If your Galaxy Watch is not counting steps, first check whether the watch itself is missing them or Samsung Health is showing a delayed or differently sourced total. Short walks, restricted wrist movement, a loose or dirty watch, and phone-to-watch syncing can all look like a faulty pedometer. Samsung’s recommended check is a controlled walk of 50 continuous steps, followed by a brief wait for the count to update.
First, identify what is not counting
Check the Steps tracker on the watch, not just a watch-face complication or the phone’s combined total. A complication can lag behind the tracker, and the phone and watch may update at different times.
- No movement appears at first: Samsung says its step algorithm may wait until it detects 10 continuous steps. The display may take additional time to refresh, so a few steps may not show immediately. Samsung explains the delay and other step-count limitations.
- The watch count is lower than expected: A held-still wrist, unusual walking motion, loose fit, or normal variation may make steps harder to detect.
- The watch counts, but the phone does not: The issue may be the selected step source or a synchronization delay rather than step detection.
- The phone count rises, but the watch count does not: The phone may be supplying the visible steps. A phone total alone does not prove that the watch is detecting steps.
Step counters estimate movement; they are not laboratory-grade pedometers. Judge the watch by whether it consistently recognizes ordinary walking, not whether it matches a manual count on every movement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRun a controlled 50-step test
This is the quickest way to separate a display or sync issue from a possible tracking fault. Samsung recommends walking 50 steps in a straight path and checking whether the watch records them.

- Charge the watch enough that a low battery is not a confounding factor.
- Clean and dry the underside of the watch, then wear it snugly in its usual position.
- Open the watch’s Steps tracker and note the starting count. Avoid relying only on a watch-face complication or the phone’s combined total.
- Walk at least 50 uninterrupted steps along a straight path. Swing your arms naturally; do not repeatedly look down or hold your wrist, elbow, or shoulder unnaturally still.
- Wait briefly for the tracker to update. If the result is unclear, repeat the test once under the same conditions.
If the watch repeatedly records zero or an implausibly low number in this test, continue with the checks below. Samsung says service may be needed if the watch still fails to recognize the test correctly. See Samsung’s step-count troubleshooting guidance.
Check fit, sensor condition, and walking motion
The watch estimates steps using movement detected by its sensors. A loose watch can shift on the wrist, and dirt or moisture on the underside can interfere with consistent sensing. Wear it firmly enough not to slide, but do not overtighten the band. Keep the sensor area clean and dry, and do not wear the watch over clothing. Samsung lists loose fit and a dirty sensor among possible tracking problems (Samsung troubleshooting guidance).
Arm movement is part of the motion signal, so some everyday activities are harder to classify as walking. The watch may miss steps when you push a stroller, shopping cart, or lawn mower; carry a heavy object with the watch arm still; keep your hand in a pocket; or take very short, interrupted walks. This does not mean every step requires a pronounced arm swing. It means a constrained or unusual movement pattern can make detection less reliable. For a fair test, walk naturally with your arms free.

Environmental and skin conditions can also affect how consistently data is received. If the problem began after debris, water exposure, or physical damage near the sensor, follow the care guidance for your specific model and consider service if the controlled test still fails.
Restart the watch, then check for updates
A restart can clear a temporary software or sensor-service state, though it does not establish that hardware is repaired.
- Normal restart: Swipe down from the top of the watch screen, tap the Power icon, and choose the option to turn the watch off. Once it is off, hold the Home/Power key for about one or two seconds to turn it on again.
- Force reboot: If the watch is unresponsive, hold the Home/Power and Back keys together for about seven seconds, until “Rebooting…” appears. Button names and behavior can vary by model.
After restarting, repeat the 50-step test. Also check for updates on both devices. On the watch, look under Settings → Software update. In Galaxy Wearable, the typical route is Watch settings → Watch software update. Update Samsung Health and Galaxy Wearable through the relevant app store as well. Paths and update availability vary by watch, phone, region, and software release. Samsung recommends rebooting and checking updates as troubleshooting steps (Samsung support).

