If your Samsung Galaxy Watch shows phone numbers instead of contact names, it usually cannot access or sync the phone’s contact data. First check whether the phone itself recognizes the name. If it does, check permissions and the Galaxy Wearable connection before considering a reset.
First, identify what is missing
These symptoms can have different causes:
- The watch’s Contacts list is empty or incomplete: check contact-account sync, the phone’s contact filter, and permissions.
- Contacts appear on the watch, but calls show numbers: check Phone permissions and whether the watch is directly connected to the phone.
- Only a few people appear as numbers: inspect those contact records and the numbers saved in them.
- Names disappear only when you are away from the phone: the watch may be using a remote Wi-Fi or LTE connection, where calling behavior depends on the model, service, and carrier.
- Messages show numbers instead of names: check the same contact and permission issues, but bear in mind that messaging features vary by watch and phone combination.
Samsung’s calling instructions show that supported Galaxy Watches use the Phone app to select saved contacts. The phone connection and available calling features differ between Bluetooth and LTE models.
1. Check whether the phone recognizes the name
Look up the contact in the phone’s Contacts app, or check the call in the phone’s Phone app. If the phone also shows only a number, troubleshoot the phone’s contact record first: the record may be hidden by a filter, stored in an account that is not syncing, duplicated, or saved with a different number from the one calling.

If the phone shows the correct name but the watch does not, continue with the watch checks below. Start with one affected contact. Confirm that its number is correct and that the record is available in the phone’s system Contacts app, not only inside a separate third-party app. A mismatch between the saved and incoming number is a useful possibility to check, especially when only one or two contacts are affected.

2. Check permissions on the phone and watch
On the paired phone, open Settings → Apps → Galaxy Wearable → Permissions. Allow Contacts and, if listed, Phone. Then return to the app list, open the installed Galaxy Watch Plugin or Galaxy Watch Manager Plugin, and check its permissions too.
Names and paths vary by Android and One UI version. If the app is not listed under the exact name above, look for the plugin associated with your watch. Android may also revoke permissions for apps it considers unused, so check them even if you allowed them during setup. Samsung’s instructions cover permissions for Galaxy Wearable and its watch plugin and the general app-permission controls.
Also check permissions on the watch. On a Wear OS Galaxy Watch, open Settings → Apps → Permission manager, or open the relevant app and its permissions. Allow Phone and Contacts for the Phone or Contacts app if they are listed as not allowed. Call logs may also be relevant on some software versions. Samsung notes that the screens vary by watch software; see its guide to managing Galaxy Watch app permissions.

3. Confirm contact sync and visibility on the phone
On a Samsung Galaxy phone, check the account that actually holds the missing contacts:
- Open Settings → Accounts and backup → Manage accounts.
- Make sure Auto sync data is on.
- Select the relevant Google, Samsung, Microsoft, or other account, then tap Sync account.
- Make sure Contacts sync is enabled.
- In the Contacts app, select All contacts rather than a single account or list.
Labels differ on non-Samsung Android phones and across software versions. The important point is that the contact must be available through the phone’s system Contacts provider; seeing it in an isolated app does not necessarily make it available to the watch. Samsung recommends checking both account-level contact sync and the All contacts view in its missing-contacts troubleshooting guide.
4. Check the Galaxy Wearable connection
Open Galaxy Wearable on the phone. If it displays Start, the watch is not paired through the app. If it says Disconnected from watch, check the connection. If it says Remotely connected to watch, the watch may be using Wi-Fi or mobile data rather than a direct Bluetooth link.

For a direct-connection test, keep the phone and watch near each other, turn Bluetooth on in the phone’s Settings → Connections → Bluetooth, and check Bluetooth on the watch under Settings → Connections → Bluetooth where available. Turn off Airplane mode on both devices. Also turn off Power saving and Watch only mode temporarily while troubleshooting.

