WHOOP 5.0 is worth considering if you train regularly, will wear it almost around the clock, and want recovery and sleep coaching more than smartwatch features. Its smaller sensor and longer claimed battery life improve on WHOOP 4.0, but the core experience is familiar—and the membership costs $199 to $359 per year in the U.S. WHOOP Peak is the best fit for many committed users; One is the lower-cost choice, while Life and its MG hardware make sense only if you specifically want the additional health features.
WHOOP 5.0 at a glance
WHOOP is a screenless wearable paired with a membership, not a conventional watch you buy once and use independently. It tracks sleep, heart rate, HRV, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, activity and daily strain, then uses those signals and your logged habits to offer recovery insights and coaching. The emphasis is on patterns over time—not notifications, apps, music controls or a watch face.
- Best for: Regular exercisers who use recovery, sleep and training feedback to adjust their routines.
- Less suitable for: Casual users, subscription-averse buyers, or anyone whose priority is GPS, notifications, a display or step counting.
- Hardware: WHOOP 5.0 is the standard sensor; WHOOP MG is the Life-tier model with additional health features.
- U.S. annual prices cited by WHOOP: One $199, Peak $239 and Life $359. Prices, offers and feature availability may vary by region or change.
In short: Choose One for core sleep, strain and recovery tracking; Peak for Healthspan and broader monitoring; Life only for a specific reason to use MG’s ECG, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications or Blood Pressure Insights.

WHOOP One vs Peak vs Life
| Membership | Annual U.S. price | Hardware | What it adds | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One | $199 | WHOOP 5.0 | Sleep, strain, recovery, coaching, VO₂ max estimate, heart-rate zones, activity tracking and Women’s Hormonal Insights | People who want the core training and recovery system |
| Peak | $239 | WHOOP 5.0 | One features plus Health Monitor, Stress Monitor, Healthspan, WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging | Committed users who want the fuller mainstream WHOOP experience |
| Life | $359 | WHOOP MG | Peak features plus Blood Pressure Insights, ECG/Heart Screener, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications and priority phone support | Users with a clear use case for MG’s additional features |
Feature access depends on both the hardware and the membership. Buying a standard 5.0 does not unlock MG functions through an app update. Before subscribing, check WHOOP’s current membership comparison and feature list, especially if you are buying outside the U.S.

What changed from WHOOP 4.0?
The upgrade is real but evolutionary. WHOOP says 5.0 is 7% smaller than 4.0 and has 14+ days of battery life. It remains screenless, and its central sleep, strain, recovery and coaching approach has not been replaced with a fundamentally different training system. The new generation is also a broader hardware-and-membership lineup: One, Peak and Life divide features that are easy to mistake as part of one product.
Hardware and battery
WHOOP lists the 5.0 sensor at 34.7 × 24 × 10.6 mm and 26.5 g. Its smaller profile may make continuous wear less obtrusive, though comfort depends on fit, placement, activity and personal preference. The advertised 14+ days is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee. Independent reports have found results vary: Wareable describes a substantial battery improvement, while TechRadar reported roughly nine days in heavier use. Usage, sensor activity, firmware, connectivity and charging habits can all affect runtime.
The sensor can be charged while worn using a compatible battery pack. The included charging accessory depends on tier: One includes a basic wired charger, while Peak and Life include the wireless PowerPack, according to WHOOP’s membership comparison. WHOOP 4.0 bands and battery packs are not compatible with 5.0 or MG, so factor replacement accessories into an upgrade decision. See WHOOP’s device specifications and charging guidance.

The bigger change for many buyers is what each subscription includes. One covers the core fitness and recovery features. Peak adds health monitoring and proprietary Healthspan measures. Life pairs the higher tier with MG hardware and additional ECG, rhythm-notification and blood-pressure insight functions. Review coverage generally finds the platform’s data depth and battery improvement appealing, while noting that some training features feel more like refinement than reinvention.

