Garmin watches normally mirror text notifications from a paired phone; they do not usually receive ordinary SMS or iMessage messages independently. If texts are missing, the cause is most often a phone notification permission, Bluetooth or Garmin Connect connection, blocked app, privacy setting, Focus/Do Not Disturb mode, or Android battery restriction—not a failed watch.
Start by checking whether the text notification appears on your phone. Then work through the phone, Garmin Connect, watch, and pairing checks below.
Quick fix checklist
- Send yourself a test text and confirm it appears as a notification on the phone.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled and Garmin Connect shows the watch as connected.
- Check notification permissions for the phone’s Messages app.
- Check Smart Notifications or Phone Notifications in Garmin Connect.
- Temporarily disable Focus, Do Not Disturb, and battery-saver modes.
- On iPhone, enable Share System Notifications for the Garmin watch.
- On Android, restore Notification Access and remove Garmin Connect from battery optimization.
- Check whether Messages is blocked on the watch or in Garmin’s notification settings.
- Restart both devices before considering re-pairing.
First, identify what is failing
The phone does not show the text notification
Fix the phone first. Open the Messages app’s notification settings and confirm notifications are enabled. Also check Focus or Do Not Disturb, notification categories, lock-screen rules, and whether the individual conversation has been muted.

On Android, notification categories may be called channels or notification types. A category can be disabled even when notifications for the Messages app generally appear to be enabled.

Other notifications reach the watch, but texts do not
This usually points to Messages-specific permissions, a muted conversation, a blocked app, hidden previews, or a messaging app that is not generating an eligible notification. Check the Messages settings on the phone and the per-app notification settings in Garmin Connect or on the watch.
The watch vibrates, but the message is missing or incomplete
This is a message-preview or privacy problem rather than a complete notification failure. Enable message previews in the phone’s notification settings and review Garmin’s notification privacy controls. Depending on the model, the watch may show content immediately, only after an action, or only after a gesture.
iPhone: restore text notifications to a Garmin watch
1. Enable Share System Notifications
- Open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the information button beside the Garmin watch.
- Enable Share System Notifications.
Garmin’s current iPhone guidance uses this control for notification delivery to compatible Bluetooth-paired watches. Menu availability and exact requirements can vary by watch model and iOS version; the current support guidance includes instructions for iOS 18.2 or later.

2. Check Messages notifications and previews
- Open Settings > Notifications > Messages.
- Turn on Allow Notifications.
- Enable delivery to Notification Center.
- Set Show Previews to Always or When Unlocked.
If the iPhone itself does not produce a Messages notification, the Garmin cannot mirror it. Preview settings also affect whether the watch can display the message content rather than only an alert.
3. Check Focus
Open Settings > Focus and inspect every active Focus profile. Temporarily disable Focus, or allow Messages notifications in the relevant profile, then send another test text. Garmin notes that Focus can stop a pop-up notification from appearing on the watch even when the notification remains available in the watch’s notification widget or glance.
4. Unmute the conversation
In Messages, swipe left on the affected conversation and remove its mute. If messages from other people work but one contact’s messages do not, a muted thread or contact-specific notification rule is a likely explanation.

Android: restore text notifications to a Garmin watch
Android settings differ between Google Pixel, Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, Huawei, Oppo, and other phones. Use the setting names below as a guide; your phone may place them under a slightly different menu.

1. Restore Garmin Connect permissions
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select Garmin Connect or, where applicable, Garmin Golf.
- Open Permissions.
- Allow the relevant notification, SMS, contacts, or phone permissions offered by your device.
Android can revoke or alter permissions after an operating-system update, an app update, or a long period without using an app.
2. Restore Notification Access
- Open Garmin Connect.
- Go to More > Settings > Notifications.
- Open App Notifications or Smart Notifications.
- Confirm Notification Access is enabled.
- Temporarily allow notifications for all apps, or specifically enable your messaging app.
If Notification Access was revoked, Garmin Connect may remain paired while receiving no phone notifications.
3. Check the Messages app
Open either Settings > Apps > Messages or Settings > Notifications > App notifications, depending on the phone. Enable notifications for the messaging app and inspect each message category or channel. Make sure the category is not disabled, silent in a way your phone excludes from notification access, or restricted to a notification location the watch cannot mirror.
4. Remove battery restrictions
- Open the phone’s battery or app-battery settings.
- Find Garmin Connect.
- Set it to Unrestricted, Not optimized, or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
- Allow background activity and background data if those controls are available.
Aggressive battery management can stop Garmin Connect from processing notifications while the phone is locked or idle. Huawei and Oppo phones may apply additional background restrictions, so check their protected-app or auto-start controls as well.

