One thing is certain: watchOS 27 is coming this fall. Two new watches—the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4—are expected, but Apple has not announced either one. A fourth possibility, the SE 4, is less certain. If you need a watch now, buy for what you need today; if you can wait, Apple’s fall announcement should make the hardware choices clearer.
watchOS 27 is the confirmed arrival
Apple previewed watchOS 27 on June 8, 2026, at WWDC. A public release is expected in fall 2026, but Apple has not given a final release date in its announcement. The software is the only item among the likely near-term changes that Apple has officially confirmed. Apple’s announcement outlines its next-generation software and Apple Intelligence plans.
The update brings Apple Intelligence-related capabilities to Watch, including smart replies and Workout Buddy improvements. Apple’s developer guide also describes Foundation Models work for features such as glanceable summaries, workout feedback, smart replies and image understanding, with Private Cloud Compute among the technologies involved. Apple’s watchOS 27 developer guide provides the technical overview.

Compatibility depends on the feature
For the Apple Intelligence-related capabilities Apple has described, the supported-watch threshold is Series 9 or later, Ultra 2 or later, or SE 3, paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. Some Workout Buddy features also require Bluetooth headphones or speakers, and supported language settings. Apple notes that requirements vary by feature; owning a compatible Watch alone does not guarantee access to every capability. #1 Best Overall
- GET SMARTER HEALTH INSIGHTS—Apple Watch SE 3 is an advanced health tracker that helps you better understand your body. The smartwatch sends alerts for an irregular heart rhythm, or an unusually high or low heart rate.* You can view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app,* track your sleep score, and get sleep apnea notifications.*
- A GREAT FITNESS TRACKER—SE 3 can track your workouts in a healthy number of ways—from running and strength training to simply achieving your 10K steps a day. With real-time metrics and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone,* you’ll hit your goals like never before.
- KEEP HELP CLOSE AT HAND—SE 3 is a smartwatch that can detect a hard fall or severe car crash and automatically help connect you to emergency services and notify your emergency contacts.* Check In can automatically notify a loved one when you’ve arrived at your destination.
- WOMEN’S HEALTH INSIGHTS—SE 3 has advanced sensors that track your wrist temperature while you sleep. With this smartwatch, you can log your periods and symptoms, get period predictions, and get notified of cycle deviations.*
- GREAT BATTERY LIFE AND FASTER CHARGING—Enjoy a smartwatch with all-day, 18-hour battery life* from sunup to sundown. Then charge up to twice as fast as SE 2* and get up to 8 hours of battery in just 15 minutes.*
The practical appeal is likely to be quick replies, workout guidance and glanceable information—not replacing the iPhone with an independent AI device. Your iPhone model, software, language and region can affect availability, and some experiences depend on connected audio devices. Since watchOS 27 is expected to bring new software to supported existing watches, the update by itself is not a reason for every owner to buy new hardware.
Apple Watch Series 12 is the strongest hardware bet
Apple is expected to announce a Series 12 during its usual September product cycle, but there is no official announcement, date, specification or price. Recent reporting points to an evolutionary update rather than a confirmed dramatic redesign. A faster chip, efficiency improvements or health-related additions are plausible, not established. 9to5Mac’s July 2026 report and Macworld’s Series 12 coverage discuss expectations, not Apple-confirmed specifications.

There is no verified basis to buy now on the assumption that Series 12 will have blood-glucose monitoring, blood-pressure measurement, a particular new display, or a specific chip. Nor is a major case redesign confirmed. Series 11 already offers a broad mainstream feature set, including ECG, hypertension notifications, sleep tracking and sleep-apnea notifications, so owners should wait for actual specifications if they need a concrete reason to upgrade.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 is possible, but less certain
Reports point to an Ultra refresh in 2026, potentially in the same fall window as Series 12. Apple has not confirmed the Ultra 4. A newer processor or health features are plausible; a redesigned enclosure, substantially longer battery life, expanded satellite functions or a new sensor package have not been verified.

The current Ultra 3 is already aimed at people who use its rugged construction and outdoor tools: Apple lists a 49mm titanium case, dual-frequency GPS, satellite connectivity, 100-meter water resistance, a depth gauge to 40 meters, and up to 42 hours of battery life—or up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode. Those figures are Apple’s stated specifications, not a guarantee of runtime for every use pattern. See Apple’s Ultra product comparison for details.
If you need those capabilities for hiking, diving or endurance activities now, Ultra 3 remains a current option. If you are considering it mainly for notifications, sleep tracking, casual exercise or Apple Pay, its size and price premium may not be worthwhile. Outdoor buyers should compare their actual battery, GPS, water-activity and connectivity needs rather than counting on unannounced Ultra 4 improvements.

SE 4 remains an open question
Apple released the SE 3 in 2025. Earlier expectations anticipated an SE 4 in 2026, but more recent reporting says Apple may skip a refresh this year. That is a conflicting rumor picture, not confirmation that the model is canceled or launching. Macworld’s later report explains why an SE 4 should not be counted among the most likely near-term announcements.
The SE 3 is the known lower-cost choice for basic fitness, notifications and safety features. Apple’s U.S. buying page lists it from $249 for GPS and $299 for GPS + Cellular; prices vary by configuration and region. It does not include the full health-sensor set found on higher-end models. If you need an affordable Watch now, do not delay solely for an unconfirmed SE 4.

Buy now or wait?
| Your situation | Practical choice |
|---|---|
| You need a Watch before fall | Choose the current model that meets your needs; a new announcement is not guaranteed to suit your budget or requirements. |
| You own Series 8 or older and can wait | Wait for the fall announcement, then compare actual Series 12 specifications and prices with discounted current models. |
| You own Series 9, 10 or 11 | Usually wait unless you need a specific hardware change. Check which watchOS 27 features your model and paired iPhone support. |
| You own Ultra 2 or Ultra 3 | Wait if your current battery and outdoor tools are sufficient; consider a new model only after its actual changes are known. |
| You want long battery life and outdoor features now | Compare Ultra 3’s published specifications with your needs. Reassess if Apple announces an Ultra 4 before you buy. |
| You want the least expensive current option | SE 3 is the confirmed entry point; do not count on an SE 4 appearing this year. |
| You mainly want Apple Intelligence | First check paired-iPhone, feature, language and accessory requirements. watchOS 27 may bring useful capabilities to eligible watches you already own. |
Waiting is a way to reduce uncertainty, not a guarantee of a better deal. Current models may be discounted or become harder to find, trade-in values can change, and new watches may offer only modest improvements. Buying now makes sense when the watch solves a present need and the current model fits it; waiting makes sense when you can tolerate uncertainty and want to compare confirmed hardware.
What Apple has not confirmed
- A Series 12 or Ultra 4 announcement, release date, specifications or price.
- An SE 4 launch in 2026.
- Blood-glucose monitoring, blood-pressure measurement, Touch ID or a radical case redesign for the next Watches.
- Specific battery-life gains, new satellite capabilities or a particular new sensor package for Ultra 4.
- That every watchOS 27 feature will work on every Watch that can install the update.
For current U.S. reference prices, Apple lists Series 11 from $399, SE 3 from $249 and Ultra 3 from $799; configurations, taxes and regional prices vary. Apple’s U.S. Watch store has the current lineup. The Series 11, Ultra 3 and SE 3 require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later according to Apple’s current lineup information. Apple Watch works with iPhone, not Android. Cellular service requires a carrier plan, and Family Setup has additional cellular, account and carrier requirements; see Apple’s SE buying page for applicable conditions.
