WHOOP MG feels more like a refined WHOOP than a new kind of wearable. Its longer claimed battery life and quicker morning data are the benefits most likely to matter every day; its ECG and blood-pressure features are the reasons to pay extra for MG over WHOOP 5.0. At $359 a year for WHOOP Life in the U.S., that premium makes sense mainly if you specifically want those cardiovascular tools. If you want ordinary sleep, recovery, and workout tracking, the less expensive WHOOP tiers offer the more compelling value.

What WHOOP MG is—and what it isn’t

WHOOP MG is the medical-feature version of WHOOP’s fifth-generation wearable, bundled with the WHOOP Life membership. Like other WHOOP devices, it is a small, screen-free sensor worn in a fabric band, designed for continuous tracking rather than on-wrist interaction. There is no watch face, notification display, GPS map, or conventional workout interface. The experience lives in the phone app: sleep, strain, recovery, heart-rate variability (HRV), resting heart rate, and coaching.

The MG distinction is its conductive clasp and access, through Life, to features including an on-demand ECG, heart-rhythm screening and blood-pressure insights. WHOOP describes the device generation as 7% smaller than its predecessor and claims 14-plus days of battery life. Those hardware claims do not make every WHOOP score a clinical measurement: “medical-grade” applies only to particular regulated features where they are offered, not automatically to sleep staging, recovery, Healthspan, or all other metrics. WHOOP’s launch announcement describes the MG and 5.0 generation.

First impressions: a familiar band with a new clasp

The first change is practical rather than dramatic. The sensor is smaller than WHOOP 4.0, and the redesigned clasp provides the contacts needed for ECG readings. The fabric-band format remains recognizably WHOOP: it is meant to stay on through workouts, sleep, and the rest of the day, not to behave like a traditional watch. Early review coverage found the smaller form and long-wear experience familiar, but a short trial cannot settle comfort for every wrist, sleeping position, or training routine.

The clasp also creates an ownership wrinkle for current members: WHOOP 4.0 straps do not fit MG. Budget for compatible accessories if you rely on spare bands or wearables. The U.S. Life package currently includes a SuperKnit Luxe band and Wireless PowerPack; check WHOOP’s current accessory listings for other fit options before upgrading. WHOOP says its Body garments can also support off-wrist wear with compatible products, which may suit training where a wrist band is inconvenient.

The screen-free design is still the central trade-off. It keeps the sensor unobtrusive and avoids turning it into another screen to check, but you cannot glance at a watch face, control a workout on the device, use maps, or receive wrist notifications. MG is best understood as a sensor and app membership, not as an Apple Watch or Garmin substitute.

The battery is the most convincing everyday upgrade

WHOOP claims 14-plus days per charge for MG and includes a Wireless PowerPack with Life. That is a substantial practical improvement over the roughly four-to-five-day WHOOP 4.0 battery reported in early comparisons. A longer interval between charges is useful beyond convenience: fewer charging gaps can mean more continuous sleep and recovery data, and a weeklong trip is less likely to require packing a charging routine.

The PowerPack attaches to the band so the sensor can charge while worn, preserving tracking instead of requiring the device to come off your wrist. The claimed duration is not a guarantee for every person or use pattern; real battery life can vary. Still, among the changes a wearer may notice immediately, reduced charging friction is more concrete than a new composite health score. Early review coverage also called battery life a standout improvement, particularly for people who forget to charge wearables.

Morning data arrives sooner, but speed is not proof of accuracy

WHOOP says the new generation has a faster processor, and an early reviewer reported that sleep and recovery information appeared within minutes of waking, rather than requiring a longer wait. That is a worthwhile usability improvement if you check your recovery before deciding how hard to train.

It helps to separate four things that can be conflated: when the sensor records data, when it syncs to the phone, how long sleep processing takes, and when a specific feature such as an ECG result becomes available. A quicker-looking app does not establish that sleep staging or HRV is more accurate. Early impressions of improved-feeling sleep and HRV tracking, and of WHOOP’s Daily Outlook coaching, are subjective observations—not independent validation of the sensors or algorithms.

Using the ECG and Heart Screener

The MG’s ECG is a deliberate, on-demand check rather than a continuous display. In the workflow described by early review coverage, you open the ECG or Heart Screener function in the WHOOP app, place the required fingers on the conductive clasp contacts, hold still for a 30-second reading, then review the result in the app. The reviewer saw a report roughly a minute later; that is an observation from the reviewed version, not a guaranteed processing time.

