Verdict: WHOOP 4.0 can still be useful if you already own one and its sleep, strain and recovery coaching changes how you train. But it is legacy hardware: WHOOP now promotes 5.0 and MG, and the core service requires a paid membership. In the U.S., annual plans listed by WHOOP support cost $199, $239 or $359, depending on tier. For a new buyer, consider current WHOOP hardware or a different device before paying near-current membership rates for a 4.0.
What WHOOP 4.0 is—and what it is not
WHOOP 4.0 is a small, screenless wearable designed to collect data continuously and send it to the WHOOP app. It is not a conventional sports watch: there is no on-device workout screen, onboard GPS, map, music player or general-purpose app ecosystem. Its value is the membership’s interpretation of data—especially sleep, exertion and recovery—not a display full of live metrics.
WHOOP introduced the 4.0 in 2021 alongside its WHOOP Body alternative-wear system. The sensor can be worn on the wrist or, with compatible garments and accessories, elsewhere on the body. That can suit people who prefer not to wear a watch during sleep or certain sports, though fit and comfort are personal. WHOOP’s 4.0 launch announcement describes that original hardware-and-membership approach; its launch terms are historical, not a guide to today’s pricing.

The band is intended for continuous wear, including overnight. Its battery pack attaches to the device so it can be charged while worn, reducing the need to take it off just to recharge. That helps preserve data continuity, but does not prevent gaps from a depleted or aging battery, poor sensor contact, connection trouble or app issues. Battery performance on an older 4.0 will depend on its condition; do not assume it will perform like a new device.

The subscription is part of the price
WHOOP’s core experience requires an active membership. The sensor alone is not a useful substitute for the service: without membership, you lose the central app-based tracking and coaching experience. Treat the annual fee as the cost of the product, not as an optional add-on to a one-time band purchase.
WHOOP’s U.S. support documentation listed these annual prices on August 16, 2026:
| Plan | Annual U.S. price | Positioning |
|---|---|---|
| WHOOP One | $199 | Essential fitness and recovery tracking |
| WHOOP Peak | $239 | Adds features including Stress Monitor and Health Monitor |
| WHOOP Life | $359 | Includes ECG, AFib Notifications and Blood Pressure Insights, subject to availability |
At those rates, membership alone totals $398–$718 over two years and $597–$1,077 over three years, before tax or any accessory costs. These are U.S. figures, can change, and are not a standalone 4.0 device price. WHOOP says annual billing is standard and memberships auto-renew by default; monthly options may depend on location and commitment. Check the current billing and renewal terms before joining or extending. A device described as included or free is not free ownership when continued access depends on membership.
Existing members have different choices from new buyers. WHOOP’s membership-extension guidance says an extension does not automatically require a hardware change, and discusses transition options. Eligibility and economics depend on account, plan and current offers, so confirm the terms in your account rather than assuming a used band will transfer cleanly.

Sleep: the strongest reason to wear it
WHOOP’s sleep tools are designed to detect sleep automatically, account for naps and sleep debt, track consistency, and suggest a bedtime through Sleep Coach. The 4.0 also has a haptic alarm; WHOOP has described alarm options tied to a chosen time, a sleep goal or a Recovery target. Charging while wearing the battery pack can make it easier to keep the sensor on overnight without a routine charging gap.
The useful part is the pattern, not the apparent precision of each label. Sleep duration and consistency can help reveal whether late nights, travel or training schedules are affecting rest. Sleep-stage labels from a consumer wearable are estimates, not a clinical sleep study, and a tracker can register disruption without explaining its cause. A suggested bedtime may also be impractical for shift work, childcare or an irregular schedule. If scores make you anxious or push you to chase perfect sleep, the coaching may be counterproductive.
Strain and Recovery: useful context, not a verdict
WHOOP presents daily exertion as Strain, a proprietary 0–21 score. Its app describes a daily Strain Target influenced by Recovery. The intent is to put the load of a workout and the rest of the day in context, rather than simply count exercise minutes. WHOOP’s App Store listing outlines its Strain scale and Apple Health integration.
Recovery is a calculated, readiness-style score informed by signals such as sleep, heart-rate variability (HRV), resting heart rate, respiratory rate and recent history. It can be useful as a prompt to compare how you feel with your usual trends. A low score might coincide with hard training, poor sleep, alcohol, illness, stress or travel; it does not identify the cause. A green score does not guarantee that you are rested, injury-free or ready for a maximal effort. Neither Strain nor Recovery is a direct measurement of athletic readiness or a medical diagnosis.

- What You Get - A 12-month membership, WHOOP MG device, a SuperKnit Luxe band, and a waterproof* Wireless PowerPack. Choose from a range of band and accessory combinations, and add a waterproof Wireless PowerPack for on-the-go charging.
- HSA/FSA Eligible - All 12-month WHOOP memberships and battery packs qualify for HSA/FSA reimbursement.
- Screenless, Distraction-Free - No screen, no buzzing notifications. WHOOP focuses entirely on your health and performance, with up to 14+ day battery life so you can wear it around the clock.
- Heart Screener with On-Demand ECG - Take an ECG reading from your wrist in seconds to check for signs of atrial fibrillation. Heart Screener gives you a medical-grade view of your heart rhythm whenever you need it.
- 24/7 Health Insights - WHOOP monitors your heart rate every second of every day, delivering personalized Sleep, Strain, Recovery, VO2 max, Menstrual Cycle, and Heart Rate insights along with a Real-time Stress Monitor that pinpoints your stressors and shows how your body responds in the moment, so you can make better decisions about training, rest, and daily performance.
For example, if a familiar easy run feels unusually difficult and your trend data also looks out of character, easing off may be sensible. If the score is low but you feel well, do not treat the number as an order. Use it alongside symptoms, training history and your own judgment—not in place of them.
Workout tracking: good after the session, limited during it
WHOOP can record workout heart-rate data, activity and exertion; activities may be detected automatically or started and edited in the app. The platform’s emphasis is on how demanding activity was and how it fits into longer-term sleep and recovery patterns. The app also offers strength-training tools, but an optical sensor on the wrist can struggle during gripping, wrist flexion and lifting. If exact heart-rate data matters during a session, a compatible chest strap may be a better choice.
The trade-off is immediate feedback. With no display or onboard GPS, 4.0 is not the right standalone tool for live pace, distance, maps, navigation, intervals or workout controls. Runners and cyclists who need those features will likely want a GPS watch or bike computer; WHOOP may complement that equipment as a recovery tracker. Its app lists Apple Health integration, but check current compatibility and permissions for the services you use.

