Verdict: The Xiaomi Smart Band 8 remains a good cheap fitness tracker if you want a bright AMOLED screen, basic health trends, notifications and long battery life. It is not a good choice for serious runners, cyclists or hikers: the standard global model has no built-in GPS, no NFC and mixed measurement accuracy. In 2026, buy it only at a clearly lower price than newer Xiaomi bands and from a seller offering a dependable return policy and regional warranty.
The Band 8 launched in mainland China in April 2023 and reached global markets later that year. Xiaomi now lists newer Smart Band 9 and Smart Band 10 models, so its once-automatic “budget benchmark” status is now price-dependent.

Price and value in 2026
The Band 8’s value depends almost entirely on the price gap between it and newer models. Xiaomi Spain’s official store listed it at €39.99 when crawled in August 2026, but that is a Spain-specific observed price rather than a universal current price. Availability, taxes, shipping, warranty and condition vary by country.
Historical reviews listed the global model at $49.99/£49.99, but those figures should not be treated as current US pricing. Xiaomi has not consistently sold the Band 8 through an official US retail channel, making third-party seller reputation especially important.

Design, comfort and display
The Band 8 is a slim, lightweight tracker rather than a smartwatch. Its body measures approximately 48 × 22.5 × 10.99mm and weighs 27g with the supplied strap. That makes it comfortable for overnight wear and unobtrusive during walking or gym sessions.
It has a 1.62-inch AMOLED display with 192 × 490 resolution, up to 600 nits brightness, a 60Hz refresh rate, automatic brightness adjustment and always-on-display support. Scrolling feels unusually smooth for this price, and the display is large enough for notifications, timers and basic workout information. Strong sunlight can still make it difficult to read, and independent testing found occasional touch-recognition problems.

Its raised profile can catch on clothing, but the easy-detachable strap system is a meaningful improvement for people who want to change styles or replace a worn band. Confirm that replacement straps are specifically made for the Band 8; older Mi Band straps are not automatically compatible.
Battery life and charging
Xiaomi specifies a 190mAh battery, magnetic charging and approximately one hour for a full charge. Its headline claim is up to 16 days in typical use, falling to up to six days with the always-on display enabled.
Rank #2
Those are test-condition figures, not a guaranteed ownership result. Battery life can fall with AOD, frequent screen activation, high-frequency heart-rate monitoring, all-day SpO₂, advanced sleep monitoring, stress monitoring, many notifications, frequent workouts, repeated syncing and battery age. Heat and cold can also affect endurance.
The magnetic cable charges the band without removing the strap, but it is proprietary. Keep a spare or replacement cable in mind. Some power banks switch off when they detect the wearable’s very low current draw, so a band that appears not to charge may work normally from a wall adapter or another USB source. Xiaomi documents this issue for related bands.

Health tracking: useful trends, not medical data
The Band 8 can monitor heart rate, blood oxygen, sleep, REM-related sleep information, stress, breathing exercises, steps, calories, inactivity and menstrual-cycle information. Training and recovery metrics may vary with software version and region.
It is most useful when worn consistently to identify broad changes: whether activity is increasing, whether sleep timing is shifting or whether resting heart-rate trends look different over time. It should not be treated as a medical monitor. Blood-oxygen readings from a consumer wearable should not be used alone to make urgent medical decisions.
Fit matters. Wear the band snugly, about one finger-width above the wrist bone, with the sensor flat against the skin. Loose fit, movement, wet skin, incorrect orientation and poor sensor contact can reduce the quality of heart-rate, SpO₂ and sleep readings. Xiaomi specifically warns that fit, orientation and strap tightness affect these measurements.

Accuracy is the Band 8’s main weakness
Independent testing found some acceptable readings but also inconsistent step totals, unpredictable calorie estimates, variable heart-rate results and weak phone-assisted route data. Some sleep measures appeared more useful after extended use, but that does not establish that every measurement becomes dependable.

Workout tracking and GPS
Xiaomi provides a large selection of workout modes covering walking, running, cycling, swimming, gym sessions and general activity. That makes the Band 8 suitable for step goals, casual walks, reminders to move and uncomplicated gym workouts.
The standard Smart Band 8 has no built-in GPS. Route tracking depends on a paired phone, its location permissions and background operation. Carry the phone, allow the required permissions and compare the results with a known-good phone app or GPS device before trusting the data for training. Independent testing still found phone-assisted distance and route information unreliable.
The optional running clip can change how the band is worn for running-related features, but it does not add satellite GPS. For marathon training, trail running, cycling navigation, phone-free workouts or dependable pace and distance analysis, choose a device with onboard GPS.
Smart features and notifications
For a low-cost band, the everyday feature set is broad. It supports app and message notifications, incoming-call alerts, call rejection and preset replies, music controls, weather, alarms, stopwatch and timer functions, events and reminders, find-my-phone, camera control, phone silent-mode control, watch faces and some do-not-disturb synchronization.

