WHOOP MG is one of the most capable screenless wearables for recovery coaching and continuous health trends, but it is not the smartest choice for everyone. Its ECG feature can record an on-demand, single-lead reading, while Blood Pressure Insights estimate trends rather than measure pressure with a cuff. The hardware also comes with a substantial commitment: U.S. WHOOP Life membership is listed at $359 a year. Buy it if you want WHOOP’s always-on coaching and will use its additional heart features; skip it if you want a conventional smartwatch, a clinical blood-pressure monitor, or basic sleep tracking for less.

What WHOOP MG is—and what “medical grade” means

WHOOP MG is the medical-feature version of WHOOP’s fifth-generation screenless sensor. The device collects physiological data and presents it in the WHOOP app; it is not a watch with an on-device interface. WHOOP says MG is about 7% smaller than WHOOP 4.0 and claims up to 14 days of battery life. It ships with an ECG-compatible SuperKnit Luxe band and supports compatible WHOOP Body apparel. WHOOP’s MG feature and compatibility details and its launch announcement describe the hardware and battery claim.

“Medical grade” needs a narrow reading. The FDA’s 510(k) clearance applies to WHOOP’s ECG system for acquiring and displaying ECG signals suitable for analysis; it does not certify every WHOOP metric or turn the entire platform into a diagnostic system. The FDA clearance document is the relevant regulatory source. WHOOP MG does not diagnose heart disease, replace clinical evaluation, or continuously watch for every dangerous cardiac event.

The no-screen design is a defining trade-off. There are no on-device menus, notifications, music playback, apps, maps, or built-in GPS navigation. You get a discreet tracker meant to be worn around the clock, with interpretation and coaching in the phone app. That can reduce distraction and make overnight wear easy; it also means MG is a poor fit if you want pace, route, or workout feedback at a glance.

The cost is the real buying decision

WHOOP MG is bundled with the top WHOOP Life membership, so the purchase is not simply a hardware upgrade. WHOOP’s U.S. annual plan information, checked August 16, 2026, lists these prices; offers, renewals, existing-member upgrade terms, and prices outside the U.S. can differ, so confirm the checkout total.

U.S. plan Listed annual price What it adds
WHOOP One $199 standard annual price; some first-year offers list $149 Core sleep, strain, recovery, VO₂ Max, Journal, and AI Coach features
WHOOP Peak $239 WHOOP 5.0 plus Health Monitor, Stress Monitor, and Healthspan features
WHOOP Life $359 WHOOP MG, Heart Screener with ECG, Blood Pressure Insights, and priority phone support

See WHOOP’s current U.S. pricing and membership feature comparison for plan details. At the listed annual rate, Life costs $1,077 over three years before tax or any accessories. That is the clearest way to assess value: will you use the coaching and cardiovascular features enough, consistently, to justify the recurring cost? If you mainly want WHOOP’s recovery and sleep system, Peak may provide the better balance. WHOOP is a membership-based platform, not a conventional device purchase whose full functionality is yours without an ongoing plan; check the membership terms before buying or letting a membership lapse.

ECG: useful screening, not continuous monitoring

Heart Screener is an on-demand recording started in the WHOOP app. It uses the MG device and ECG-compatible materials to produce a single-lead ECG-style reading, not the 12-lead ECG used in clinical settings. It is not a continuous cardiac monitor. WHOOP’s ECG setup and accuracy guidance says to keep the band and skin dry for good contact and recommends removing the battery pack before recording.

That makes ECG potentially useful for an occasional rhythm check, including screening for irregular rhythms such as atrial fibrillation where the feature is authorized and supported. Availability and intended use can depend on location, regulatory authorization, age requirements, phone compatibility, and software. A normal result does not rule out every heart problem; an abnormal or inconclusive result is not a diagnosis and warrants appropriate medical follow-up. If you need ongoing monitoring for a known condition, ask your clinician what device and workflow to use rather than relying on WHOOP as your primary monitor.

Blood Pressure Insights are estimates, not cuff readings

WHOOP MG does not inflate a cuff or directly measure blood pressure in the usual way. Blood Pressure Insights estimate daily systolic and diastolic ranges from wearable-derived signals and require calibration with a traditional blood-pressure monitor. WHOOP describes the feature as an estimated trend tool exclusive to MG with Life; see its Blood Pressure Insights explanation.

The practical value is convenience and context: a trend in the WHOOP app may help you notice a change over time. It is not a reason to discard a validated home monitor. Calibration quality matters, and an estimate should not be used to manage hypertension or adjust medication on its own. If you have high blood pressure, pregnancy-related blood-pressure concerns, cardiovascular disease, medication changes, or symptoms that worry you, follow clinical advice and use validated equipment. Anyone purchasing MG chiefly for blood-pressure awareness should budget for a validated upper-arm cuff as well.