Comfort, fit and everyday wear
The screenless, lightweight format avoids the bulk and notifications of a smartwatch, and many users will find a fabric band unobtrusive. Others may prefer a ring or a watch, particularly for sleep. Alternative placement can help during some sports, but requires compatible WHOOP Body clothing or accessories. Check fit carefully: loose contact can undermine readings, while tight or damp fabric can irritate skin. Bands can collect sweat and need washing and drying; replacement accessories add cost and availability may vary by generation.

WHOOP has described the 4.0 as water resistant and its battery pack as waterproof in launch materials. For your specific device, check current WHOOP care guidance before swimming, showering or exposing an older unit to water. Wearability is not universal: wrist size, skin sensitivity, tattoos, sleep position and sport all affect whether a band works well for you.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How good is the data?
WHOOP gathers signals including heart rate, resting heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate, sleep timing and estimated sleep stages, as well as workout and activity data. Temperature-related information and features such as Stress Monitor depend on hardware, software and membership. Steps and other app displays may also vary with software generation and account setup. These signals are not all equally direct: Strain, Recovery, Sleep Need, Sleep Debt and sleep-stage labels are interpretations or estimates built from measurements and models.
Wrist-based optical heart-rate readings can be affected by movement, fit, cold, tattoos and skin contact. That matters especially in strength training and high-motion activities. Calorie-burn estimates are not precise enough for exact food accounting. If you need medical monitoring, do not treat a 4.0 score as a clinical result or a substitute for a clinician’s advice. Newer WHOOP MG features advertised for ECG, AFib notifications and blood-pressure insights are distinct from 4.0 and may be subject to regional availability and applicable regulatory status.
The best test of the coaching is practical: does the app help you notice patterns and make a reasonable decision? Journal prompts can help connect habits to changes over time, but correlations are not proof that one behavior caused a score shift. A dashboard can be informative without being actionable, and more data does not automatically mean better decisions. If you find yourself changing every workout to satisfy a score, step back.

WHOOP 4.0 versus 5.0 and MG
WHOOP’s current U.S. membership page promotes 5.0 with One and Peak, and MG with Life; 4.0 is no longer the standard new hardware. That makes the 4.0 a legacy option even if existing members can continue using it. Current hardware also advertises longer battery life, which makes age and battery condition particularly relevant when considering a second-hand 4.0.
Do not assume every feature in a current plan works on 4.0, or that an existing band and accessories fit a newer generation. Compare what your membership actually includes, what device it supplies, and whether your current accessories are compatible. WHOOP’s membership page shows its current lineup; support terms explain extension and transition possibilities. Features and upgrade eligibility can differ by plan and region.
WHOOP versus the alternatives
| Choose | Best fit | Why it may suit you better |
|---|---|---|
| Garmin | Runners, cyclists and outdoor athletes | GPS, live workout information and training tools in a watch, with a stronger no-mandatory-WHOOP-membership proposition. |
| Apple Watch | iPhone users wanting a smartwatch | Display, apps, GPS, notifications, payments and broad everyday utility. |
| Oura Ring | People prioritizing discreet sleep and readiness tracking | Ring form factor may be preferable for sleep; it is not a substitute for a live sports watch. |
| Fitbit | General activity and health tracking | A broad consumer-tracking option; check current device features and any Premium requirements. |
| Polar H10 or another chest strap | Workout heart-rate measurement | A focused sensor for sessions, not an all-day sleep, recovery and coaching platform. |
No single alternative wins every category. WHOOP’s case is strongest when continuous, screen-free recovery coaching matters more than GPS or smartwatch utility. A chest strap can complement a watch or app for workouts; it does not provide WHOOP’s all-day context.
Who should buy, keep or skip WHOOP 4.0?
- Keep your existing 4.0 if it is comfortable, the battery remains dependable, you use its trend and coaching tools, and the membership cost feels worthwhile. WHOOP support allows some 4.0 members to extend without automatically changing hardware.
- Consider a 4.0 only at a meaningful discount or as part of a legitimate membership offer if you specifically want the screenless form factor and understand the ongoing cost. Before buying used, verify membership transferability, device condition, charger compatibility and support eligibility; a cheap sensor is no bargain if you cannot activate the service.
- Compare 5.0 or MG first if you are joining WHOOP now. Current hardware is the lineup WHOOP promotes, but select a tier based on features you can use and availability in your country.
- Choose another category if you need GPS, pace, maps, a display, notifications or no mandatory recurring membership. Garmin suits many endurance athletes; Apple Watch suits iPhone users seeking smartwatch breadth; Oura suits discreet sleep tracking; a chest strap suits workout heart-rate needs.
WHOOP’s continuous biometric data also deserves a privacy check. Before enrolling, review the current privacy policy and terms for data collection, sharing, export and retention after cancellation, and decide whether you are comfortable with a cloud-based subscription service holding that information. Do not assume the same rules apply to every integration or region.
