If your Samsung Galaxy Watch is not recording sleep, first find out whether the watch failed to capture it or Samsung Health failed to show it. The usual causes are a depleted battery, poor sensor contact, Power saving mode, a watch–phone connection or sync problem, or software trouble. Compatible Galaxy Watches generally detect sleep automatically when worn; there usually is no separate recording switch to turn on. Try the checks below before unpairing or resetting anything.

Start here: check the watch and the phone separately

Open Samsung Health on the watch and look at Sleep. Then open Samsung Health on your phone, go to Home, pull down to refresh, and open the Sleep tile for the right date. Also open Galaxy Wearable and check that your watch is connected.

  • No sleep entry on either device: Focus first on battery, fit and sensor contact, Power saving mode, movement, and watch software.
  • Sleep appears on the watch but not the phone: This points more toward connection, synchronization, or app processing than failed overnight sensing. Reconnect and refresh before deleting or resetting anything.
  • Duration appears, but stages, details, or a score are missing: The watch may have captured only limited data, or the score may be unavailable for another reason. That does not by itself mean sleep tracking failed.
  • The record is partial or seems inaccurate: Check fit, battery, movement, and whether you got up or removed the watch during the night.

Samsung recommends checking the Galaxy Wearable connection and refreshing Samsung Health when sleep data is missing from the phone. Samsung’s troubleshooting guide also notes that sleep tracking can be affected by irregular sleep and frequent movement.

Try these low-risk fixes first

  1. Charge the watch before bed. Samsung’s Korean support guidance recommends at least 30% battery before sleep. That is a published recommendation, not a guarantee that every watch can record a full night at that level. Charge higher when practical, especially if the battery is aging or you use overnight measurements. Check whether the watch is shutting down before morning.
  2. Wear it snugly on bare skin. Position it slightly above the wrist bone, toward your elbow. It should stay in contact as you move, but not be so tight that it causes discomfort, numbness, or irritation. Clean and dry the watch’s underside and your wrist; avoid wearing it over clothing.
  3. Toggle Power saving mode. On the watch, go to Settings > Battery > Power saving mode, turn it on, wait briefly, then turn it off. Restart the watch before the next test night. Samsung says Power saving mode may limit sleep information. It also documents this toggle as a workaround for certain Wear OS watches running One UI 6.0, including Watch4, Watch5, Watch6, and Watch7 families. Treat that as a model- and software-specific fix, not a universal cure. See Samsung’s One UI 6.0 guidance.
  4. Reconnect and refresh. In Galaxy Wearable, confirm the correct watch is connected. If it is not, tap Connect and follow the prompts. Then open Samsung Health on the phone, go to Home, and pull down to refresh. Keep the phone and watch near each other while the data syncs.
  5. Restart both devices. Restart the watch and phone, then check Galaxy Wearable and Samsung Health again.

A Bluetooth disconnect does not prove the watch recorded nothing: local data may still be waiting to sync. Check both screens before unpairing or resetting.

If there is no sleep record anywhere

Check fit and sensor contact

A loose band can let the optical sensors lose contact while you sleep. The same can happen if the watch sits directly on the wrist bone, shifts during the night, or is obstructed by sweat, lotion, dirt, or residue. Tattoos, heavy hair, scars, and pressure from bedding can also make sensor readings less reliable for some people. Clean the sensor area, wear the watch in a stable position above the wrist bone, and try the same wrist and fit for several nights. Do not overtighten it to compensate.

If the rear sensor or its cover is cracked, or the watch has visible damage, software steps may not solve the problem; contact Samsung support for advice.

Consider what happened during the night

Sleep tracking estimates sleep from sensor data; it is not a direct measurement of consciousness. Restless sleep, frequent movement, a short nap, multiple sleep periods, an unusual sleeping position, or taking the watch off can produce a partial or unexpected record. Getting into bed is not necessarily the same as the watch detecting sleep. If Samsung Health asks you to confirm whether you were asleep during an uncertain period, answer as accurately as you can.