WHOOP presents the ECG and related heart-rhythm tools as a way to screen for potential signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib) and support irregular-heart-rhythm notifications where available. They do not diagnose every heart condition, and a normal result does not rule out a serious problem. If you have concerning symptoms, seek medical care rather than waiting for or relying on a wearable reading.

There are meaningful eligibility limits. WHOOP says its ECG feature is not intended for people under 22, people with known arrhythmias other than AFib, or people with pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), or other implanted electronic devices. Availability and regulatory authorization vary by region, so the U.S. feature list may not match what is offered where you live. An early review also noted that AFib screening may not work for users with a resting heart rate below 50 beats per minute—a relevant caution for some endurance athletes. Check the current WHOOP Life information and regional eligibility before treating ECG access as a reason to buy.

If a reading fails, do not take the failure as evidence of a heart problem. Movement, poor contact, an unsupported device or user profile, and regional availability can all interfere with access or results. Follow the app’s positioning instructions and retry when still; contact WHOOP support if the feature remains unavailable. For symptoms or a concerning result, consult a clinician.

Blood-pressure insights are not a cuff replacement

WHOOP Life also offers blood-pressure insights, but they should be read as wellness estimates and trends—not as a direct measurement from a cuff or a tool for diagnosing or managing hypertension. The early review described an initial calibration using three readings from a blood-pressure cuff, followed by daily estimates based on physiological signals. Product workflows can change, so use WHOOP’s current setup instructions rather than assuming that precise sequence will remain the same.

Calibration quality matters. Use a properly sized cuff, position it as directed, sit consistently, and avoid treating a single estimate as definitive. If WHOOP shows a concerning number or trend, confirm it with a validated cuff and discuss it with a healthcare professional. Do not change medication or make treatment decisions based on the band’s estimate. Feature availability and presentation may vary by country.

Recovery, Healthspan, and women’s health

Most of the familiar WHOOP system is not exclusive to MG. Sleep, strain, recovery, HRV, resting heart rate, and coaching are central to the broader membership experience. WHOOP’s current U.S. comparison lists Healthspan and Pace of Aging on Peak and Life, while women’s hormonal insights are included across One, Peak, and Life. MG adds the medical-feature hardware and Life access; it is not required simply to use those general tracking tools.

Healthspan brings together WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging, using longer-term behavior and recovery trends to frame health over time. The early review said the feature became available after 21 days of data; onboarding thresholds may change with software updates. These can be useful prompts for noticing patterns, but they are not clinical measurements of biological age. Treat a composite score as context, not a diagnosis or a verdict on your health.

The early reviewer also found WHOOP’s hormonal insights useful for relating menstrual-cycle phases to sleep, recovery, HRV, resting heart rate, and strain. The app can help put changes in context, but cycle experiences vary, and generalized recommendations should not override how an individual feels or medical advice. Women’s Hormonal Insights are listed on all three main plans, so they are not, by themselves, a reason to pay for MG.

Is WHOOP MG worth $359 a year?

Life costs $359 annually in the U.S., compared with $239 for Peak and $199 for One. That makes the question less “Is MG a good wearable?” and more “Will I use the Life-only features enough to justify the recurring difference?” Over two years, the listed Life price totals $718 before taxes or changes; over three years, $1,077. The included hardware and battery may soften the cost, but they do not remove the annual membership commitment.

  • Consider MG/Life if you already want WHOOP’s screen-free recovery system and specifically value on-demand ECG or blood-pressure insights, understand their limits, and are comfortable with annual billing.
  • Consider Peak if you want the newer hardware and Healthspan-related tools but do not need ECG or blood-pressure features. WHOOP lists Peak at $239 per year in the U.S.
  • Consider One or another tracker if your main interests are sleep, strain, recovery, and basic fitness tracking. If you want GPS, maps, notifications, music, or a display, a conventional sports watch or smartwatch is likely a better fit.
  • Think carefully before upgrading from 4.0 if it still meets your needs. MG’s clearest upgrade reasons are longer claimed battery life, quicker data availability, and Life’s additional cardiovascular features—not a wholesale change to the familiar WHOOP routine.

Endurance athletes should pay particular attention to the reported low-resting-heart-rate limitation on AFib screening. Anyone buying mainly for blood pressure should first ask whether they are comfortable calibrating with a cuff and treating the output as a trend estimate rather than a clinical reading. And if you already own 4.0 bands, factor in the cost of replacing incompatible accessories.

WHOOP MG is at its best for someone who wants continuous, screen-free tracking and will actively use the specific heart-monitoring tools included with Life. For everyone else, the clearest first impression may be that WHOOP has made its wearable more convenient—but not necessarily more worth paying for.
