WHOOP partially reversed its controversial WHOOP 5.0 upgrade policy on May 10, 2025—but it did not restore a free upgrade for every active subscriber. Members with more than 12 months remaining became eligible for a free WHOOP 5.0 upgrade on the Peak plan. Subscribers with less time left may still need to pay a fee or extend their membership.
The dispute became a test of WHOOP’s subscription model: did “access to the latest hardware” mean every active member received new hardware, or did eligibility depend on the remaining membership term?
What changed in WHOOP’s upgrade policy?
When WHOOP launched WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG in May 2025, some existing subscribers were shown a $49 upgrade fee for WHOOP 5.0 or a $79 fee for WHOOP MG. The alternative was to extend the membership and receive hardware through the applicable plan.

The company responded on May 10, 2025, by changing the eligibility rule:

- Members with less than 12 months remaining were still directed toward a paid upgrade or membership extension.
WHOOP’s current support guidance uses a “12 months or more remaining” threshold for the free WHOOP 5.0 route. Because support pages and checkout eligibility can change, members should verify the offer shown in their account before paying or extending.

Why the fitness community reacted so strongly
The fee challenged WHOOP’s core value proposition
The backlash was not really about whether $49 was affordable. WHOOP had used its membership model to distinguish itself from products where customers buy a tracker or smartwatch and later purchase replacement hardware. Members paid continuously for the service and reasonably expected that ongoing payment to include access to future sensors.
The Tool Desk

The timing magnified the frustration
The upgrade controversy arrived alongside WHOOP’s newer One, Peak, and Life structure, with different hardware bundles and feature access. That made the launch feel less like a simple device refresh and more like a restructuring of what subscribers received at each tier.
Contemporary coverage reported complaints from users who believed loyal members were being asked to pay again for technology they had been led to expect as part of membership. TechRadar’s account of the backlash documented the initial fee controversy and reaction.
The threshold created unequal outcomes
The correction helped some members but created an obvious dividing line. Someone with 13 months left could qualify for a free WHOOP 5.0 upgrade, while someone with 11 months left could face a $49 charge or need to extend the membership.

That difference mattered especially to members who had recently renewed or purchased after seeing language suggesting that active subscribers would receive the latest hardware. WHOOP’s own community discussion includes complaints from members with roughly nine months remaining who said the upgrade expectation influenced their decision to subscribe.
Did WHOOP break its original promise?
There is no simple answer that applies to every member or jurisdiction.
WHOOP’s position is that membership has always included access to the latest hardware, but eligibility was tied to the amount of time left on the subscription. The company said a statement suggesting that members with six months remaining would receive a free upgrade was an erroneous blog post. WHOOP also said the six-month rule related to the transition from WHOOP 3.0 to WHOOP 4.0, not the move from WHOOP 4.0 to WHOOP 5.0.
Customers’ position is that WHOOP’s broader “latest hardware” messaging created a reasonable expectation that active members would not have to pay separately for a new sensor. Many members say the remaining-term restriction was not clearly communicated when they subscribed or renewed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The most accurate conclusion is that WHOOP’s public messaging created a broad expectation of included hardware, while the company disputes the interpretation that every active subscriber qualified regardless of remaining term. That supports describing the episode as a policy and trust failure, but not as a definitive legal breach without analyzing a specific contract, jurisdiction, or claim.
Who qualifies for a free upgrade now?
| Member situation | Practical route |
|---|---|
| 12 months or more remaining on Peak | Eligible for a free WHOOP 5.0 upgrade, with the discount applied during checkout. |
| Less than 12 months remaining on Peak | Pay the $49 WHOOP 5.0 upgrade fee or extend membership and complete the upgrade flow. |
| Eligible member who paid the $49 fee during the affected launch period | WHOOP said qualifying fees would be refunded or waived according to its policy. |
| Life member seeking WHOOP MG | Use the Life upgrade route. Official guidance lists a $79 one-time fee, while a 12-month Life extension includes MG hardware. |
| Trial member | Convert to membership or purchase a 12-month extension first. The one-time upgrade-fee route is not available during the trial. |
| Family-plan member | The family administrator must upgrade the plan. Individual upgrades are not available under WHOOP’s stated guidance. |
| Founding Member | Use the separate Founding Member terms rather than assuming standard pricing or waivers. |
WHOOP’s cited U.S. support guidance lists a $239 12-month Peak extension and a $359 12-month Life extension. Prices, eligibility, taxes, promotions, and availability may vary by country, account, plan structure, and member status.
For Founding Members, WHOOP lists $99 for a 12-month Peak extension, $49 for WHOOP 5.0, $219 for a 12-month Life extension, and $79 for WHOOP MG. Its guide says the upgrade fee is not eligible for waivers. See the Founding Member Upgrade Guide.

WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG are not the same upgrade
The $49 and $79 routes should not be treated as interchangeable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- WHOOP 5.0 is associated with the One and Peak membership structure.
- WHOOP MG is tied to the higher Life membership and its additional features.
WHOOP currently describes the tiers broadly as follows:
- WHOOP One: WHOOP 5.0, a basic charger, and a CoreKnit band.
- WHOOP Peak: WHOOP 5.0, a Wireless PowerPack, and a SuperKnit band.
- WHOOP Life: WHOOP MG, a Wireless PowerPack, and a SuperKnit Luxe band.
This distinction matters because a Life upgrade includes both a different device and a different membership tier. It is not simply a sensor exchange for $79.
It is also important to separate three things that are often conflated:
- Software updates: new features delivered to hardware a member already owns.
- Hardware upgrades: moving from WHOOP 4.0 to WHOOP 5.0 or MG.
- Membership-tier benefits: features and capabilities available only under One, Peak, or Life.
WHOOP says members receive regular feature updates on owned hardware, but feature availability can depend on the device, plan, region, and regulatory status. Its membership page also notes that ECG, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, and other regulated features are not available everywhere and have age and medical-use limitations.

