For most iPhone owners, gift the Apple Watch Series 11. Choose the Apple Watch SE 3 to spend less or buy for a first-time user; choose the Ultra 3 for someone who will use its longer battery life, rugged build, advanced GPS, or diving features. Before ordering, check the recipient’s iPhone: all three current models require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later.
The prices below are Apple’s US starting prices as of August 18, 2026, before tax. Retailer discounts and availability can change.

Apple Watch Series 11: the safest choice for most people
The Series 11 is the default recommendation for an adult who wants an everyday watch for notifications, workouts, health tracking, and communication. It is available in 42mm and 46mm sizes, with aluminum or titanium cases. Apple’s US starting prices are $399 for GPS and $499 for GPS + Cellular.
#1 Best Overall
- A FULL-FEATURED HEALTH TRACKER—Apple Watch Series 11 gives you invaluable insights about your body, right from your wrist. Take an ECG anytime* and get alerts for a high and low heart rate or an irregular rhythm*—so you can stay closer to your heart. You can also view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app* and be notified of possible sleep apnea.*
- KNOW YOUR SLEEP SCORE—With advanced sleep tracking, Series 11 gives you a daily sleep score. It’s an easy way to help measure and understand the quality of your sleep, so you can make it more restorative.
- GET HYPERTENSION NOTIFICATIONS—Did you know that Series 11 can spot signs of chronic high blood pressure? By analyzing how your blood vessels respond to beats of the heart, it can notify you of possible hypertension.*
- SAFETY FEATURES—A smartwatch that puts your safety first. Series 11 can detect a hard fall or severe car crash, automatically help connect you with emergency services, and notify your emergency contacts.* Check In can automatically notify a loved one when you’ve arrived at your destination.
- A POWERFUL FITNESS TRACKER—With advanced metrics and motivating features like Pacer, Heart Rate Zones, training load, and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone*—Series 11 is made to help everyone stay active, from runners and hikers to strength-training enthusiasts.
It has an always-on display rated up to 2,000 nits peak brightness and includes premium health features such as ECG and hypertension notifications, alongside sleep tracking, sleep-apnea notifications, sleep score, vitals, heart-rate notifications, temperature sensing, and cycle tracking. Feature availability can depend on location, age, and other eligibility conditions; consult Apple’s model comparison and applicable feature notes.
Apple estimates up to 24 hours of normal-use battery life or up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode. Those are estimates, not guarantees: actual results vary with settings, cellular use, signal strength, workouts, and other factors. If the recipient plans to wear a watch overnight, charging habits matter as much as the health-feature list.
Do not choose Series 11 if the recipient mainly wants the least expensive Apple Watch, or if they regularly spend long stretches away from a charger and will benefit from Ultra 3’s battery. It is also not automatically the right fit for someone who dislikes wearing a watch or prefers a very small, discreet design.

The SE 3 is the sensible pick when price matters most, for a first Apple Watch, or for someone who mainly wants activity tracking, workouts, notifications, Apple Pay, timers, music controls, and core safety features. It comes in 40mm and 44mm aluminum cases. Apple’s US starting prices are $249 for GPS and $299 for GPS + Cellular.

