Verdict: The xWatch EX16 was an unusually inexpensive 2017 wearable: a button-operated digital watch with approximate step counting, phone notifications and a claimed months-long button-cell battery. In 2026 it is mainly a historical curiosity. The original $19.99 listing is out of stock, app support is uncertain, compatibility claims conflict, and there is no verified GPS or heart-rate sensor. Buy one only if it is nearly free, returnable and tested with your phone.
What the xWatch EX16 is—and is not
The EX16 (also called the EX16 Smart Sport Watch) is best understood as a basic Bluetooth activity watch, not an Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch, Fitbit Versa or modern GPS fitness watch. It combines a round low-power display, four physical buttons, a TPU case and band, Bluetooth 4.0, a pedometer and limited phone alerts. Design, controls and everyday use
Gizmochina described acceptable plastic construction, comfortable wear overall and a case that felt bulky on a small wrist. The upper-left button activates the backlight; the other buttons handle navigation, modes and Bluetooth functions. Physical controls are the EX16’s most practical design advantage: they are easier to operate while moving than a tiny touchscreen. In exchange, the low-power display provides less color, information and visual polish than a current tracker.

The watch can show time and date, run a stopwatch and set an alarm. Its activity screens provide steps, a distance estimate and a calorie estimate. Distance is not GPS distance, and calorie figures are algorithmic estimates rather than physiological measurements. They should not guide medical, training or nutrition decisions.
What the original $19.99 review actually established
The 2017 reviewer handled the device, judged the construction acceptable, noted the bulky fit on a small wrist and reported that the advertised functions worked during the review period. Those are hands-on observations from that period, not independently reproduced accuracy measurements. Read the original review
At that price, the value proposition was narrow but understandable: a reader could get a watch, approximate pedometer, stopwatch and notification display without regularly charging a lithium-ion smartwatch. It was never equivalent to a training watch with route tracking, heart-rate zones, workout export or a broad app ecosystem.

Battery life: impressive claim, important caveat
Historical coverage repeatedly cites roughly eight months of normal standby and up to 12 months in power-saving mode. Retail pages sometimes reduce that to “up to one year.” Standby is not the same as active use: Bluetooth activity, notifications, alarms, backlight use and battery age can shorten it. A CR2032 installed years ago may be empty even if the watch sat unused.
The button-cell design is the EX16’s one genuinely unusual advantage over rechargeable trackers. However, the sources do not establish a current replacement procedure or whether opening a particular unit compromises its water seals. Treat any second-hand unit as a possible battery replacement project.
Phone notifications and the companion app
Historical descriptions report incoming-call alerts, SMS alerts and notifications from Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, plus a remote-camera function. These alerts are relays from a phone; the watch cannot operate independently, install modern apps or guarantee full message threads and replies.

- Install or open the XWatch companion application.
- Enable Bluetooth on the phone.
- In the app, open Equipment Management.
- Select the detected “XWatch” device and complete pairing.
- Allow synchronization of time, date and activity data.
- Use the app’s remote-camera control if it is supported.
- For iPhone, follow the manual’s additional Bluetooth cancellation/disconnection step when disconnecting the watch.

If pairing fails
- Confirm that the watch has a live battery.
- Delete old XWatch Bluetooth entries from the phone.
- Pair through the app’s device-management screen rather than only through system Bluetooth settings.
- Grant Bluetooth, notification and background-operation permissions.
- Keep the devices close during pairing.
- Try a spare older Android phone if a current operating system is the problem.
- If the app is absent from the relevant app store, treat that as a compatibility failure. Do not install random APKs or unofficial apps from untrusted sites.
Historical listings disagree: GizTop describes Android compatibility, a Polish report says Android-only, while Greek retail material claims Android and iOS. GizTop’s listing Tabletowo coverage Because no current official support documentation is identified here, compatibility depends on the exact revision, app, phone and operating-system version. Test before paying.

Fitness tracking: useful approximation, not measurement
The EX16 reports steps, estimated distance and estimated calories, but the available review supplies no comparison against a measured route, reference pedometer, GPS device or validated calorie calculation. Step totals may be useful for a rough daily indication. Distance is likely derived from steps and user settings, and calories are model-generated estimates. There is no verified heart-rate data.
Runners and serious athletes should avoid it: it cannot provide verified GPS routes, pace, elevation, heart-rate zones or dependable workout exports.

IP67, 5ATM and a casual “50 meters” phrase are not interchangeable proof of safe swimming. Seals also age, especially in a stored or opened second-hand watch. Do not recommend the EX16 for swimming, diving, hot showers, seawater or any activity where water damage would matter.
Should you buy an EX16 today?
Buy only if all of these are true
- The price is very low and the seller offers returns.
- You want a simple time-and-step display, physical buttons and minimal charging.
- The watch powers on and has a usable battery.
- You can test the exact XWatch/Sports+ app and phone combination before the return window closes.
- You accept approximate data and possible obsolescence.
Avoid it if you need
- Reliable current Android or iPhone support.
- GPS, heart-rate, sleep or medical measurements.
- Swimming or water-sport tracking.
- Modern messaging apps, replies, firmware updates or warranty support.
- Accurate training data, exports or an actively maintained ecosystem.

Readers who need supported software are better served by a current tracker, even if it costs more and requires charging.

Do not choose a modern replacement expecting the EX16’s months-long button-cell endurance. That remains its only compelling differentiator, provided the individual watch and app still function.
Final assessment
2017 value: strong within its narrow ultra-budget category. It bundled a watch, basic activity estimates, physical controls and phone alerts at an unusually low historical price.
2026 purchase value: weak by default. Uncertain app longevity, conflicting phone support, missing sensors, inconsistent water claims and out-of-stock original supply outweigh the low price for most buyers. Consider one only as a cheap, tested curiosity—not as a dependable modern smartwatch, medical device or swim watch.