How to upgrade without an unexpected charge
- Open the WHOOP mobile app.
- Select More in the navigation bar.
- Select My Account.
- Open Membership and Billing.
- Choose the available upgrade method and hardware.
- Review the price, extension term, renewal details, and device shown at checkout.
- Complete the payment or membership extension.
- Finish the hardware upgrade order through the upgrade flow.
- Pair the new device when it arrives.
The crucial detail is that renewing or extending alone does not necessarily create an upgrade order. WHOOP’s instructions require members to return to the upgrade page and complete the hardware step. If you extend first but do not complete that flow, you may still have the old device and no shipment in progress.
You can continue using WHOOP 4.0 while waiting. WHOOP says the old device does not need to be returned, although members may use its Upcycle Program.

Should you upgrade, wait, or leave WHOOP?
Upgrade now if
- You have at least 12 months remaining and the checkout page shows the free WHOOP 5.0 offer.
- You specifically need a feature that depends on WHOOP 5.0 or MG hardware.
- Your WHOOP 4.0 is failing or aging and continued support or warranty coverage matters.
- You expect to use the device long enough for the fee or new membership commitment to make sense.
Wait if
- You have less than 12 months remaining and do not need new hardware immediately.
- The features you want are software features available on your current device.
- You may cancel at renewal or are reconsidering subscription-based hardware.
- You have not confirmed that the desired feature or regulated capability is available in your country and plan.
Extend only after checking the numbers
Before accepting an extension, confirm the exact price shown for your account, whether the term auto-renews, how the extension affects your existing time, whether the upgrade discount appears at checkout, and whether you are using a family or Founding Member plan.
Compare the total commitment—not just the upgrade fee—with the value of keeping WHOOP for another year or two. A $49 hardware charge may be reasonable for a member who intends to stay. It is poor value for someone who is already considering cancellation.
Common misconceptions
“I have an active membership, so the device is free.”
Not automatically. The result depends on remaining membership time, plan tier, extension mechanics, and sometimes member status.
“The $49 fee gets me WHOOP MG.”
No. The $49 route is associated with WHOOP 5.0 on Peak. MG is connected to Life and has a separate $79 upgrade route in the cited official guidance.
“The six-month rule definitely applied to WHOOP 5.0.”
That is disputed. WHOOP says the six-month wording belonged to the 3.0-to-4.0 transition and that a later statement was erroneous. Customers argue that the broader “latest hardware” language created a different expectation.
“WHOOP 4.0 became useless.”
WHOOP says existing members can continue using WHOOP 4.0 and receive regular feature updates on owned hardware. That does not guarantee indefinite support or feature parity with newer hardware.
“Medical-grade features work the same everywhere.”
They do not necessarily. Availability can vary by geography, age restrictions, medical-use limitations, membership tier, and regulatory approval.

What the episode says about subscription hardware
WHOOP’s controversy illustrates the central risk of subscription-based hardware: customers may accept recurring payments because they believe the service includes future device refreshes. If the upgrade rules later depend on an undisclosed or poorly communicated remaining-term threshold, the customer may view the subscription as less valuable than a conventional hardware purchase.
The episode also shows why companies need to distinguish clearly between service access, software updates, replacement hardware, and premium capabilities. WHOOP’s partial correction addressed the most visible complaint but left different groups with materially different outcomes.
For buyers, the practical lesson is to treat “latest hardware included” as incomplete until the membership agreement or account checkout states the eligibility conditions. Save the terms shown when subscribing or renewing, and check the upgrade page before extending a membership.

Alternatives if you no longer want WHOOP’s model
Leaving WHOOP may make sense if the subscription itself is the problem, but the best replacement depends on what you use WHOOP for:
- Oura may suit readers who prefer a ring and discreet sleep and recovery tracking. It remains a poor fit for anyone who specifically wants a wrist- or arm-worn workflow.
- Garmin is stronger for GPS, sports-watch functions, training metrics, and smartwatch capabilities. Garmin also offers an optional subscription service, so check the features included without it.
- Apple Watch fits iPhone users who want notifications, safety features, health tracking, and a full smartwatch. It is not suitable for Android users or people who dislike daily charging.
- Fitbit offers broad consumer activity and sleep tracking, with Fitbit Premium for additional features. It may be less compelling for athletes seeking WHOOP’s strain-and-recovery workflow.
WHOOP is a poor fit for readers who oppose recurring subscriptions, need built-in GPS or a display, want smartwatch apps, expect the hardware to remain useful after cancellation, or need medical diagnosis rather than wellness and fitness insights.
The bottom line
WHOOP responded to the backlash, but it did not fully restore the broadest interpretation of its earlier upgrade promise. Members with 12 months or more remaining may receive a free WHOOP 5.0 upgrade on Peak; many others still face a $49 or $79 charge, a membership extension, a higher tier, or no immediate upgrade.
Check the exact offer in WHOOP’s upgrade flow before renewing. The remaining term, Peak-versus-Life tier, family or Founding Member status, geography, and desired features determine whether upgrading is sensible.
