A minute repeater is a mechanical watch that chimes the time on demand: conventionally, low notes count the hours, paired notes count the quarter-hours, and high notes mark the remaining minutes. The seven watches in Time+Tide’s April 20, 2025 guide range from that core complication to elaborate combinations and a related sonnerie. Its prices are historical article-era figures, not current quotes or proof of availability.
What a minute repeater does
Jaeger-LeCoultre defines a minute repeater as a mechanical complication that chimes the exact time on demand when the wearer activates a sliding push button. In the conventional pattern described by Blancpain, low notes indicate hours, paired high-and-low notes indicate quarter-hours, and high notes indicate each remaining minute. The sequence lets a listener work out the time from the chimes.
In broad terms, activation sets a mechanism in motion that uses hammers to strike tuned gongs. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes small trebuchet hammers striking specific gongs. The sound is part of the function, but it is also an individual design characteristic: case material and gong construction can affect tone and resonance. A manufacturer’s description is not a comparative listening test, so no model below is ranked as the best-sounding.

How to compare the watches
Start with what actually chimes
Check whether the watch repeats the time only when activated, strikes automatically at intervals, or offers more than one striking mode. A minute repeater is an on-demand complication; a grand or petite sonnerie has selectable striking functions, and the Dufour in this list also offers manual minute-repeat activation. Those distinctions matter more than a shared label such as “chiming watch.”
Listen to the specific watch
Tone and resonance are subjective. A. Lange & Söhne product development director Anthony de Haas says that each minute repeater has its own sound and describes case material as influential alongside gongs and hammers. Treat that as the manufacturer’s design perspective, not an independent verdict. If sound is central to your choice, listen to the exact watch in person or find a reliable recording of that specific reference; this guide does not provide a comparative sound test.

Consider wearability and complication load
Case size and material, dial legibility, and wearing comfort are worth assessing in person. Then consider whether you want a minute repeater alone or a combination with a tourbillon, perpetual calendar or split-seconds chronograph. Added complications make a watch more functionally elaborate, but they also add displays and settings to understand and use. The available details in the 2025 guide do not establish comparable case dimensions or service costs across all seven models.
Verify the ownership details
Before committing, request a current quote and confirm availability, warranty and servicing arrangements with an authorized source or trusted specialist. For a rare or pre-owned example, establish its condition, provenance and service history. The April 2025 guide is a dated editorial shortlist, not a live inventory or market-wide price survey; its figures should not be treated as current offers.

Related chiming watches that are not like-for-like minute repeaters
Christopher Ward C1 Bel Canto Classic: an hourly sonnerie
Time+Tide included the C1 Bel Canto Classic as a more accessible way to experience an automatically chiming watch, but explicitly said it is not categorically a minute repeater. It chimes the hours as they pass—a sonnerie au passage—rather than letting the wearer request a full hours–quarters–minutes sequence. The guide’s April 2025 figures were US$4,615 on a five-link bracelet or a London studio pre-order figure of £3,745. These are historical figures, not current prices or availability.
A. Lange & Söhne ZEITWERK MINUTE REPEATER: a decimal pattern
This model is a useful technical comparison, though it is not one of the seven selections above. Rather than the conventional quarter-based pattern, it sounds hours, elapsed ten-minute periods and elapsed minutes. A. Lange & Söhne says the honey-gold case acts as a resonant body and that activation is blocked when less than twelve hours of power reserve remain. Its official page lists 771 parts for calibre L043.5. These are manufacturer specifications, not an independent sound assessment.

How much does a minute repeater cost?
The seven watches in Time+Tide’s April 20, 2025 list carry article-era prices from US$285,000 to CHF 1,050,000 (converted in the article to about US$1,284,980), alongside one model listed at price on application and a Dufour example represented by a reported 2021 auction sale. These unlike figures—quoted prices, a price-on-application listing and a historical transaction—are not a current market survey and should not be read as directly comparable valuations. How to choose from this shortlist
- Choose the Reverso if its reversible design, enamel and open view of the movement are the features you want to explore.
- Compare the Voyager and Excalibur if an openworked display and tourbillon appeal, while noting that the Excalibur adds a perpetual calendar.
- Consider the Biver if its carillon repeater, micro-rotor and decorative materials are central to your interest.
- Look at the Patek Philippe or A. Lange & Söhne if you want a repeater combined with calendar functions; the Patek also adds a split-seconds chronograph.
- Treat the Dufour as a distinct independent sonnerie with selectable striking modes and manual minute-repeat activation, rather than as a direct functional substitute for the other repeaters.
Use those differences to narrow the list, then make sound, fit, current availability and service arrangements part of the decision for the exact example you can actually acquire.
