I did not leave the Apple Watch because it was bad. I left because Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Ultra finally made the Android trade-off worthwhile: substantially better endurance in my early use, a large titanium case, fast performance, useful Wear OS tiles, and freedom from the iPhone-only ecosystem. Apple Watch still won on payments, app availability, and health-data continuity. The right choice depends first on your phone, then on which compromises you can live with.
I was not an Apple Watch hater
I had used Android phones since 2009, then moved to an iPhone 12 Pro in 2020. Replacing a Fitbit with an Apple Watch Series 5 made sense, and I later upgraded to an Apple Watch Ultra. I liked Apple Pay, Apple Health, and apps such as Flighty. I had also tried several Wear OS watches, but none was compelling enough to keep permanently.
The 2024 Galaxy Watch Ultra changed that calculation. This was not a universal declaration that Samsung had beaten Apple. It was a decision to return to Android without giving up a premium, rugged smartwatch.
The original account was an early-ownership impression published on July 16, 2024, not a long-term laboratory comparison. That distinction matters: the battery figures below describe one reviewer’s usage, while the current specifications describe Samsung’s newer 2025 model.

The problems the Galaxy Watch Ultra solved
Battery life became practical
The clearest improvement was endurance. In early testing, the reviewer reported about 48 hours with the always-on display enabled and slightly more than three days with it disabled—better than his Apple Watch Ultra experience. That is a personal result, not a guarantee. LTE calls, GPS workouts, sleep tracking, brightness, notifications, and frequent sensor use can shorten any watch’s runtime.
Longer endurance has a practical consequence beyond convenience: it makes overnight wear and sleep tracking easier because the watch does not need to be removed every night to charge.
Samsung’s current US specification for the 2025 Galaxy Watch Ultra lists a 590mAh battery and up to 60 hours with the always-on display on. Manufacturer estimates use controlled conditions, so treat them as a ceiling rather than a promise. See the official specifications before buying.

A genuinely rugged, large design
The 47mm case, titanium construction, protective corner cushions, and large display suited the reviewer after he became comfortable with the Apple Watch Ultra’s size. Dual-frequency GPS, 10 ATM water resistance, IP68 protection, and Samsung’s MIL-STD-810H durability claim make the watch appropriate for outdoor use.

“Rugged” does not mean indestructible. A 47mm watch can feel bulky on a small wrist or while sleeping, and its industrial styling is not subtle. If you want a light fitness watch, this is the wrong direction regardless of brand.
Performance was better than expected
Early demonstrations had appeared sluggish, raising concerns about Samsung’s hardware. The reviewer found the retail experience much smoother and suspected that pre-release software, rather than the processor itself, explained much of the demo lag. App launches, scrolling, tile navigation, and voice commands felt responsive enough to make Wear OS a credible daily platform.
Samsung lists the 2025 model with a 3nm processor, 2GB of memory, and 64GB of storage. Fast hardware helps, but it cannot fix a poorly designed app or awkward navigation.

Wear OS provided more useful, customizable tiles and closer integration with Google services and Android. Most importantly, the watch did not force the reviewer to remain on an iPhone. That platform freedom was the underlying reason the switch mattered; battery life was simply the most visible benefit.

What I gave up by leaving Apple Watch
Apple Pay was easier
Apple Watch’s side-button shortcut makes paying almost automatic. The reviewer found the Samsung wallet workflow less direct and missed that simplicity. Galaxy Watch users may configure Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet, depending on preference, bank support, country, and transit-card availability. Check those details before switching; payment support is an ecosystem question, not merely a hardware feature.
Apple Health remained the stronger data home
Samsung offers an extensive list of sensors and health tools, including sleep coaching, sleep-apnea detection, ECG, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, body composition, blood oxygen, temperature sensing, Energy Score, and blood-pressure monitoring where available. But feature count is not the same as a better health platform.
The reviewer preferred Apple Health’s broader, more mature way of collecting and organizing information, including data such as time spent outdoors. Samsung’s health features can be useful while still feeling less comprehensive as a long-term archive.

Apps can decide the whole purchase
Flighty was a meaningful loss for a frequent traveler because its wrist-based flight alerts were part of the Apple experience. One unavailable app can outweigh titanium, GPS, or a faster processor.
Before moving platforms, list your essential airline, travel, smart-home, authentication, messaging, music, fitness, banking, navigation, and emergency apps. Confirm that each has a Wear OS equivalent and that the required watch features work in your country.

The Galaxy Watch Ultra is an Android-centered product, not a drop-in Apple Watch replacement for an iPhone. Samsung says it works with Android phones through Galaxy Wearable and Samsung Health, but “works with Android” does not mean every feature is identical on every handset.

- Samsung phone owner: You are the target audience for the fullest Galaxy experience, including Samsung’s health and device integrations.
- Other Android phone: Core smartwatch functions may work, but confirm health features, app support, and phone-specific restrictions for your exact model and region.
- LTE buyer: Phone-free connectivity still requires a compatible carrier and usually a separate cellular plan. LTE does not turn the watch into a complete phone.
One popular Samsung feature is also absent: the reviewer considered the lack of a rotating bezel a notable omission. If bezel navigation is central to why you like Samsung watches, try the interface before buying.

What changed with the 2025 Galaxy Watch Ultra?
The current 2025 model remains a 47mm LTE Wear OS watch. Samsung lists a 590mAh battery, up to 60 hours with always-on display enabled, a 3nm processor, 64GB of storage, 2GB of memory, dual-frequency L1+L5 GPS, titanium construction, and 10 ATM/IP68/MIL-STD-810H durability.
Samsung’s US purchase page has shown a $649.99 price, while another Samsung page displayed a temporary $549.99 promotion. Treat the lower figure as time-sensitive and separate standard pricing from trade-in credits or carrier offers. These current specifications update the product context; they do not retroactively turn the reviewer’s 2024 observations into testing of the 2025 watch.
Who should switch?
- You use a Samsung or Android phone and want a premium watch without iPhone lock-in.
- Two-day-plus endurance matters more than Apple’s ecosystem polish.
- You prefer a large, durable case and use GPS, hiking, cycling, swimming, or LTE.
- You want Wear OS and Google services, plus Samsung Health features available in your region.
Who should stay with Apple Watch Ultra?
- You use an iPhone and depend on seamless notifications, messaging, HomeKit, or Apple Pay.
- Apple Health is your primary health-data archive.
- You rely on iPhone-first apps such as Flighty.
- You prefer a mature, familiar workflow over longer battery life.
When Garmin makes more sense
Runners, cyclists, hikers, and endurance athletes may prefer Garmin for training analytics, recovery metrics, navigation, and battery measured in days or weeks. Garmin is a fitness-first platform with fewer phone-like apps; it is an alternative category rather than a direct Apple-versus-Samsung replacement.
The verdict
The Galaxy Watch Ultra did not make Apple Watch obsolete. It made leaving the iPhone ecosystem acceptable for a user who valued endurance, rugged hardware, Android freedom, and Wear OS flexibility more than Apple’s superior app and health-data integration. Start with your phone, audit your indispensable apps, verify regional health and wallet support, and only then decide whether the larger case and longer charging interval justify the switch.
