Fast battery drain on a Samsung Galaxy Watch is usually caused by a power-hungry setting, weak LTE or Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS use, continuous health monitoring, a problematic app or watch face, incomplete charging, software activity, or an aging battery. The quickest reliable approach is to test those causes in order rather than disable everything at once.
Fully charge the watch with a compatible charger, restart it, install available updates, turn off Always On Display, temporarily disable LTE, switch to a simple Samsung watch face, reduce optional continuous monitoring, and compare battery life over one ordinary day. If it still loses most of its charge while idle, use Samsung Members diagnostics and consider service.
First, decide whether the drain is abnormal
There is no single “normal” battery percentage per hour for every Galaxy Watch. Runtime depends on the model, case size, LTE or Bluetooth connectivity, display settings, GPS workouts, health sensors, network conditions, software, and battery age.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Small case sizes generally have smaller batteries. LTE models can use substantially more power when they operate away from the phone, especially where cellular reception is weak. GPS workouts, bright displays, Always On Display (AOD), frequent notifications, music streaming, and continuous sensors can make daily charging normal.

Samsung’s published figures are controlled “up to” estimates, not guarantees. For example, Samsung lists the Galaxy Watch6 at up to 40 hours with AOD off and up to 30 hours with AOD on under its specified test conditions (Samsung’s Galaxy Watch6 specifications).
Battery capacity also varies considerably. Samsung’s 2026 interim report lists capacities ranging from 300 mAh for the 40 mm Galaxy Watch7 to 590 mAh for the Galaxy Watch Ultra. Those figures describe capacity, not guaranteed runtime. Watch8 and Watch8 Classic run Wear OS 6, while Watch7 and Watch Ultra use Wear OS 5 according to the same report. Older Tizen-based watches may have different menus and features.
Signs that the drain needs troubleshooting
- Battery life suddenly became much worse after an update, new app, watch face, eSIM activation, reset, or settings change.
- The watch loses most of its charge overnight despite modest settings.
- It loses power while idle or becomes unusually warm without intensive use.
- The percentage drops in large jumps, or the watch shuts down while showing substantial charge.
- The watch charges slowly, stops charging, or repeatedly disconnects from the charger.
A several-year-old lithium-ion battery may simply have lost capacity. Settings can reduce consumption, but they cannot restore physically degraded capacity.

The fastest one-day battery-drain test
Use this controlled test so you can identify the likely cause without changing every setting at once:
- Charge the watch fully with the original or model-compatible wireless charger.
- Clean and dry the watch back and charging puck, and confirm that the percentage is actually increasing.
- Restart both the watch and the connected phone.
- Update the watch, Galaxy Wearable, Samsung Health, and watch apps.
- Turn off Always On Display for 24 hours.
- If the watch normally stays near the phone, set mobile networks to Auto or disable mobile data temporarily.
- Use a simple Samsung-installed watch face without animated or frequently refreshing complications.
- Reduce optional continuous heart-rate, stress, and automatic workout monitoring.
- Record the starting and ending battery percentages, along with GPS workouts, calls, streaming, and periods away from the phone.
If battery life improves substantially, restore one feature at a time until the high-drain setting becomes clear. If there is little improvement, continue with diagnostics and hardware checks.
The biggest causes of Galaxy Watch battery drain
Always On Display and wake settings
AOD keeps the display available continuously instead of waking only when you raise your wrist or touch the screen. Samsung specifically recommends disabling AOD to extend Galaxy Watch battery life (Samsung support).
To test it, open Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings → Display → Always On Display and turn it off. The setting may also be available directly on the watch under Settings → Display.