Check which step data Samsung Health is showing
Samsung Health can use step data from the phone and a connected wearable. If you want the combined total, Samsung’s current support instructions say to select All steps:
- Open Samsung Health on your phone.
- Open the Steps tracker.
- Tap More options (the three vertical dots).
- Tap Select step data to show.
- Choose All steps for the combined phone-and-wearable view.
Samsung Health is intended to summarize phone and connected wearable data without duplicating steps, but do not assume that every third-party integration will produce a perfect match. Menu names and placement can differ by app version, phone, and region; if the option is missing, look in the Steps tracker’s menu for step-source settings or check Samsung Health’s current support information. Samsung’s instructions for selecting step data and its developer documentation on step data explain the combined-source behavior.
For diagnosis, compare like with like: inspect the watch’s own Steps tracker to see whether the watch is detecting movement, then inspect the phone’s Samsung Health total to see whether it is receiving and displaying the data you expect.

Check the connection and permissions if the phone is stale
If the watch’s own tracker advances but Samsung Health on the phone does not, check that the watch is connected through Galaxy Wearable and that both apps are current. Reopen the apps and allow time for synchronization. If the connection is unreliable, Samsung’s watch-to-phone connection guide covers permissions, updates, reconnection, and related troubleshooting.
On the phone, review Settings → Apps → Samsung Health → Permissions and make sure relevant physical-activity or sensor permissions have not been denied. Exact permission labels vary with Android version and device.

Health Connect is only relevant if you use another app or service that exchanges health data. It is not required for ordinary Galaxy Watch step counting in Samsung Health. If you do use it, check Samsung Health’s Health Connect settings and confirm the necessary activity-data access is allowed. Galaxy Watch data reaches Health Connect indirectly through Samsung Health on the phone, rather than directly from the watch. Samsung documents the setup in its Health Connect FAQ. Location permission is not a general requirement for basic step counting; it may be relevant to route or location features.

If the failure coincides with a power-saving setting or background restriction, temporarily restore normal operation and test again. Do not assume every battery-saving mode disables steps; the question is whether it is delaying the phone’s synchronization or coinciding with the tracking problem.
Account for unusual or misleading readings
- Short walks: A brief trip may not meet the continuous-motion behavior that helps the algorithm identify steps. Use a sustained walk for testing.
- Vehicle travel: Vibration in a car or train can affect the step count, sometimes making it rise while you are riding. Do not use a vehicle ride to judge walking accuracy. Samsung notes this limitation.
- Several devices: A phone, watch, ring, or third-party service can all contribute data. Confirm the selected source before treating a mismatch as a watch fault.
- Floors versus steps: Floor count is a separate measurement with different limitations; it is not a direct test of step tracking.
- Stale complication: If the watch-face number looks frozen, open the Steps tracker itself before concluding the sensor has stopped.
Run diagnostics, then decide whether service is needed
Where available, use Samsung Members’ diagnostic tools to check the watch’s sensors. Diagnostic menus differ across models, so do not assume every Galaxy Watch exposes the same test. A failed sensor check is a reason to contact Samsung; an inconclusive result does not rule out an intermittent fault.
Request Samsung service if the watch repeatedly records zero during ordinary walking, fails the 50-step test after fit, cleaning, restart, and update checks, or has other motion-related features behaving abnormally. Physical damage, water exposure, or a problem that keeps returning after temporary fixes also supports getting it inspected. Samsung’s troubleshooting path recommends service when tracking remains faulty (Samsung support; Samsung Members sensor-test guidance).
Before a factory reset or repair, sync or back up important data. Resetting should be a last resort after the simpler checks, because it can erase settings and require pairing and setup again; it is not a guaranteed hardware fix. If you do reset, use the instructions for your exact model and software version, and confirm your data is backed up first. Repair availability and cost depend on model, damage, warranty, and region, so check Samsung’s local service options rather than relying on a universal price.
These steps reflect Samsung’s U.S. support guidance. Menus, features, supported devices, and service options can vary by country, watch generation, Android version, One UI Watch version, and Samsung Health release.
