Apple Watch Series 8
- Apple Watch Series 9
- Apple Watch Series 10
- Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)
- Apple Watch Ultra
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
The paired iPhone also matters. Apple’s watchOS 11 compatibility requirement is an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18 or later. A supported watch paired with an older, incompatible iPhone cannot complete the normal upgrade.

How to install watchOS 11.4

- Keep the watch near the paired iPhone and connected to Wi-Fi.
- On the iPhone, open the Watch app.
- Tap My Watch, then General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Download and install the update.
- Leave the watch on its charger until installation is complete.
Updates can take time and require sufficient battery charge. Do not remove the watch from its charger during installation.
If the update does not appear
- Confirm that the watch model is supported.
- Update the paired iPhone to iOS 18 or later.
- Restart both the iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Make sure the watch is charging and close to the iPhone.
- Reopen Watch > My Watch > General > Software Update.
Is watchOS 11.4 worth installing?
Yes, if you have compatible hardware. The update is particularly worthwhile if you use Apple Home with a Matter robot vacuum, want a Sleep Wake Up alarm that can make sound through Silent Mode, or have experienced problems switching watch faces. The usual bug-fix and maintenance benefits are also reasonable grounds to install a point release.
Keep expectations modest. The robot-vacuum feature has limited value without a Matter-compatible accessory, and the update will not make unsupported watches compatible. If your Apple Watch is already running a later watchOS branch, there is no reason to downgrade to watchOS 11.4 for these features.

As of August 2026, watchOS 11.4 is an older release in the watchOS 11 cycle, not Apple’s current-generation watch operating system. It is best understood as a historical point update for owners who remain on that branch.
The bottom line on watchOS 11.4
watchOS 11.4 is a narrow but useful update. The alarm option is the most broadly relevant addition, Matter robot-vacuum control is convenient for compatible Apple Home households, and the watch-face fix improves everyday reliability. It is worth installing on supported hardware, but it should not be mistaken for a major new version of watchOS.