What using WHOOP is like
Sleep, recovery and coaching
WHOOP’s value proposition is a continuous feedback loop: wear the sensor, log relevant behaviors, review how sleep and training relate to recovery, and use that context to plan activity. A recovery score is an algorithmic interpretation of signals such as HRV and resting heart rate—not a direct measurement of a single objective state or a command to train or rest. The system is most useful when you wear it consistently and consider the trends alongside how you actually feel.
Training and daily strain
Strain and heart-rate-zone tracking can help regular exercisers understand the cumulative load WHOOP estimates from a day’s activity. The coaching layer is more consequential than the sensor alone: if you do not adjust workouts, recovery or habits based on its feedback, the subscription may provide little beyond measurements you already get elsewhere. WHOOP 5.0 should not be bought on the assumption that its core training experience is entirely new compared with 4.0.
Healthspan and WHOOP Age
Peak and Life include Healthspan features such as WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging. Treat these as proprietary, trend-oriented estimates, not established clinical measures of biological age. They may give a long-term health-focused user another way to reflect on habits, but a displayed score is valuable only if it leads to useful, sustainable decisions.
Comfort and placement
The screenless design and smaller sensor suit people who want to wear a tracker without a bright display on their wrist. WHOOP says it can be worn on the wrist or at validated WHOOP Body locations using Any-Wear Pods. A snug, consistent fit matters for sensor contact. Loose wear, movement, sweat, poor placement or changing locations can affect readings. Some sports or sleep routines may be more comfortable with another garment or placement, and 4.0 straps do not carry over.

Accuracy and limitations
WHOOP uses optical PPG sensors for heart rate and HRV, accelerometers for movement and strain, and skin-temperature sensing for sleep and recovery-related analysis; MG uses ECG technology for selected features. Accuracy depends on the metric, fit, contact, placement and movement. There is no sound basis here for calling it the most accurate tracker across the board. Judge it by consistency and whether its trends help you—not by treating every reading as laboratory-grade truth. WHOOP’s accuracy guidance explains factors that can affect readings.
WHOOP 5.0 vs WHOOP MG
Both devices use the WHOOP platform and share the long-battery, screenless concept. MG is the Life-tier hardware and adds the hardware-and-membership combination needed for on-demand ECG, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications and Blood Pressure Insights. Those capabilities are not standard WHOOP 5.0 features, and the ordinary 5.0 cannot gain them through a software upgrade.
Blood Pressure Insights are not a medical blood-pressure monitor and do not diagnose or manage a condition. ECG and rhythm features have age, use and regional availability limits; they do not replace professional medical evaluation. Check current ECG guidance and the feature terms for your country before choosing Life.

The membership—not a one-time device price—is the main cost of ownership. At the cited U.S. annual rates, two years cost $398 for One, $478 for Peak or $718 for Life. Over three years, that becomes $597, $717 and $1,077, respectively, before taxes, promotions or future price changes. These totals assume the listed annual price remains unchanged and exclude accessories or shipping.

