If your Fitbit app is not showing steps, the tracker usually has not permanently lost them. The most common explanations are a delayed sync, blocked Bluetooth or Nearby Devices access, battery-saving restrictions, an account mismatch, or a problem with a connected service such as Health Connect or Apple Health.

First determine where the count is missing: on the Fitbit itself, in the Fitbit/Google Health app, or only in another health app. That single check tells you which troubleshooting path to follow.

Quick fix: force a sync before changing anything

  1. Keep the Fitbit within a few feet of your phone.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth.
  3. Open the Fitbit or current Google Health app.
  4. Open the Today tab.
  5. Pull down on the screen to refresh.
  6. Wait for synchronization to finish, then check the device connection screen for the last synced time.

Fitbit says devices normally synchronize throughout the day and when the app is opened while the device is nearby. A step total visible on the tracker can therefore remain absent or outdated in the app until the phone reconnects. See Google’s synchronization guidance.

If the step tile itself is missing, look for the dashboard customization or edit control and restore the steps tile. Labels and controls can differ between app releases. A missing tile is a display-layout issue; it does not prove that the underlying data is gone.

Step 1: Find out where the steps disappeared

What you see Most likely area to investigate
Steps appear on the Fitbit but not in the app Device-to-phone synchronization, Bluetooth, permissions, or background restrictions
Steps appear in the Fitbit app but not in Health Connect, Apple Health, Google Fit, or another service Sharing permissions, integration settings, or source priority
Steps are missing on both the device and the app Device recording, firmware, wear position, date/time, account setup, or hardware
The count is present but the steps tile is absent Dashboard customization or a stale app display

Old step totals, failed manual refreshes, a phone-disconnected indicator, missing notifications, an incorrect device time, sync errors, and delayed sleep or exercise data all point toward a broader connection problem. Google lists these as common signs of unsuccessful synchronization on Android and iPhone.

Step 2: Fix Android connection and background settings

Android phones can stop a wearable app from syncing when permissions, background data, or battery management are restricted. The exact labels vary between Pixel, Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, and other phones, so use the general setting names below as a guide.

Allow Nearby Devices

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then select Fitbit or the current Google Health app.
  3. Tap Permissions.
  4. Allow Nearby Devices.

On Android 12 and later, Nearby Devices access can handle Bluetooth discovery and synchronization without necessarily requiring continuous GPS location access. Older Android versions may require Location Services for Bluetooth scanning. GPS workouts, maps, and weather can have separate location requirements. Do not assume that continuous location access is always needed simply to sync steps. See Google’s Bluetooth and location guidance.

Allow background data

Try Settings > Apps > Fitbit/Google Health > Mobile data & Wi-Fi or Mobile data usage. Turn on Background data and, if available, Unrestricted mobile data usage.

Remove battery restrictions

Open Settings > Apps > Fitbit/Google Health > App battery usage. Allow background usage and select Unrestricted, where that option exists. Also temporarily disable Battery Saver, Power Saving Mode, or Data Saver, or add the app to the relevant unrestricted-app list. Google identifies background-data and battery limitations as causes of automatic-sync failures; see background-sync settings and power-saving guidance.

Step 3: Fix iPhone connection settings

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth and confirm Bluetooth is enabled.
  2. Check the Fitbit app’s Bluetooth permission in iPhone Settings.
  3. Keep the tracker close to the phone while syncing.
  4. Install available updates for iOS and the Fitbit app.
  5. Temporarily turn off Low Power Mode if background behavior remains unreliable.

If Bluetooth appears stuck, turn it off in Settings, wait about 10 seconds, and turn it back on. Then restart the Fitbit, reopen the app, and try another manual sync. Using the Bluetooth control in Settings is preferable for this troubleshooting step to relying only on Control Center. Google’s iPhone sync guidance also recommends resetting Bluetooth and updating the phone, app, and device.

Step 4: Restart both devices

Restarting is safer than immediately removing the Fitbit or resetting it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Force-close the Fitbit/Google Health app.
  2. Restart the phone.
  3. Restart the Fitbit using the instructions for your exact model.
  4. Open the app and attempt a manual sync.

Do not use one universal button combination: restart procedures differ between Fitbit trackers and watches. Use Google’s model-specific troubleshooting and reset guidance.

Step 5: Update the phone, app, and Fitbit

Check separately for updates to the phone operating system, the Fitbit/Google Health app, and the Fitbit’s firmware. A normal app update comes from the relevant app store. A firmware update changes software on the wearable and may require the app to remain active or available in the background.

For firmware updates, Google recommends starting with at least 50% battery and prefers 75% or higher. An update may take up to an hour, so keep the device near the phone and connected throughout the process. These are current support recommendations, not universal hard requirements for every model.

Step 6: Re-pair the Fitbit safely

Only try re-pairing after the simpler fixes fail. Before doing so, keep the Fitbit powered on and attempt one final sync. If it contains activity that has never reached your account, do not erase it first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Force-quit the app.
  2. Turn off Bluetooth.
  3. In the phone’s Bluetooth settings, forget or unpair the Fitbit.
  4. Reopen the Fitbit/Google Health app.
  5. Set up the device again from inside the app.