- TRACK YOUR NIGHTS. OWN YOUR DAYS: Galaxy Watch9 gives you personalized recommendations and habit-building guidance with Advanced Sleep Coaching.⁶ Plus, Bedtime Guidance⁷ helps you find your optimal bedtime so you can wake up feeling refreshed.
If AOD is the main cause, you do not necessarily have to disable other features. Consider raise-to-wake or touch-to-wake, a shorter screen timeout, lower brightness, a simpler face, fewer animated complications, or a scheduled AOD period if your model supports it. Also test whether wrist-movement wake is activating repeatedly because of loose clothing or frequent hand movement.
LTE and weak cellular signal
LTE is often the first thing to test when drain is worst away from the phone. The watch may repeatedly search for service in buildings, rural areas, underground spaces, or other weak-signal locations. Standalone calls, messages, mobile data, and streaming also consume more power than ordinary Bluetooth-connected use.
In Galaxy Wearable, try Watch settings → Connections or Watch settings → Mobile networks, then set mobile networks to Auto or disable mobile data temporarily. Keep the watch near the phone for a day and compare the result.
Disabling mobile connectivity limits standalone calls, messages, streaming, and remote functions when the phone is not nearby. Do not permanently disable it if you depend on the watch for those functions; use this as a diagnostic test first. Samsung identifies extended LTE and Wi-Fi use as possible battery factors (Samsung’s battery-life guidance).
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and remote connection
Bluetooth is normally the preferred connection when the phone is nearby. Do not automatically turn Bluetooth off: doing so can break notifications and syncing or cause the watch to use a more power-intensive alternative.
Set Wi-Fi to automatic rather than forcing it on continuously, if that option exists. Turn it off only if you do not need remote connection or standalone network functions. Samsung notes that when remote connection is enabled and Wi-Fi is disabled, the phone and watch cannot remotely connect over Wi-Fi when Bluetooth is unavailable (Samsung support).
An unstable Bluetooth connection can also increase activity as the devices repeatedly reconnect. If drain began alongside connection warnings, restart both devices and check for updates before changing more settings.

GPS workouts and streaming
GPS is power-intensive, particularly during long outdoor workouts, in urban areas or forests with poor satellite visibility, and when the screen stays active. LTE streaming and music playback at the same time can increase consumption further.
- End paused or abandoned workouts.
- Check that a GPS activity has not remained active after exercise.
- Use phone-assisted location when appropriate.
- Download music to the watch instead of streaming over LTE.
- Use a workout power-saving mode if your model provides one.
- Compare a normal day without GPS against a workout day.
A substantial drop after a long GPS workout is not, by itself, evidence that the GPS hardware is defective.
Health sensors and automatic monitoring
Samsung identifies heart rate, stress, sleep, and related monitoring as settings that can reduce battery life. Potential contributors include continuous heart-rate measurement, continuous stress measurement, sleep blood-oxygen readings, skin-temperature measurements, snore detection, automatic workout detection, irregular-heart-rhythm monitoring, and frequent ECG or body-composition measurements.
For a diagnostic test, open Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings → Samsung Health, then review Heart rate, Stress, sleep-related options, and automatic workout detection. Where available, change continuous measurement to periodic or manual measurement.
A sensible compromise is to keep sleep tracking if you value it, while reducing less important daytime monitoring first. A loose fit or poor sensor contact may also cause repeated readings. Do not disable a feature that you rely on for medical or safety reasons without following your clinician’s instructions; Galaxy Watch health features are not substitutes for medical care.

A poorly optimized face or app can keep the processor active, refresh complications too frequently, poll weather or location data, synchronize in the background, or prevent low-power idle mode.
- Switch to a simple Samsung-installed watch face.
- Remove apps or faces installed or updated shortly before the drain began.
- Restart the watch.
- Test it for a normal day before reinstalling anything.
Samsung’s app troubleshooting guidance recommends updating apps and removing problematic apps when investigating smartwatch problems (Samsung support). Do not assume a particular third-party app is responsible without testing it on the watch.