A watch appearing in the phone’s Bluetooth menu alone is not proof that all Galaxy Watch synchronization is set up properly. Complete pairing through Galaxy Wearable. Samsung says contact synchronization requires a Bluetooth connection through Galaxy Wearable in its synchronization troubleshooting steps.
5. Restart, then update
Restart both the phone and watch, reconnect them through Galaxy Wearable, and leave them connected for several minutes. This is a low-risk way to refresh the connection and the watch’s Phone and Contacts processes without deleting data.

If the problem continues, check for available updates to the phone’s operating system, Galaxy Wearable, the watch plugin, the watch software, and the phone’s Phone and Contacts apps. Update paths vary by model, region, and software version, so use the update controls offered on your devices. Samsung’s sync troubleshooting guide includes restarting and software updates among its remedies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. If it happens only away from the phone
Test again with the phone nearby and the watch directly connected over Bluetooth. If names or calls work then but not when the watch is remote, the issue may be the remote connection or calling setup rather than contact sync alone.
Bluetooth models depend on the phone connection for phone-based calls. An LTE watch may make calls independently when it has active service, but that does not guarantee every calling or messaging feature will work remotely. Model, carrier, plan, and setup matter. Samsung’s guidance for Galaxy Watch7 and Watch Ultra calling and its call and text troubleshooting describe these connection qualifications. If independent cellular calling or activation is the problem, check with your carrier as well as Samsung.

7. Account for phone and watch compatibility
Supported Galaxy Watches can pair with some non-Samsung Android phones, but feature support depends on the exact devices. Do not assume that every feature works on every Android phone. Samsung provides a compatibility guide for Galaxy Watches and phones.
iPhone support also varies considerably by watch generation. Samsung says some messaging functionality is unavailable when a watch is paired with iOS or a non-Samsung Android phone; that limitation should not be treated as proof that all contact or calling features are unavailable. Check the specific watch’s compatibility information and the relevant messaging and remote-call limitations.
8. Re-pair only after the checks above
If the phone recognizes the names, permissions and account sync are enabled, and a direct Bluetooth connection still does not restore them, try reconnecting:
- Back up the watch in Galaxy Wearable if a backup option is available. Confirm important contacts are safely stored in the phone’s account or cloud service.
- Remove or unpair the watch through Galaxy Wearable, then restart the phone.
- Pair the watch again through Galaxy Wearable, not only through the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- Approve the requested permissions and test the Contacts and Phone apps before restoring optional apps or settings.
Factory-resetting the watch is a last resort. A reset can erase watch data and settings, and will not fix a phone-side contact filter or a disabled permission. Back up first, and follow Samsung’s sync and reconnection guidance if you need to reset.
Quick diagnosis
| Symptom | Likely place to look | First check | If it continues |
|---|---|---|---|
| Watch Contacts list is empty | Permissions, account sync, or contact visibility | Enable phone/plugin and watch Contacts permissions; select All contacts | Restart, update, then re-pair |
| Names are missing only on calls | Phone permission or connection | Test near the phone over direct Bluetooth | Check Phone permissions and compatibility |
| Only some people appear as numbers | Individual contact record or account | Check the saved number and account in the phone’s Contacts app | Confirm the record is visible under All contacts |
| Names work nearby but not remotely | LTE, Wi-Fi remote connection, or carrier limitation | Check whether Galaxy Wearable says Remotely connected | Verify watch model, active service, and carrier support |
| It works briefly after restarting, then fails again | Permission, background restriction, or software issue | Recheck permissions and power-saving settings | Update apps and watch, then re-pair if needed |
When to contact support
Contact Samsung Support if the phone displays the correct names, the relevant phone and watch permissions are allowed, the watch is paired through Galaxy Wearable, and the problem remains after restarting, updating, and re-pairing. Contact your carrier if the issue is specifically independent LTE calling, activation, or remote connectivity. When you ask for help, note the watch model, phone model, whether the watch is Bluetooth or LTE, and whether the failure occurs while connected nearby or only when remote.