Do not begin setup from the phone’s ordinary Bluetooth menu. Google warns that operating-system-level pairing can leave the app without the correct setup relationship. Leaving an old pairing in place can also interfere with a clean reconnection. Re-pairing removes local connection state; it is not a backup method, so unsynchronized activity may still be at risk.

Step 7: Clear the app cache or reinstall it

Android

After reconnecting, try Settings > Apps > Fitbit/Google Health > Storage & cache > Clear cache. Menu names vary by manufacturer. Clearing cache is different from clearing storage: avoid deleting app data unless you understand the consequences.

iPhone

iOS generally does not offer the same manual cache-clearing control. Reinstalling the app is the functional equivalent, but do it only after the Fitbit has been properly forgotten in Bluetooth settings and you know the correct account credentials. Reinstalling cannot recover activity that never synchronized, and it can create a new problem if you sign into the wrong account.

Steps appear in Fitbit but not another health app

Do not troubleshoot Health Connect, Apple Health, Google Fit, or another destination until the Fitbit app itself shows the current count.

Check the Google Account, date, and update timing

Google’s current documentation says Fitbit users are expected to use a Google Account. It states that Fitbit-account access ended after May 19, 2026, and that users who had not migrated could download or delete data before July 15, 2026. Those dates are time-sensitive; consult Google’s current account guidance if your history appears missing.

Verify that you are signed into the intended Google Account, that the device is connected to that same account, and that you have not accidentally switched to a new or empty profile.

Also check the selected date in the app and the device’s date and time. A firmware update performed around midnight can, in some cases, assign a count to the wrong day. If steps seem to have disappeared after an update, check the adjacent calendar date and whether the problem began immediately after the update.

When the Fitbit itself is not recording steps

If the device and app both show zero or an implausible count, confirm that it is powered on, responsive, and worn correctly and consistently. Restart it, check for firmware updates, and compare the problem with other measurements such as heart rate, sleep, or exercise.

Google Fitbit Inspire 3 - Midnight Zen/Black - Small and Large Bands
  • Inspire 3 is the tracker that helps you find your energy, do what you love and feel your best – all you have to do is wear it;
  • Compatible with Apple iOS 16.4 or higher and Android OS 11.0 or higher
  • Move more: Stay motivated with a Daily Readiness Score, Active Zone Minutes, all-day activity tracking and 24/7 heart rate, 40+ exercise modes, automatic exercise tracking, and reminders to move

  • Sleep better: Automatic sleep tracking, a daily detailed Sleep Score, smart wake vibrating alarm, and sleep mode help you improve your sleep quality[3]

If several metrics are missing, the issue may involve the device or firmware more broadly. If only steps are absent, wear position, device behavior, date/time, or the step sensor deserves closer attention. A tracker that cannot record steps locally, repeatedly loses connection, cannot be discovered after a clean setup, or repeatedly fails firmware updates should be referred to Fitbit support.

Factory reset: last resort only

A factory reset is appropriate only for a severely unresponsive device or a serious firmware/setup failure—not for a missing dashboard tile or an ordinary stale count.

Before resetting:

  • Attempt a final sync.
  • Confirm that you know the Google Account credentials.
  • Record the exact device model.
  • Understand that locally stored, unsynchronized activity may be permanently lost.
  • Follow the model-specific erase instructions.

Google warns that a reset can erase unsynchronized activity statistics, alarms, goals, and notification settings stored on the device. Do not promise that missing steps can be reconstructed: if the device never recorded the activity or the data never reached the account, recovery may be impossible.

Symptom-based troubleshooting table

Symptom Likely cause First action Escalate to
Fitbit shows steps; app shows yesterday’s total Sync failure Refresh Today with the Fitbit nearby Bluetooth, permissions, restart, then re-pair
App never updates in the background Battery or background-data restriction Allow background data and unrestricted battery use App cache or clean reinstall
Fitbit is missing from the phone Bluetooth or permission problem Check Bluetooth and Nearby Devices access Forget and set up inside the app
Fitbit is current but Health Connect is not Integration permissions or source priority Check read/write access and preferred source Reconnect the integration
Steps changed date after an update Midnight/date-boundary anomaly Check adjacent dates and device time Support if the pattern persists
Device itself records zero steps Wear, firmware, sensor, or hardware issue Restart and check for updates Fitbit support or replacement decision

When replacement is justified

Consider a replacement only after establishing that the problem is hardware-related. A new Fitbit will not fix a wrong Google Account, blocked permission, Bluetooth failure, background restriction, or Health Connect configuration. Replacement is more reasonable when the device no longer records steps locally, cannot be discovered after a clean reset of the connection, repeatedly fails firmware updates, has physical damage, or has an aging battery.

Review current devices at Fitbit’s official product page. A Google Pixel Watch may suit someone already invested in Android and Google services, but it is not a drop-in replacement for every Fitbit tracker and may differ in battery life, operating system, form factor, and features. Fitbit Premium is not required merely to display basic step totals; it is a separate service for additional coaching and insights. See Fitbit’s official Premium page for current information.
