The regulating organ is the part of a conventional mechanical watch that sets its pace: the balance wheel and hairspring oscillate in time with the escapement, governing how quickly the gear train advances. Understanding the pair explains why a watch can gain or lose time, how watchmakers adjust it, and why materials and designs vary.
What is a watch’s regulating organ?
In a conventional mechanical movement, the regulating organ is the balance wheel and hairspring working together with the escapement. The escapement delivers impulses to the balance, keeping it oscillating. In turn, each swing lets the gear train advance by a controlled amount. The arrangement serves a role similar to a pendulum in a clock, but in a compact form suitable for a watch.
The balance is a wheel mounted on a staff; the hairspring is a fine coil attached at its inner end to that staff and at its outer end to the balance bridge or cock. The spring’s elasticity and active length, combined with the balance’s inertia, determine the duration of each oscillation. A shorter active length generally makes the watch run faster. Another route to changing the rate is to alter the balance’s inertia.
As one illustration rather than a general specification, Monochrome Watches described the balance in a pictured Montblanc Minerva 13.21 caliber as 11.40 mm in diameter, with a mass of 26 mg/cm², and a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour. These figures apply to that example only. Xavier Markl’s guide to the regulating organ was published in 2016 and updated in 2020.

What affects a watch’s rate?
Rate is not controlled by one variable alone. The balance receives energy from the escapement, and the watch’s behavior can also be influenced by beat adjustment, hairspring condition, position, temperature, magnetism, lubrication, and changes over time. That is why a timing problem is not always fixed simply by moving a regulator.
Position matters because gravity can affect how a movement behaves in different orientations. Magnetism can alter the behavior of some hairsprings, while temperature and wear can change performance over time. A watchmaker therefore assesses the movement and its condition rather than assuming that every fast- or slow-running watch needs the same adjustment.

How hairspring materials and shapes differ
Material and geometry are engineering choices, not a universal ranking of which spring is best. Markl’s 2020 update describes several approaches and their intended properties; its statements about what was usual or common reflect that article’s period, not a current market-share survey.
Traditional alloys and newer materials
The guide describes Glucydur, a copper, beryllium, and steel alloy, as a usual modern balance-wheel material at the time of its update. Its cited qualities include low thermal expansion, hardness, and non-magnetic behavior. It describes Nivarox iron-nickel hairsprings as common in that period, with elasticity relatively insensitive to temperature.

Silicon components are discussed for low mass, anti-magnetic behavior, flexibility, temperature resistance, low lubrication needs, and precision manufacture. The article also gives examples of other approaches: Rolex’s Parachrom alloy, Cartier’s Zerodur concept hairspring, TAG Heuer’s carbon-composite hairspring, and Patek Philippe’s Silinvar Spiromax. These are examples of design choices, not evidence that one material outperforms all others in every movement.
Markl’s article reports that Swatch Group unveiled its Nivachron hairspring in 2019 and claimed a reduction in residual magnetic influence by a factor of 10 to 20, depending on caliber. That is a company claim as relayed in the article, with the caliber qualification attached; it should not be treated as a universal result for every watch using the material.

Flat springs, Breguet overcoils, and three-dimensional forms
Most movements used flat spiral hairsprings according to the guide. A Breguet overcoil bends the outer coil upward and inward. Its design aim is more symmetrical breathing, supporting isochronism—the consistency of the spring’s period across different amplitudes.
Helical and spherical hairsprings also seek improved isochronism, but their three-dimensional shapes are more complex to manufacture and take up more space. A more elaborate shape is therefore a trade-off, not an automatic guarantee of better timekeeping in every finished watch.

Regulator-index and free-sprung balances
These two designs differ in how a watchmaker adjusts rate. The regulator-index system changes the active length of the hairspring; a free-sprung balance keeps that length constant and changes the balance’s inertia instead.
| Design | How rate is adjusted | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Regulator-index | Pins hold the hairspring; moving the index changes its active length. | Shortening the active length makes the watch run faster. |
| Free-sprung | The spring is not held by regulator pins and retains a constant active length; screws or weights alter balance inertia. | The guide describes it as more complex to work on. Removing the index also removes one possible source of error and avoids shock-induced index movement. |
The guide describes annular balances as widely used in its period and notes that screws or weights can help with poising or adjustment. As with its material-prevalence descriptions, this is not an independently verified survey of current production.
What a tourbillon is intended to do
A tourbillon places the balance, balance spring, and escapement in a rotating carriage. Abraham-Louis Breguet patented the mechanism in 1801. Its intended purpose is to average errors associated with different positions as the carriage turns. That engineering aim does not establish that every tourbillon will improve real-world accuracy for every wearer; results depend on the particular watch and how it is used.
Alternatives to the traditional balance spring
Markl’s guide, updated in 2020, also surveys approaches that replace or depart from the traditional balance-spring oscillator. These include high-frequency or low-amplitude systems, blade resonators, acoustic resonators, flexible blades, and the Zenith Defy Lab’s monolithic silicon oscillator, presented in 2017. The article also discusses Ulysse Nardin’s Freak Next concept in 2019. Those references document the guide’s historical account; they do not establish the current production status of each design.
What to take from the designs
- The conventional regulating organ is the balance wheel and hairspring acting with the escapement.
- Rate can be changed through hairspring active length or balance inertia, depending on the adjustment design.
- Materials and spring shapes balance properties such as temperature behavior, magnetic resistance, manufacturability, space, and adjustment method; no option described here is best in every respect.
- Because several conditions affect rate, diagnosing a watch’s timekeeping is a movement-level task, not a one-variable fix.
For a fuller technical treatment of the balance, spring, materials, shapes, adjustment, and unusual oscillator solutions, see Markl’s complete guide. A concise companion explanation appears in Brice Goulard’s 2020 overview of the regulating organ.
