If you mostly use your Apple Watch for the time, notifications and Activity rings, watchOS 26 gives you much more practical value. The best features remove small phone checks, provide useful health context and add safety options that are worth configuring before you need them.
The exact feature set depends on your Apple Watch model, watchOS version, paired iPhone, country, language and, for some functions, cellular service or Apple Intelligence support. The examples below assume watchOS 26. Check Apple’s feature-availability list for your model and region.
Quick guide to the most useful features

| Find My and iPhone ping | Locate a phone, item or consenting person | Find Devices or Find Items | Requires supported devices, accounts and permissions |

1. Start the day with Sleep Score and Sleep tracking
Sleep tracking is most useful as a routine rather than a single-night verdict. In watchOS 26, Sleep Score summarizes sleep duration, bedtime consistency and interruptions. You can see it in the Sleep app, Smart Stack or as a watch-face complication.
- Open the Sleep app on Apple Watch.
- Follow the setup prompts, set a sleep schedule and choose a sleep-duration goal.
- Wear the watch overnight, then review duration, stages, consistency and Sleep Score the next morning.
Charge before bed or during your morning routine. If battery is short, consistent tracking on most nights is more useful than trying to collect perfect data every night. Sleep Score is a consumer wellness metric, not a clinical diagnosis. Sleep-apnea notifications, where offered, have separate model and regional requirements.

2. Check Vitals for changes from your normal
Vitals compares overnight measurements with your typical range. Depending on model and availability, it can show heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, blood oxygen and sleep duration. Open Vitals in the morning and tap a metric for context.
An outlier can reflect illness, medication, alcohol, travel, stress or unusual exercise. Apple says the app may notify you when several metrics are outside your usual range and offer possible contextual factors. Treat that as a prompt to pay attention, not proof that you are ill or healthy.
For Apple Watch models bought in the United States on or after January 18, 2024 with part numbers ending in LW/A, Blood Oxygen is unavailable in Vitals. See Apple’s health feature guide for current details.
3. Make notifications less annoying
The watch works best when it filters interruptions instead of mirroring every phone alert.

- On iPhone, open Watch > My Watch > Notifications.
- Turn off alerts that do not need immediate attention and configure important apps individually.
- Use Watch > My Watch > Focus to control which Focus modes are mirrored.
On Series 9, Series 10 and Ultra 2, watchOS 26 adds a wrist-flick gesture that can dismiss notifications and incoming calls, silence timers and alarms, and return to the watch face. Double Tap performs a context-sensitive action on supported models; neither gesture replaces sensible notification settings.
4. Let Smart Stack surface what matters
From the watch face, turn the Digital Crown upward or swipe up to open Smart Stack. Scroll through widgets and tap one to open its app. Remove widgets you never use and place high-value information such as weather, calendar, timers, battery, workout and reminders near the top.
WatchOS 26 can add Smart Stack hints based on time, location, routines and sensor data. Apple gives examples such as a Backtrack suggestion in a remote area or a Pilates workout suggestion on arrival at a familiar studio. Hints are suggestions, not on-demand predictions; location-based behavior may require Location Services.
5. Use Workout instead of merely closing rings
Open Workout, choose an activity, set a goal or interval if needed, then start. Turn the Digital Crown or swipe to review metrics, and end and save the session when finished. Customize workout views so the metrics you actually use appear first.

Automatic detection is convenient for walks and similar activities, but start a workout manually when exact timing, route data or intervals matter. Heart-rate zones can help regulate effort more effectively than chasing one number.
Workout Buddy in watchOS 26 uses workout data and fitness history to provide spoken encouragement. It requires compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone and Apple Watch hardware, software and language settings; it is not universal to every watch running watchOS 26. Apple describes related requirements in its watchOS 26 announcement.
6. Pay from your wrist
- On iPhone, open Watch > My Watch > Wallet & Apple Pay.
- Tap Add Card and complete your bank’s verification.
- At a supported contactless reader, double-click the Apple Watch side button and hold the display near the terminal.
Card issuers, merchants, transit systems and countries have different requirements. Apple Pay, Apple Cash, transit cards and digital IDs are separate availability categories; check Apple’s regional table.
7. Handle small tasks with Timers, Reminders, Medications and Notes
These are high-frequency uses where reaching for a phone is inconvenient. Examples include “Set a 10-minute timer,” “Remind me to move the laundry in 30 minutes” and “Add milk to my grocery list.” You can also log medication and, in watchOS 26, create or view notes using Siri, dictation or the keyboard, including checklists.