- BUILT FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE – SportFlex is designed with waterproof, sweatproof, and dirtproof silicone. It’s highly durable and designed to withstand your most intense workouts and adventures.
- MADE WITH SOFT-TOUCH SILICONE – SportFlex is ultra-smooth, hygienic, and easy to clean. Small scuffs can be wiped off, or you can deep-clean the band with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth followed by a water rinse.
- ADJUSTABLE AND BREATHABLE – SportFlex is made with an adjustable closure system to ensure a snug, secure fit—no matter how intense your workout. The band includes ventilation details, making it extra breathable and comfortable.
- 100% WATERPROOF – SportFlex is completely waterproof, making it an essential accessory for everything from swimming laps and surfing to high-sweat, high-intensity workouts.
- COMPATIBILITY – This is not compatible with the WHOOP 4.0
That can be a reasonable spend for a user who wears WHOOP day and night, trains often, values coaching and acts on the sleep and recovery feedback. It is harder to justify if you mainly want occasional workout recording or basic activity data. An Apple Watch, Garmin or Fitbit may already cover enough of your needs, though the experience and buying model differ; a subscription-free screenless tracker may suit someone who wants fewer ongoing costs. Alternatives surfaced in current coverage include Fitbit Air, Polar Loop and Amazfit Helio Strap, but confirm each model’s current price, subscription terms, return policy and phone compatibility before comparing totals.
The central trade-off is simple: WHOOP’s appeal is the combination of continuous wear, historical trends and coaching, not a display full of smartwatch functions. If you do not want to wear it consistently or use its feedback, a lower-cost or already-owned device is likely better value.
Which tier should you choose?
- Choose One if you mainly want sleep, strain, recovery, workouts and coaching. Do not choose it expecting Health Monitor, Stress Monitor or Healthspan; those are Peak features.
- Choose Peak if you want One’s core system plus Health Monitor, Stress Monitor and Healthspan features, and are willing to pay $40 more per year than One at the cited U.S. prices. For committed users, it is the most balanced tier.
- Choose Life only if MG’s ECG, rhythm notifications or Blood Pressure Insights are a specific reason for buying. It costs $120 more per year than Peak at the cited rates, and the added features are not a substitute for clinical care.
Should WHOOP 4.0 owners upgrade?
Keep the 4.0 if it works, you mainly use core sleep and recovery features, and you do not need the new hardware or higher-tier functions. WHOOP says members can continue using their 4.0; upgrading is optional. The strongest reasons to move are frustration with battery life, a preference for the smaller sensor, or a concrete need for current-generation features.
Recommended Free Tools
WHOOP’s support documentation lists upgrade paths that can include a $49 fee for 5.0 on Peak or $79 for MG on Life, and eligible membership extensions may include hardware. These are not universal offers: eligibility and billing depend on remaining membership time, tier, region and the path selected. An extension or renewal does not necessarily ship a device automatically; complete the upgrade flow and verify the terms before paying. See upgrade eligibility and upgrade instructions.
Best Value
- Simple & Screen-Free Design – Easy to use and ultra-lightweight, comfortable for all-day wear without the distraction of a screen
- Powerful Health Monitoring – Accurately tracks heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen, HRV, sleep quality, and stress levels to help you better understand your body
- 100+ Sports Modes – Supports a wide range of fitness activities with precise tracking, making it your reliable companion for workouts and daily movement
- Ultra-Long Battery Life – Just 2 hours of charging powers up to 47 days of standby, so you can focus on your goals without constant recharging
- No Subscription Required – Enjoy all features with the free app, fast syncing, and easy Bluetooth connection—no hidden costs
Remember that old bands and battery packs will not work with the new sensors. If your existing 4.0 is reliable and its battery is acceptable, the familiar core experience may not justify extending a subscription just to get a modest hardware refresh.
Phone compatibility to check first
WHOOP’s current support requirements recommend Bluetooth 5.0 or higher, Android 11 or higher, and iOS 17 or higher for 5.0; iOS 15 and earlier are no longer compatible with the app. MG ECG and blood-pressure functions also require Bluetooth 5.0 or higher. Requirements can change, so check the latest app requirements against your exact phone model and operating system before ordering.
Returns, trials and billing pitfalls
WHOOP’s cited U.S. return policy allows WHOOP 5.0 and MG returns within 30 days of receipt for a refund minus shipping costs. That return window is not the same thing as a trial offer. The cited trial offer is tied to a certified pre-owned 5.0 and can convert to a 12-month Peak membership at $239 per year if not cancelled. Failure to return trial hardware can incur a $110 restocking fee. Offers and terms may vary, so read the checkout details and current return policy.
Record the relevant deadline and confirm both membership cancellation and hardware-return instructions. Downgrades generally take effect at the next billing cycle rather than producing a partial refund for unused time. If you retain MG hardware but downgrade, access to ECG, rhythm notifications and blood-pressure features can be lost.
Quick Recap
Who should buy WHOOP 5.0?
- Regular athlete: A good candidate if recovery and sleep trends will influence training decisions. Start with One unless Peak’s additional monitoring matters to you.
- Sleep and habit optimizer: Consider Peak if you will use its broader monitoring and Healthspan tools as long-term context rather than chase daily scores.
- Casual exerciser: Usually poor value unless the screenless form and coaching are unusually compelling; the recurring fee is substantial for occasional use.
- Current 4.0 member: Upgrade for a concrete battery, size or feature need, not simply because a new generation exists.
- Health-feature seeker: Consider Life/MG only after checking local availability and understanding that insights are not a diagnosis or replacement for care.
- Subscription-averse buyer: Skip it. The membership is central to the WHOOP experience, not an optional add-on to a fully useful standalone watch.