- 16.5g lightweight design, 9.99mm slim body
- Up to 18-day battery life, 5ATM water resistance
- Upgraded all-round sleep and health monitoring
It is still a notification companion, not a wrist computer. Full message replies are unavailable, and event/calendar handling has limitations. Tech Advisor found that the events feature could not simply import an existing calendar in the way many users would expect.
Integration also depends on the phone. Quick pairing is limited to some Xiaomi phones and software versions, automatic DND synchronization has Android and device restrictions, and schedule synchronization differs between MIUI devices and iOS Calendar.
Compatibility and setup
The Band 8 uses the Mi Fitness app and Bluetooth 5.1 Low Energy. Xiaomi lists compatibility with Android 6.0 or later and iOS 12.0 or later. Compatibility does not mean feature parity: Xiaomi phones and Android devices may offer deeper integration than iPhones.
- Charge the band and install Mi Fitness from your phone’s official app store.
- Sign in or create a Xiaomi account if requested, then add the band from the device section.
- Approve Bluetooth, notification, background-activity and location permissions where required.
- Install available firmware updates.
- Configure wrist orientation, heart-rate frequency, sleep and SpO₂ monitoring, notifications, AOD or raise-to-wake, units, time format and privacy settings.
- Wear it snugly, approximately one finger-width above the wrist bone.
Menu names can change with the Mi Fitness version, phone operating system, region and firmware. If notifications stop arriving, check both Mi Fitness permissions and the phone’s battery-optimization settings.
Water resistance
The Band 8 is rated 5ATM for water resistance, not waterproofing. Xiaomi says it is suitable for swimming pools and shallow-water activities, but not diving, high-speed water sports, saunas, hot showers or hot springs. The touchscreen is not designed for underwater operation.

Resistance can deteriorate with age, impacts, chemicals, heat and seal wear. Swimming tracking also does not provide open-water GPS tracking. Dry the screen before using it and do not treat the 5ATM rating as permission for thermal-water or diving use.
Smart Band 8 versus the alternatives
Xiaomi Smart Band 9, Smart Band 9 Active and Smart Band 10
Xiaomi’s global catalogue now includes newer generations. Their hardware improvements may be incremental, but a newer band generally offers a longer remaining accessory and support window. If one costs only modestly more than the Band 8, it is usually the safer purchase.
Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Pro
The 8 Pro is larger and more watch-like, but its built-in GPS makes it the more logical Xiaomi choice for buyers who need independent route tracking. It is less discreet and more expensive, and it still is not a full smartwatch or dedicated sports watch.

The Amazfit Band 7 is a direct budget alternative with its own Zepp software ecosystem, long battery life and broad activity features. Choose it if it is substantially cheaper or you prefer Zepp. Choose the Xiaomi for its smooth 60Hz display and Band 8 strap system. Check current prices rather than relying on historical review-era figures.
Fitbit Charge 6
The Charge 6 belongs to a higher price category but is the more appropriate option for buyers who value built-in GPS, Google Maps, gym-equipment connectivity and stronger exercise tracking. It is not a like-for-like low-cost replacement, and its current price and service terms should be checked separately.
Garmin and dedicated sports watches
Choose a Garmin or another higher-end sports watch when you need dependable GPS, structured workouts, training load, recovery analysis, long-term sports data or more robust outdoor operation. Paying more is justified when training accuracy—not merely notifications and step counts—is the real requirement.
Who should buy the Xiaomi Smart Band 8?
- Buy it for steps, sleep trends, notifications, alarms and casual workouts.
- Buy it if a bright, smooth AMOLED display and very low weight matter.
- Buy it if you do not need phone-free GPS or contactless payments.
- Buy it if you are comfortable treating health data as approximate.
- Buy it only when it is clearly cheaper than newer Xiaomi equivalents.
Who should skip it?
- Skip it if you need built-in GPS or reliable cycling and hiking routes.
- Skip it if you train by pace, distance, heart-rate zones or structured workouts.
- Skip it if you need contactless payments or full notification replies.
- Skip it if you expect medical-grade readings.
- Skip it when an imported unit has unclear region, warranty, language or payment compatibility.
Final verdict
The Xiaomi Smart Band 8 is still an excellent cheap screen-and-battery bargain, but it is no longer the automatic budget benchmark. Its 1.62-inch AMOLED display, light design, extensive everyday functions and potentially long battery life remain compelling. Its lack of onboard GPS, absent NFC on the standard model and mixed accuracy testing define its limits.
In 2026, the right buying rule is simple: choose the Band 8 at a deep discount for casual wellness tracking; choose a newer Xiaomi band when the price gap is small; and choose the Band 8 Pro, Fitbit Charge 6 or a dedicated sports watch when GPS and training reliability matter.