The wider WHOOP platform: strong on patterns and coaching

WHOOP’s core proposition is not just the MG sensor. Across the platform, the app tracks sleep, sleep need and debt, strain, recovery, heart-rate and HRV trends, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, and other signals. Depending on membership tier, it adds tools such as Stress Monitor, Health Monitor, Strength Trainer, VO₂ Max, Journal behavior correlations, AI Coach, and Healthspan features including WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging.

These outputs are not all measurements of the same kind. HRV is a physiological measurement; Recovery and Strain are WHOOP’s interpretations and proprietary scores. WHOOP Age and Pace of Aging are algorithmic estimates, not clinical biological-age diagnoses. AI Coach can help turn logged habits and trends into suggestions, but its guidance is not medical advice. The platform is most useful when a wearer logs relevant behavior, checks patterns over time, and makes sensible changes to sleep, training, or routines—not when a score is treated as a verdict.

Battery, charging, and daily wear

WHOOP claims up to 14 days for 5.0 and MG, but that is a manufacturer figure, not a guarantee. Independent reports have found real-world duration can vary; WIRED’s review did not reach the advertised duration in its testing, while TechRadar’s review also discusses battery and calibration in practice. Settings, syncing, broadcast use, temperature, and battery age can affect runtime.

The PowerPack charging approach is a practical strength: the tracker can stay on your body while it charges, reducing gaps in sleep and recovery data. The MG hardware and charger ecosystem are not interchangeable with WHOOP 4.0 battery packs or chargers, so factor the accessory change into an upgrade. The smaller, screenless module and band/apparel options favor discreet 24/7 wear, but comfort is individual—particularly with premium metal components during sleep or exercise. The lack of a display also makes the device passive by design: you review data in the app rather than glancing at your wrist mid-workout.

Compatibility and setup

You need a compatible iPhone or Android phone with the WHOOP app, Bluetooth enabled, and current software. WHOOP says MG’s ECG and Blood Pressure Insights require Bluetooth 5.0 or newer; some Android phones’ background restrictions can interfere with syncing. Check the current app requirements before purchase. ECG also needs ECG-compatible band materials and dry skin contact. BP Insights need a conventional cuff for calibration. Health-feature availability may be limited by region and regulatory support.

Who should choose WHOOP MG?

  • Choose MG/Life if you already rely on WHOOP’s recovery and strain approach, want a screenless tracker you can wear continuously, and will use occasional ECG screening and estimated BP trends with appropriate caution. You should be comfortable with $359 annual U.S. pricing and with reviewing app guidance regularly.
  • Choose WHOOP Peak/5.0 instead if you want the newer WHOOP hardware and broader coaching, but ECG and BP estimates are not worth the Life premium. For existing 5.0 users, MG’s main case is those cardiovascular features, not a wholesale change to the recovery platform.
  • Keep your WHOOP 4.0 if its sleep, recovery, and strain tracking already serves you and you do not need MG’s features. A 4.0 charger will not work with MG, so the upgrade entails new charging hardware as well.
  • Choose an Apple Watch if you use an iPhone and want a screen, apps, notifications, GPS, and a more general-purpose smartwatch with health features. Apple lists Series 11 from $399 in the U.S. and identifies ECG and hypertension notifications among its capabilities; see Apple’s buying page and Series 11 health details. It solves a different problem and has a much more watch-like interface.
  • Choose Oura Ring 4 if sleep and readiness are your priorities and you prefer a ring. Oura lists 5–8 days of battery life and U.S. membership at $5.99 monthly or $69.99 yearly; full functionality has a membership component. See Ring 4 specifications and Oura membership details.
  • Choose a Garmin sports watch if standalone GPS, routes, workout screens, and training features matter more than a screenless coaching system. Garmin’s Venu 4 announcement lists a $549.99 suggested starting price and qualifies ECG availability.
  • Buy a validated cuff first if your main need is blood-pressure monitoring. WHOOP’s estimate can be an additional trend layer, not your primary measuring device.

For athletes, the key question is whether recovery reflection matters more than real-time training data. WHOOP’s screenless format and coaching can suit people who already know how they train; runners and cyclists needing on-wrist pace, routes, or live workout metrics are better served by a GPS watch. For sleep-first shoppers, MG may be more platform and cost than necessary.

Verdict

WHOOP MG is best understood as a premium, screenless health-and-recovery membership with an ECG-capable sensor—not as a universal medical wearable. Its continuous wear, charging convenience, and coaching ecosystem are compelling for people who will act on the trends. The ECG is a useful occasional screen with limits, and Blood Pressure Insights are estimates that still leave a cuff in the picture. If those distinctions fit your needs and you will use the platform, MG can be an excellent wearable. If you want a smartwatch, medical monitoring, or only basic sleep data, the $359 Life plan is difficult to justify.
