Yes—the aluminum GPS-only Apple Watch Series 10 is officially slightly heavier than the GPS + Cellular version. The difference is 0.7 grams for the 42mm model and 1.1 grams for the 46mm model. These are case weights, excluding the band.
That does not mean GPS hardware is heavier than cellular hardware, nor that the GPS-only watch has a larger battery or better GPS. Apple has not published a component-by-component explanation. The strongest official clue is the Series 10’s redesigned metal back, which integrates the antenna into the watch housing.
The exact Series 10 weight difference
| Aluminum case | GPS-only | GPS + Cellular | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 42mm | 30.0g | 29.3g | GPS-only is 0.7g heavier |
| 46mm | 36.4g | 35.3g | GPS-only is 1.1g heavier |
Apple lists these figures in its Series 10 technical specifications, and the difference is also reflected on Apple’s comparison page. Relative to the cellular versions, the GPS-only models are approximately 2.4% heavier at 42mm and 3.1% heavier at 46mm.
Because Apple is measuring the case rather than the complete watch, the difference is smaller than the weight variation introduced by many bands. Band material, band size and case material will usually matter more to the feel on the wrist.

Is Apple’s specification a mistake?
It does not appear to be a simple typo. Apple consistently lists the GPS-only model as heavier at both case sizes and repeats the figures across more than one official page.
There is still no public bill of materials explaining the missing grams. Rounding or manufacturing tolerances could contribute to a small difference, but the systematic 0.7g and 1.1g gaps indicate that Apple is reporting different model-specific assemblies. The safest conclusion is that the figures are intentional, while the precise engineering explanation remains undisclosed.
What changed in the Series 10 design?
Series 10, introduced in September 2024, is nearly 10% thinner than the Series 7, Series 8 and Series 9 designs while retaining Apple’s stated 18-hour battery rating. Apple also redesigned the back of the watch. According to its Series 10 introduction, the metal back integrates the antenna into the housing, combining what had previously been separate layers.

That matters because the GPS and GPS + Cellular watches are not simply the same watch with an LTE modem added to one version. They can use different antenna arrangements, back assemblies and internal layouts within the thinner Series 10 design.
Why might the GPS-only model be heavier?
The best-supported explanation is that the two connectivity versions use different complete internal assemblies. Possible contributors include:
- Different antenna and radio layouts;
- Different back or antenna assemblies;
- Variation in shielding or structural components;
- Different brackets, flex cables or board layouts; and
- Space and weight optimization specific to each connectivity configuration.
Apple’s antenna-in-the-housing statement makes the back assembly an important clue, but it does not identify the exact part or parts responsible for the extra 0.7g or 1.1g. The cellular model is therefore not necessarily lighter because its cellular hardware weighs less. More accurately, the complete cellular watch assembly is engineered differently and ends up marginally lighter.

What the weight difference does not prove
- It does not prove that GPS hardware is heavier than cellular hardware. Apple has not published such a comparison.
- It does not prove that GPS-only has a larger battery. Apple has not documented that claim.
- It does not indicate a better GPS receiver. Both versions provide GPS functionality, and Apple does not identify the GPS-only model as having superior positioning hardware.
- It does not mean the cellular watch is physically the same inside. Identical headline dimensions do not guarantee identical internal construction.
Both aluminum versions are 9.7mm thick and available in 42mm and 46mm sizes. The titanium Series 10 models are different comparisons altogether: Apple lists them at 34.4g for 42mm and 41.7g for 46mm, and titanium configurations are GPS + Cellular.
Is the weight difference noticeable?
A 0.7g to 1.1g case difference is extremely small. It is unlikely to be a useful deciding factor, especially once the band is attached. Choosing the smaller case, a lighter band or aluminum instead of titanium will have a more meaningful effect on total weight.
The practical choice should be based on connectivity, not the scale reading.
GPS-only versus GPS + Cellular
Choose GPS-only when your iPhone is usually nearby
The GPS-only Series 10 can independently record distance, pace and route information during supported workouts using its built-in GPS. For calls, messages and notifications, it generally relies on a nearby iPhone through Bluetooth or on Wi-Fi.
It is the sensible option if you mainly want health tracking, workouts, timers, notifications, music control and GPS recording without paying for a watch cellular plan.

With an active compatible plan, the cellular model can support calls, messages, notifications, streaming and other connected services away from the iPhone. It is especially useful for phone-free running, cycling, swimming, errands and family use.

Apple Watch For Your Kids also requires a GPS + Cellular model. However, cellular hardware alone does not provide ordinary cellular service: you need an eligible carrier and plan, and availability varies by country, carrier and account type. Apple notes that prepaid and some older accounts may not be supported. Check Apple’s carrier and cellular-support page before buying.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Important cellular limitations
- A cellular model can cost more upfront and may add a recurring monthly charge.
- There is no single Apple Watch cellular configuration that works universally worldwide. Country, model, carrier and roaming support matter.
- Emergency calling availability can differ by situation and region; it should not be treated as a substitute for an active plan everywhere.
- The GPS-only model is not completely offline: GPS workouts can work independently, while many communication features require an iPhone or Wi-Fi.
Apple’s Series 10 buying information also requires an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18 or later. Apple Watch is compatible only with iPhone.
Should you buy a Series 10 in 2026?
Series 10 is no longer Apple’s newest mainstream Apple Watch generation, so new-stock availability and configuration choices may vary. A remaining or certified-refurbished Series 10 can make sense when its price is substantially below a current model, but compare the total cost rather than focusing on the tiny case-weight difference.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Series 10 GPS: Best when the iPhone is normally nearby and you want to avoid cellular-plan costs.
- Series 10 GPS + Cellular: Best for phone-free workouts, family use and independent connectivity, provided your carrier supports it.
- Certified refurbished Series 10: Potentially better value, but stock and configurations are limited.
- A newer Apple Watch: Better suited to buyers who want current-generation hardware and longer product availability.
Use Apple’s official purchase page and carrier-support information to verify current pricing, availability and plan compatibility. Do not compare a GPS-only aluminum watch with a titanium cellular watch as though connectivity were the only difference.
Bottom line
The GPS-only aluminum Apple Watch Series 10 really is slightly heavier: 30.0g versus 29.3g at 42mm, and 36.4g versus 35.3g at 46mm. Apple confirms the figures and says Series 10 uses a redesigned metal back with the antenna integrated into the housing. That strongly suggests different internal and antenna construction, but Apple has not disclosed the exact component-level reason for the reversal.
The difference is too small to guide a purchase. Choose GPS-only to avoid cellular costs when your iPhone is nearby; choose GPS + Cellular when independent connectivity is worth the added hardware and service expense.
