Fratello reported that Omega records date this Speedmaster CK 2998-62 to April 30, 1963. The Dutch example is described as a one-owner watch with a Calibre 321, leaf-shaped hands and a black Base 1000 bezel. Its reported date and family history make it notable, but neither the date nor the model’s spaceflight story establishes that this particular watch was worn in space.
What makes this CK 2998-62 notable?
The date is the first point of interest: Fratello’s March 2023 account says Omega records place the featured watch on April 30, 1963, and that it came with an extract from the archives. The extract itself was not available for direct examination, so the date is best attributed to the account rather than presented as an independently verified finding. (Fratello, March 2023)
That 1963 date is compatible with the model’s production history. Phillips notes that production of the 2998 had ended in 1962, while examples could still be delivered in 1963. Production and delivery are different events: a watch associated with a 1963 date does not show that the reference was still being manufactured then. (Phillips)
Where the -62 sits in Speedmaster history
Omega identifies the CK 2998 as the second Speedmaster generation, first released in 1959. It moved away from the original Speedmaster’s broad-arrow look to a symmetric case, slender Alpha hands and a dark bezel. The -62 is described as the final iteration of the 2998 family, before the brief 105.002 and then the 105.003. (Omega, October 3, 2024; Fratello, March 2023)

Suffixes matter when identifying a vintage example. Dials, hands and bezels changed across the 2998 series, so the reference alone does not establish that every surviving watch has identical components or condition. Christie’s, for example, catalogued a different CK 2998-62 with a brown dial, a black bezel graduated to 500 and a 39 mm case. Details reported for the featured watch
Fratello described the example as offered by Amsterdam dealer Spiegelgracht Juweliers. The article reports a 39.7 mm bezel diameter and a 38.2 mm case diameter, along with leaf-shaped hour and minute hands, a white chronograph seconds hand with a short drop end, and a black Base 1000 bezel. The movement is identified as Omega Calibre 321, a column-wheel chronograph beating at 18,000 vibrations per hour. These are observations reported for this specific watch, not specifications that should be assumed for every CK 2998-62. (Fratello, March 2023)

The two reported diameters describe different parts of the watch: the bezel and the case. They should not be collapsed into a single case-size figure when comparing listings. Measurement methods and the exact points measured can also affect comparisons between vintage-watch descriptions.
What the owner story does—and does not—establish
According to Fratello’s account of the dealer’s story, the watch was offered by its first owner’s widow, and the owner had been involved in the Dutch Tulpenrallye. That account presents a compelling personal history, but the possible rally-use connection remains dealer-reported rather than independently confirmed. It is separate from the archive-based date claim.

Omega’s documented CK 2998 spaceflight story is also about a different watch. The company says astronaut Wally Schirra bought a CK 2998 personally and wore it on the Sigma 7 Mercury mission, launched October 3, 1962. That history explains the model family’s “First Omega in Space” association; it does not connect the featured Dutch watch to Schirra, NASA or a spaceflight. (Omega, October 3, 2024)
The distinction matters because the first Speedmaster worn in space was not the same milestone as NASA qualification. Fratello notes that the later 105.003 was the first Speedmaster tested and qualified by NASA as the Moonwatch. (Fratello, March 2023)

How to assess an archive extract and compare examples
An Omega archive extract can support claims about recorded production or delivery history. It should not be treated as proof of authenticity or ownership: Omega’s sample extract says it is based on information supplied by the client and that the watch was not examined. The specific extract associated with the featured watch was not directly reviewed, so its contents should not be inferred beyond what Fratello reported. (Fratello, March 2023)

- The originality and condition of the dial, hands, bezel, case and movement.
- Available service and repair records.
- Ownership documents, which address provenance separately from an archive extract’s historical information.
- How the case and bezel measurements were taken, so comparisons use like-for-like dimensions.
A Christie’s or Phillips listing can illustrate how a different watch was described and documented, but its papers, configuration or history cannot authenticate this example. (Christie’s; Phillips)
A modern reissue is a separate watch
Omega’s 2024 First Omega in Space reissue draws on the CK 2998 design lineage, but it is a modern model with its own movement and specifications. Its case, movement or technical details should not be used to describe the vintage CK 2998-62. (Omega, October 3, 2024)