Notifications, vibration, and interaction
Frequent notifications, repeated vibration, calls, voice use, and constant screen wake can add up. Review high-volume notification sources on the phone and watch, reduce unnecessary alerts, and check whether a stuck connection or app is repeatedly vibrating the watch.
Software updates and temporary post-update activity
After a major update, the watch may temporarily use more power while apps and services synchronize or optimize. That is a possibility, not an explanation to ignore persistent severe drain.
Install updates through Galaxy Wearable using Watch settings → Watch software update or, on some generations, About watch → Download and install. Also update Galaxy Wearable, Samsung Health, Google Play system components, and watch apps where available. Restart the phone and watch, then observe at least one ordinary usage cycle. If the problem persists across multiple cycles, continue troubleshooting.
Charging problems that look like battery drain
The watch may be consuming a normal amount of power but starting the day only partially charged. Check the charging system before blaming the battery:
- Clean and dry the back of the watch and charging puck.
- Use the original or exact model-compatible Samsung charging accessory.
- Reseat the watch and confirm the charging animation appears.
- Verify that the percentage continues to rise rather than repeatedly stopping.
- Try a known-good wall adapter and cable.
- Avoid charging immediately after a hot workout or in a hot environment.
- Stop charging and seek service if the watch becomes unusually hot.
Do not use a damaged or swollen device, open the watch, or attempt an unqualified internal battery replacement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check what is using power
Galaxy Watch power-use visibility is more limited than on many Galaxy phones. Check the battery percentage and estimated remaining time on the watch and in Galaxy Wearable, but do not expect every model or software version to provide a detailed per-app battery ranking.
Instead, look for clues: a continuously active screen, repeated vibration, connection warnings, a stuck workout, a recently installed face or app, unusual warmth, or drain that occurs only away from the phone. Samsung Members diagnostics can add battery, charging, sensor, connectivity, and software checks where supported.

Use Samsung Members diagnostics
Samsung Members diagnostics generally requires the watch to be paired with a compatible Samsung phone. Update Samsung Members, Galaxy Wearable, and the watch first.
- Connect the watch to the Samsung phone.
- Open Samsung Members.
- Open Support or Discover, depending on the app version.
- Select Diagnostics or Connected device diagnostics.
- Choose the battery test, then run relevant charging, Wi-Fi, sensor, software, location, or connection tests.
Labels and availability vary by country, model, carrier, and app release. Samsung says connected-device diagnostics can include battery status, sensors, Wi-Fi, official software, updates, touchscreen, speaker, microphone, vibration, wrist detection, wireless charging, location accuracy, notifications, and bezel checks where supported (Samsung Research).
A failed result is a strong reason to contact Samsung or an authorized service provider. A passed result does not prove the battery performs like new: diagnostics are not a laboratory measurement of remaining capacity.

From the phone, open Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings → Battery and device care → Power saving. Review the restrictions before confirming.
Depending on model and software, Power saving may disable AOD, restrict connectivity, simplify the display, or reduce performance. It is useful when you need emergency runtime and as a diagnostic comparison, but it is not necessarily the best permanent solution if it removes functions you use.
When a factory reset is justified
Reset only after updating, verifying charging, restarting both devices, testing AOD and connectivity, removing suspect apps and faces, and running diagnostics where available. Back up the watch through Galaxy Wearable first; a reset erases local data and requires setup again.
After resetting, test the watch as a new watch before restoring every app and watch face. If battery life is good in a clean setup, restore content gradually to identify what reintroduces the drain.
A factory reset can clear corrupted settings or software state, but it cannot repair a worn battery or permanent software defect. Samsung also cautions that a reset is not a permanent solution when an app or software problem will later be fixed by an update (Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance).
When to contact Samsung or replace the battery
Seek Samsung support or authorized service if the watch:
- Gets hot while idle.
- Shows a lifted screen or back cover, which may indicate swelling.
- Shuts down unexpectedly or the percentage jumps erratically.
- Will not charge reliably with a known-good compatible charger.
- Has suffered impact or liquid exposure.
- Continues losing most of its charge while idle after a clean reset.
- Fails Samsung Members battery, charging, or hardware diagnostics.
For an older watch with otherwise acceptable software and a clearly degraded battery, ask Samsung or an authorized provider whether battery service is available for that exact model and location. Repair availability and cost vary by region, warranty status, and model. Replace the watch only after confirming that hardware aging—not AOD, LTE, GPS, sensors, charging, or an app—is the actual cause.