SE 3 is not simply a stripped-down notification screen: Apple lists heart-rate monitoring and notifications, Fall Detection, Crash Detection, temperature sensing, cycle tracking, and sleep-related features including sleep-apnea notifications. Its main compromises versus Series 11 are the absence of ECG and hypertension notifications, a less bright display, aluminum-only construction, and fewer premium outdoor capabilities. Its battery estimate is up to 24 hours of normal use and up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode.
For a child without an iPhone, consider an SE 3 GPS + Cellular, but check the setup details first. Apple Watch For Your Kids requires GPS + Cellular, and Family Sharing, carrier support, age, and regional requirements can affect whether the arrangement works. Cellular also requires a compatible carrier plan and may add recurring charges.
Apple Watch Ultra 3: a specialist gift, not an automatic upgrade
Ultra 3 is for someone who will make use of its hardware: a trail runner, backpacker, diver, frequent outdoor traveler, or person who wants longer time between charges. It has a 49mm Grade 5 titanium case, a display rated up to 3,000 nits, precision dual-frequency GPS, a customizable Action button, and a siren. Apple lists water resistance to 100 meters, support for scuba and high-speed water sports, and a depth gauge rated to 40 meters. Its US starting price is $799.
Apple estimates up to 42 hours of normal use and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode. That is the meaningful battery advantage in the current lineup for someone who wants to wear a watch overnight and does not want a daily charging routine. Ultra 3 also has cellular and satellite emergency capabilities; satellite SOS availability and operation depend on location, connectivity, and emergency-service infrastructure, so it should not be treated as guaranteed rescue.
Rank #3
- GET SMARTER HEALTH INSIGHTS—Apple Watch SE 3 is an advanced health tracker that helps you better understand your body. The smartwatch sends alerts for an irregular heart rhythm, or an unusually high or low heart rate.* You can view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app,* track your sleep score, and get sleep apnea notifications.*
- A GREAT FITNESS TRACKER—SE 3 can track your workouts in a healthy number of ways—from running and strength training to simply achieving your 10K steps a day. With real-time metrics and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone,* you’ll hit your goals like never before.
- KEEP HELP CLOSE AT HAND—SE 3 is a smartwatch that can detect a hard fall or severe car crash and automatically help connect you to emergency services and notify your emergency contacts.* Check In can automatically notify a loved one when you’ve arrived at your destination.
- WOMEN’S HEALTH INSIGHTS—SE 3 has advanced sensors that track your wrist temperature while you sleep. With this smartwatch, you can log your periods and symptoms, get period predictions, and get notified of cycle deviations.*
- GREAT BATTERY LIFE AND FASTER CHARGING—Enjoy a smartwatch with all-day, 18-hour battery life* from sunup to sundown. Then charge up to twice as fast as SE 2* and get up to 8 hours of battery in just 15 minutes.*
The trade-off is physical as well as financial: 49mm is large, and the watch is more substantial than Series 11 or SE 3. Skip Ultra 3 for a small-wristed recipient, someone who likes jewelry-like or lightweight watches, or a casual user who will not use its outdoor, diving, GPS, or battery advantages. Series 11 and Ultra 3 share the S10 chip and many health features, so Ultra’s premium is chiefly for its hardware, endurance, and outdoor capabilities—not a wholly different everyday watchOS experience.
GPS or GPS + Cellular?
GPS is enough for many people who usually have their iPhone nearby. GPS + Cellular lets the watch use a compatible carrier plan to call, message, stream, and access data away from the iPhone. It costs more upfront and generally requires an additional recurring plan charge; carrier support and activation vary.
| Choose GPS if… | Consider GPS + Cellular if… |
|---|---|
| The recipient usually carries their iPhone, wants to keep the purchase price down, or does not need independent connectivity. | They run without a phone, a child uses Apple Watch For Your Kids, or they often move independently and want calls or messages without carrying the iPhone. |
Before paying for cellular, confirm the recipient’s carrier supports Apple Watch and that the intended account and region can activate it. Cellular hardware alone does not include service.
Check compatibility before you buy
- Phone model: Current Series 11, SE 3, and Ultra 3 require iPhone 11 or later.
- Software: The iPhone must run iOS 26 or later.
- Android users: Apple Watch is not a suitable gift for someone using only an Android phone; an iPhone is required for pairing.
- Child setup: Verify Family Sharing, cellular carrier, age, and regional requirements if setting up the watch without the child’s own iPhone.
- Cellular plan: Confirm carrier support and recurring cost if the watch should work independently from the iPhone.
To avoid spoiling a surprise, ask which iPhone model they use or check discreetly with someone in their household. A discounted watch that cannot pair is no bargain.

Choose the case size and band for the person
For a smaller wrist or a preference for a lighter, less conspicuous watch, start with the 40mm SE 3 or 42mm Series 11. For a larger wrist, easier reading, or a more substantial look, consider 44mm SE 3 or 46mm Series 11. Ultra 3’s 49mm case is best reserved for someone who already likes large watches or needs its specific features. Case size affects fit, weight, and display area, not the watch’s core software capabilities.
Band comfort can determine whether the gift gets worn. A Sport Band is a straightforward general-use choice; a Sport Loop may suit someone prioritizing a soft, adjustable feel or overnight wear. For water and outdoor use, look at bands designed for those activities and confirm they fit the selected case. If you are unsure of wrist size or taste, a returnable configuration or a gift card for the band can prevent a poor fit.
Health features are useful, but not a diagnosis
Series 11 and Ultra 3 offer the broader health set, including ECG and hypertension notifications; SE 3 omits those, while retaining heart-rate features and several safety and sleep-related functions. Apple’s notifications and measurements are not a medical diagnosis, do not replace professional medical care, and may not be available or appropriate for every person or region. Do not buy a watch on the assumption that it will identify or prevent a disease.
Apple’s comparison and product pages are the best place to check current feature availability and eligibility for the recipient’s country and circumstances: compare Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3.

Are discounted older Apple Watches worth buying?
A Series 10, Ultra 2, Series 9, or SE 2 may be worthwhile if the price is meaningfully lower and the recipient’s needs are met. Do not buy old stock just because it is discounted: check the exact model’s compatibility with the recipient’s iPhone, software-support status in Apple’s current documentation, and the seller’s return terms.
For refurbished or open-box watches, ask about battery condition, warranty, and water-exposure history; confirm Activation Lock is removed and the watch can be paired. Check cellular compatibility if applicable. Avoid relying on predictions about how many years of updates any model will receive.
Bottom line by recipient
Buy Series 11 for most people. It is the balanced everyday gift with a choice of sizes and Apple’s richer mainstream health feature set. Choose SE 3 to save money or for a first-time user; choose Ultra 3 when battery, ruggedness, navigation, diving, or satellite safety features solve a real need. Whatever you choose, verify the iPhone and carrier situation before placing the order.
