Yes. A 2014 demonstration showed Game Boy Color games running on a Samsung Galaxy Gear Live smartwatch. It used the VGB emulator and a separate MOGA Bluetooth controller, so it proved that the watch could run the software—not that a watch was a convenient, self-contained handheld console. Compatibility with current Wear OS watches is unverified.
What the 2014 demonstration showed
On October 13, 2014, 9to5Google reported that Corbin Davenport had run the VGB emulator on a Samsung Galaxy Gear Live running Android Wear. The setup used a MOGA controller for physical input. The games shown included Pokémon Gold, Pokémon Crystal, Tetris and Super Mario Bros. (9to5Google’s original report; the demonstration video).
The report described Pokémon Gold as appearing to run without noticeable lag. That is an observation of the demonstration, not a measured frame-rate or latency test. The report does not provide technical logs, a full installation transcript, or a compatibility test across multiple watches.
What “playing on a watch” meant
The watch supplied the display and computing platform; the MOGA controller supplied the buttons. In other words, this was closer to a tiny wearable screen paired with a separate gamepad than a wristwatch that could comfortably handle a game on its own. The contemporary report does not identify the controller’s exact model or document its pairing steps and button mapping.

The distinction matters because Android Wear did not natively include Game Boy Color support. The demonstration relied on an emulator, and the games were shown running through that software. It establishes that this particular setup worked—not that every Android Wear watch supported the emulator or that every game would behave the same way.
Why the experiment was possible—and why it was awkward
Game Boy-era games were designed for modest hardware, making them plausible candidates for an emulation experiment on a smartwatch. But technical possibility is not the same as a good gaming experience. A watch’s display is very small, and on-screen controls would take up valuable space and can obscure gameplay. A separate controller makes button input more practical, but it also makes the setup less portable and less like playing on a watch alone.

The original report did not measure battery life, heat, sustained performance, storage needs, or save reliability. Those are unknowns, not demonstrated failures. Still, they are sensible factors to check before treating an old proof of concept as a dependable way to play for a long session.

The 2014 result does not establish compatibility with current Wear OS devices. Android Wear was the platform name at the time; Wear OS is the later branding. Changes in watch hardware, Android versions, processor architecture, app packaging, permissions, storage access and controller support can all affect whether an old emulator—or any emulator—will install and work.

The original report points readers to a separate guide but does not provide a complete, reproducible installation procedure. Treat any attempt to recreate the setup as a device-specific tinkering project, not a supported feature or a guaranteed how-to. Before proceeding, check:
- Installation: Can the specific watch install an emulator compatible with its operating-system version and processor architecture?
- Storage and files: Is there enough accessible storage for the emulator and game files, and can the emulator read their formats?
- Controller: Does the watch support pairing with the controller and its input profile? Can the emulator map its buttons?
- Usability: Can you orient the display and use the controls without covering the game or making play uncomfortable?
- Reliability: Do sound, saves and performance remain acceptable during a sustained session, and how quickly does the watch battery drain?
If installation fails, possible causes include an incompatible app build, unsupported architecture, installation restrictions or limited storage. If a game will not load, check that the file is in a format the emulator supports and that the emulator supports that Game Boy variant. If a controller will not pair, other Bluetooth connections or the watch’s controller-profile support may be factors. The 2014 report does not verify a modern fix or menu path for any of these problems, so check documentation for the exact watch, emulator and controller rather than relying on instructions for the Galaxy Gear Live.

Use game files you are entitled to use
An emulator and a game file are separate things. Use only files you are legally entitled to use, and do not assume that downloading a commercial game from an unofficial site is lawful. Copyright and rules about personal backups vary by jurisdiction; the 2014 demonstration report does not address those questions.
The practical verdict
As a historical demonstration, the answer is yes: a Galaxy Gear Live ran VGB with games including Pokémon Gold, alongside a separate MOGA controller. As a present-day recommendation, the evidence goes no further. It does not show that modern Wear OS watches can reproduce the setup, that play is comfortable without external controls, or that the experiment is reliable for long sessions. Consider it a striking bit of smartwatch tinkering, not a reason to buy a watch as a Game Boy replacement.
