It senses the coil’s magnetic field; current is inferred from that field rather than measured directly. The maker reports that changes of about 10 mA were discernible with averaging in the demonstrated setup, but this is not a certified accuracy rating or a substitute for a properly specified ammeter.
How the smartwatch ammeter works
The AppleWatchAmmeter project uses the watch’s magnetometer, normally associated with compass sensing, to detect the magnetic field produced by current in a nearby coil. A five-turn wire coil surrounds the watch in a holder, with the watch’s Z-axis—the direction perpendicular to its face—used for the reading. The project includes an STL holder intended for Apple Watch Series 5.
This is an indirect measurement: the sensor reports magnetic-field changes, and a calibrated relationship between field and current lets the user estimate current. Unlike a conventional ammeter, the watch does not measure current through a shunt in the circuit.
What the project’s numbers mean
The project author estimates that a five-turn circular coil about 48 mm in diameter would generate 131 µT at 1 A in the described geometry. The README gives roughly 100 µT/A as a practical approximation and shows a plotted sensitivity of 113 µT/A. These are the maker’s geometry estimate and reported observation, not universal constants: the magnetometer is off-center in the watch, so its position reduces sensitivity relative to an ideal centered arrangement. Calibration may improve the estimate for a particular build.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The author reports that averaging made current changes of about 10 mA discernible. That is resolution-like change detection in this demonstration, not a guaranteed accuracy specification. The repository and its 2024 Hackster.io coverage do not establish independent validation or certified instrument performance.
What you need and what to keep fixed
- A five-turn copper-wire coil: Wire gauge and insulation type are not specified by the project, so choose materials appropriate to your circuit and current.
- A holder: The published STL targets Apple Watch Series 5 and is intended to position the watch relative to the coil.
- Raw magnetometer readings: The project author names Sensor-App as one possible way to expose readings, but does not establish that a particular app is required.
- A stable setup: Keep the watch, coil and nearby magnetic objects from moving between readings. Changes in position alter the field measured, including the contribution from Earth’s magnetic field.
The sensor’s location matters: readings work best when the magnetometer is near the coil center. A device whose sensor sits farther from that point may be harder to use. The author suggests trying other watches if their magnetometer readings are accessible, but the published holder is specifically for Series 5.

Calibrate for the actual watch and coil
Do not assume the project’s sensitivity figure applies to a different watch, coil shape or placement. Establish the relationship using known current values while the coil and device remain fixed. The project notes that raw magnetometer data can be used and says dedicated calibration or zero-offset software could be written; it does not establish a required app or a validated calibration procedure for use as an instrument.
For a related smartphone coil experiment—not a validation of this watch build—phyphox’s guidance describes a linear calibration from two current-field data pairs. It also warns that moving the coil can invalidate calibration and that moving the phone changes the effect of Earth’s field. Treat this as educational guidance for a related setup, not a tested guarantee for the Apple Watch project.

Why it is limited to slow-changing DC
The project author says the setup detects DC current only: the magnetometer responds too slowly for AC current such as household power. It is therefore a demonstration for observing relatively steady current, not a method for measuring mains current or fast-changing signals.
Nearby magnetic objects can also change the Z-axis reading. Even a linear field-versus-current relationship under fixed conditions does not remove errors caused by movement, background fields or imperfect sensor alignment. For electrical work that needs dependable readings, use a meter with specifications appropriate to the circuit and measurement.

Choosing between the watch frame and another device
The project-specific route is to reproduce the five-turn coil and Series 5 holder. Adapting the idea to another watch or a phone is possible only if it provides accessible magnetometer data and can be held in a stable, useful position relative to the coil. The available evidence does not show that any smartwatch model is generally more accurate than another.