Voice behavior varies with language, app configuration and whether the iPhone is nearby. Medication logging is a recordkeeping aid, not a replacement for prescribing instructions, a pharmacist or emergency help.
8. Follow directions and retrace your route
Start directions in Maps on the iPhone or watch, then follow the on-screen prompts and haptic taps. Backtrack is useful when returning along a route matters more than finding a new destination; watchOS 26 can surface a Backtrack hint in some remote, disconnected situations.
GPS performance changes with buildings, trees and terrain. Offline maps, cellular service and navigation have separate requirements, so do not treat the watch as your only route plan in remote areas.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Find your iPhone, items and people
Use the Find Devices control to ping a misplaced iPhone. Find My can also locate supported Apple devices and AirTag-equipped items, or show a friend or family member who has chosen to share their location. Precision Finding works only with compatible hardware, accounts and permissions; a nearby watch cannot locate every object automatically.

10. Use heart alerts and ECG responsibly
In the Heart app, follow the prompts for high- and low-heart-rate notifications and irregular-rhythm notifications when offered. To record an ECG, open ECG, rest a finger on the Digital Crown without pressing and remain still until the recording ends. Results can be reviewed or shared through Health.
These tools do not detect every heart condition and are not a substitute for a clinician. An alert is not automatically an emergency, but chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath or other concerning symptoms require prompt medical attention. ECG and rhythm features have model, age and regional restrictions.
11. Configure safety features before you need them
- On iPhone, open Watch > My Watch > Emergency SOS.
- Review Fall Detection settings.
- In the Health app, add emergency contacts and complete Medical ID.
- Learn how to trigger Emergency SOS manually.
Fall Detection, Crash Detection and Emergency SOS can be valuable, but detection can miss events or produce false positives. Emergency calling, cellular, satellite and location functions depend on model, country, network, visibility, battery and local conditions. They may contact emergency services or share information under supported conditions; they are not guaranteed rescue systems.
Set these up first
- Update the paired iPhone and Apple Watch to compatible software.
- Remove low-value notifications and configure Focus.
- Arrange Smart Stack widgets for weather, calendar, timers, battery and workouts.
- Set a sleep schedule and plan when you will charge.
- Review Vitals each morning and enable appropriate heart-rate alerts.
- Add a payment card to Wallet.
- Customize Workout metrics.
- Complete Medical ID, emergency contacts and Emergency SOS settings.
- Learn the iPhone-ping control and review Find My permissions.
Compatibility, iPhone and battery realities
Current Apple Watch models require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later, according to Apple’s U.S. product information. Some functions work over Wi-Fi or cellular without the iPhone nearby; others require the iPhone for setup, processing, synchronization or Apple Intelligence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGPS models generally need the iPhone nearby for calls and messages. GPS + Cellular models can provide more connectivity away from the phone, subject to a carrier plan and coverage. Cellular adds recurring cost and does not guarantee service.
Apple lists maximum estimates of up to 24 hours for Series 11, up to 18 hours for SE 3 and up to 42 hours for Ultra 3; actual endurance changes with cellular use, GPS workouts, calls, music streaming, notifications and the always-on display. Use Low Power Mode selectively, and do not assume a headline figure under every workload. Regional availability for ECG, Blood Oxygen, sleep-apnea notifications, emergency satellite features, Apple Pay, IDs and some Apple Intelligence functions is summarized in Apple’s feature-availability table.