Check for overnight battery drain

If the watch reaches 0% or powers off overnight, it cannot finish recording. Charge it before bed and check its battery level in the morning. If it repeatedly loses charge, inspect the charging contacts and charger. As a test, you can temporarily turn off optional overnight measurements, such as blood-oxygen or skin-temperature tracking, to see whether battery drain changes; availability of these features varies by model and market.

If sleep is on the watch but missing in Samsung Health

  1. Open Galaxy Wearable and make sure the watch is connected.
  2. Open Samsung Health on your phone, go to Home, pull down to refresh, and revisit Sleep.
  3. Keep the phone and watch nearby for several minutes; analysis or synchronization may take time.
  4. Restart both devices and repeat the refresh.
  5. Update the watch, Galaxy Wearable, Samsung Health, and the phone’s software (see below).

If other watch data syncs but sleep does not, the issue may be specific to sleep analysis or app synchronization. Avoid clearing app data or resetting the watch until you have checked whether the local sleep record is still present.

If duration is present but the score or details are not

Missing sleep stages or a sleep score are not the same as a missing sleep session. Power saving mode, interrupted sensor contact, movement, or limited data can affect how much detail is available. Samsung also says a sleep score is provided only when the sleep data falls within the configured sleep target.

Update software and check phone settings

A software problem can affect recording, analysis, or syncing. Samsung has documented a sleep-tracking issue for some Wear OS watches running One UI 6.0, so an update-related problem is possible—but timing alone does not prove an update caused it.

  • Check for watch software updates in Galaxy Wearable.
  • Update Galaxy Wearable and Samsung Health through the store where each app is installed, such as Galaxy Store or Google Play.
  • Install available phone operating-system updates and watch for model-specific Samsung support notices.
  • On the phone, check Settings > Apps > Samsung Health > Permissions and allow relevant requested permissions if they were denied. Also review battery settings for Samsung Health, Galaxy Wearable, and Samsung Health Service; avoid aggressive background restrictions while testing.
  • Make sure the phone has adequate free storage and battery, and restart it if it has been running for a long time. Samsung notes that low phone memory or battery can interfere with health-data tracking or estimation.

Android and One UI menu labels vary by device and release. Permissions and background settings are secondary checks rather than a single universal Samsung fix.

Escalate without jumping straight to a reset

If the safe checks do not help over multiple nights, try clearing the cache for Samsung Health in the phone’s app settings, if that option is available. Cache clearing is less disruptive than clearing app data; do not select an option that deletes data unless you understand what it removes. Samsung Community support has also suggested reinstalling the app and sending an error report for persistent inaccurate tracking, but those are community recommendations, not a guaranteed fix. See the Samsung Community discussion.

When contacting Samsung through support or Samsung Members, include the watch and phone models, software and Samsung Health versions, when the problem began, which device shows the sleep record, and whether the issue is missing, partial, or inaccurate data. Screenshots and diagnostic information can help support narrow down the cause.

Unpairing and re-pairing—or a factory reset—should come later, not first. Before either step, back up watch content and health data where applicable, and verify that lower-risk checks have failed. A reset may help with a local software problem, but it cannot guarantee a fix for damaged hardware, compatibility limits, or a wider software issue.

Sleep tracking is not sleep-apnea detection

Basic sleep duration and stages, snore detection, and sleep-apnea risk detection are separate features and may have different setup steps and compatibility requirements. A missing basic sleep record is not fixed by configuring sleep-apnea detection, and ordinary sleep tracking cannot diagnose a sleep disorder. Samsung’s sleep-apnea instructions describe that feature’s separate requirements and limitations; it is not a diagnostic tool. If you have loud snoring, gasping, witnessed breathing pauses, or severe daytime sleepiness, seek medical advice rather than relying on watch data.

Compatibility varies by watch generation, phone, software, region, and feature. For example, Samsung’s Korean service guidance lists Samsung Health 6.24 or later and Android 11 or later for the sleep function described there, and says sleep coaching requires at least seven days of sleep data, including two weekend days. Those regional, feature-specific details should not be treated as universal requirements for every basic sleep record or Galaxy Watch.
