Wear OS 5 drew a line between older watch faces and the new Watch Face Format (WFF). Watches launched with Wear OS 5 or later support WFF faces, so a legacy face may not install or transfer even if it worked on your previous watch. Google’s documentation now says WFF is required to install watch faces on all Wear OS devices as of January 2026. That does not mean every older face vanished from every watch at once: what still works depends on the watch, its software, the face’s format and whether a compatible edition exists.
What changed—and why it became noticeable in 2024
Wear OS 5 is based on Android 14 (API level 34), but the watch-face change is not simply an Android version issue. Google’s Wear OS 5 guidance says watches that launch with Wear OS 5 or higher support watch faces built with Watch Face Format, rather than older implementations using legacy watch-face APIs. The issue became visible to many buyers when Samsung introduced the Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra in July 2024 with Wear OS 5. Reporting at the time described older faces that were missing on the new watches, while faces could continue working on older watches that had not moved to Wear OS 5. Droid Life’s 2024 report
The platform rule has since broadened: Google’s WFF and app-quality documentation says WFF is required for installing watch faces on all Wear OS devices as of January 2026. Treat that as the current requirement for new installations, not proof that every already-installed legacy face stopped working on every existing watch at the same moment. What Watch Face Format is
Older watch faces could include executable rendering logic. WFF takes a different approach: a face describes its layout, resources and supported behavior declaratively, in XML, and the system renders it. A WFF package does not contain ordinary Kotlin or Java watch-face rendering code. The more constrained model is intended to make performance, battery behavior, compatibility and quality more predictable, though it also means developers may need to redesign features rather than simply repackage an old face. “Wear OS version” and “WFF version” are separate compatibility details. A watch’s OS sets a floor for which format versions and features it can support; a face built for a newer format may not run on an older watch.

These are minimum-version mappings, not a guarantee that every face works on every watch at or above the listed version. Specific features, device shape, listing compatibility and developer support can still matter. See Google’s WFF version guidance.

Google’s user guidance says unavailable faces may be incompatible or may not transfer during setup or restoration. A face can also be missing because it was delisted, is filtered for the particular device, lacks support for its screen or depends on a discontinued companion app. So a blank search result alone does not establish exactly why that face is absent. Check before you upgrade
- Write down the exact face names. Save the developer or publisher name too; similar names can refer to different products.
- Check the developer’s listing and support channel. Look for a WFF-compatible edition, recent updates and confirmation that it supports the watch you intend to buy.
- Check on the target device. Google Play filters faces by device compatibility. A listing visible on your phone does not guarantee the face can be installed on your paired watch.
- Confirm whether the face is standalone. If it depends on a phone app, account or cloud service, check that those still work; a watch-face migration alone may not preserve them.
- Save the appearance and settings you care about. Take screenshots of custom colors, layouts and complication choices. A face may transfer without preserving every setting.
- Do not count on backup as a compatibility fix. Google warns that some older faces may not transfer during restoration.
- Ask the developer if the face is important and no compatible edition is listed. Do this before buying or resetting a watch, not after discovering the face is gone.
When choosing a replacement face, check more than whether it says “Wear OS.” Confirm WFF compatibility and support for your exact watch, screen shape and desired complications. A visually similar face may not offer the same data, layout or customization, and elaborate always-on graphics or animation can affect battery use.
Can you get the old face back?
First, look for an updated edition from the original developer and install it through Google Play if it is offered for your watch. If Play says the face is incompatible or it is unavailable, Google does not offer an alternate Play Store download route for faces that fail its current standards. Sideloading an old APK is not a dependable workaround: installation may fail because of platform rules, packaging or signatures, unsupported legacy code, licensing, or a required phone companion app. It is not an officially supported way to restore a face that is incompatible with the watch.
Why developers need to migrate
A developer generally cannot make a legacy face compatible simply by changing its store listing. Migration to WFF can require translating programmable behavior into supported declarative elements and reworking complications, interactions, animations and data sources. The finished face must also be packaged and tested for relevant Wear OS versions and screen shapes. Google’s AndroidX documentation marks the older Wear Watchface APIs as deprecated in favor of WFF and says they are expected eventually to be removed. That makes a developer’s WFF migration the durable path for keeping a face available—not a promise that every older design can be reproduced feature for feature. AndroidX Wear Watchface release notes
Choose a new watch with your faces in mind
Do not assume that a watch is a safe upgrade just because it runs Wear OS or comes from the same brand. The Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra brought the issue to prominence, but WFF is a Wear OS platform requirement, not a Samsung-only rule. A Pixel Watch or another Wear OS model is not a guaranteed way to restore a legacy face either.
If one particular face is the reason you are keeping or replacing a watch, verify that the developer has a compatible WFF edition for the exact target model before purchase. Also check the companion app, complication data and customization options you rely on. If that face has no supported edition, decide whether an alternative is acceptable before upgrading: more capable hardware cannot make an incompatible face installable.