5. Check Android-specific exceptions
- An app installed inside a Samsung Knox Secure Folder may not deliver notifications to the Garmin.
- Some persistent or low-priority Android notifications may not be forwarded.
- A notification blocked on the watch or phone may require manually restoring the app permission.
These are device- and software-dependent exceptions, not limitations that apply to every Android phone.

Check Garmin Connect and the watch
Enable smart notifications
In Garmin Connect, open the paired watch’s device settings and look for Notifications, Smart Notifications, or Phone Notifications. Confirm that notifications are enabled for normal use and, if your model separates them, during activities. Check that texts are not set to off or to calls only.
Garmin uses different menu names across Forerunner, Venu, vívoactive, fēnix, Instinct, and older models. If the setting is not in Garmin Connect, look under the watch’s connectivity, phone, or notification settings.
Check blocked apps on supported models
Some newer Garmin watches let you manage individual apps directly on the watch. A typical path is:
- Open the watch menu.
- Select Settings > Notifications & Alerts > Smart Notifications.
- Select Apps.
- On Android, inspect Blocked Apps; on iPhone, inspect Connected Apps where available.
- Allow the messaging app.
The app may not appear in this list until the phone and watch have received a notification from it. On iPhone, Apple’s native Phone and Messages handling can use separate calls-and-text settings rather than the same app list used for third-party apps.
Supported-model availability is not universal. Garmin’s current support information lists examples including the Enduro 3, fēnix 8 series, Forerunner 570 and 970, Venu 4, Venu X1, and vívoactive 6, among others.

Check Do Not Disturb, sleep, and battery saver
Inspect all relevant layers:
- Phone-level Do Not Disturb or Focus.
- Watch-level Do Not Disturb.
- Garmin Connect sleep-time settings that automatically activate Do Not Disturb.
- Watch battery saver or power-management modes.
- Android battery optimization applied to Garmin Connect.
If texts fail only at night, during workouts, or when the watch enters a particular power mode, compare the normal daily notification profile with the activity, sleep, or battery-saver profile.

When the watch shows an alert but not the message
Open the phone’s notification settings for the messaging app and enable its preview or message-content option. Also review lock-screen privacy settings. On iPhone, Garmin’s guidance supports Always or When Unlocked for Message previews; setting previews to never can prevent message text from being shown on a paired Garmin.

Restart before you re-pair
After changing settings:
- Restart the phone.
- Restart the Garmin watch.
- Open Garmin Connect and confirm the watch is connected.
- Send a new test text.
If notifications still fail, update the phone operating system, Garmin Connect, and the watch software through the normal update process for your model. Recheck permissions after an update.
As a final software step, remove the watch from Garmin Connect, forget it in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, restart both devices, and pair again from Garmin Connect rather than only from the phone’s Bluetooth menu. Re-pairing is disruptive and should come after the notification, permission, privacy, and battery checks. Garmin forum guidance also recommends this removal-and-repair sequence for persistent smart-notification failures.
Do not factory-reset the watch as a first response. A reset can erase settings and is different from restarting or re-pairing.

Receiving texts is different from replying
A Garmin watch may display incoming text notifications without supporting replies. Garmin says many compatible devices can reply when paired with Android, while text replies are not available with Apple phones. Reply methods vary by model and may include preset responses, custom responses, or an on-watch keyboard.
Replies are sent through the phone and can be subject to normal carrier or plan limits and charges. A contact name containing an emoji or special character can affect reply functionality on some devices, but that does not necessarily prevent the incoming notification from appearing.

When to check model compatibility
“Garmin watch” covers many generations and product lines. Notification features, on-watch app controls, reply support, menu labels, and phone requirements vary by model, operating-system version, and Garmin Connect release. If every phone and connection check passes, consult the exact owner’s manual and Garmin support page for your model before assuming the hardware is defective.

Compatible models and compatible phone setups are therefore required; an ordinary Bluetooth Garmin watch should not be expected to receive SMS or iMessage independently when the phone is disconnected.
