Choose the standard version if you want an open fit and mostly listen in quieter places. For most iPhone owners who want more flexibility, the ANC model is the stronger value: its extra $50 adds noise-control modes, wireless charging, a Find My case speaker, and eligibility for certain software features. If your priority is maximum isolation, AirPods Pro 3 are a better fit.

AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC compared
Apple sells two versions. Reviews that discuss “AirPods 4” as one product can obscure the features reserved for the more expensive model.

Fit and comfort: open design is the central trade-off
Neither version seals the ear canal with interchangeable silicone tips. That can feel less plugged-up and let more of your surroundings remain audible than sealed in-ear earbuds. It also means there is less passive noise blocking, and fit depends heavily on ear shape. Some people may find the earbuds comfortable and secure; others may experience movement, sound leakage, weak bass, or an uneven sound balance.
The ANC model cannot create the physical seal of AirPods Pro. If you want dependable isolation on a plane or noisy commute, the open fit is a real limitation, not a setting that can be fixed in software. Fit matters enough to be a primary buying criterion: an affordable pair that stays comfortable is more useful than a feature-rich one that slips out or causes fatigue. Sound quality for music, podcasts, and calls
Apple lists a custom high-excursion driver, high-dynamic-range amplifier, and Adaptive EQ. These specifications describe the hardware and processing; they do not guarantee the same sound for every listener. With an open fit, the way each earbud sits can change perceived bass and consistency. A good fit can make music sound more balanced; a loose fit can weaken low frequencies. Spoken-word content is a natural use case for an open earbud, but sound quality in a noisy place will also depend on how much outside sound reaches you.
Apple also lists Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. Its effect depends on supported content and personal preference; it is an optional listening mode, not a reason to expect every recording to sound different. Apple’s listed Lossless Audio and ultra-low-latency audio support require a wired USB-C connection and compatible content or apps. They are not ordinary wireless Bluetooth lossless playback. What the $50 ANC upgrade changes
The standard model has no ANC, Transparency mode, or Adaptive Audio. The ANC model adds all three, plus Conversation Awareness. ANC can be useful for reducing steady background sounds such as engine or air-conditioning rumble. But the open fit lets in more sound than a sealed earbud, so do not expect the same isolation as AirPods Pro, particularly around voices, wind, and busy public spaces. Apple says its ANC is up to twice the ANC of the previous-generation AirPods 4 ANC claim baseline shown in its comparison materials. That is Apple’s own comparative claim, not an independent measurement of how well the earbuds block a particular sound. Apple’s comparison page
The upgrade is broader than noise cancellation. The ANC model’s case adds wireless charging, Apple Watch charger support, and a speaker that can help locate the case with Find My. It also enables Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, and—if all eligibility requirements are met—Live Translation.
Smart features: strongest when you use Apple devices
Pairing, switching, Siri, and Spatial Audio
AirPods 4 are most useful as smart earbuds when paired with Apple devices. Apple lists fast pairing, automatic switching between supported devices, audio sharing, Siri, and Personalized Spatial Audio. They can also work as ordinary Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but that does not provide full Apple ecosystem functionality. The H2 chip supports Siri, Voice Isolation, and Siri Interactions. These are distinct functions: Siri handles voice requests; Siri Interactions let you respond to supported prompts with gestures; Voice Isolation processes microphone audio for calls. Availability of particular interactions depends on the connected device and software, and Apple Intelligence features require compatible hardware and software. The presence of the H2 chip does not mean every feature works on every iPhone.
Conversation Awareness and Voice Isolation
On the ANC model, Conversation Awareness lowers media volume and adjusts listening when you begin speaking. It can be handy for a brief exchange in a shop or office, but may interrupt playback if you often talk or sing to yourself. Voice Isolation is a separate call feature: it is intended to help your voice stand out from background sound. Live Translation has several conditions
As of August 18, 2026, Apple lists Live Translation for AirPods 4 with ANC when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 or later. It is not a feature of the $129 standard model, and the earbuds do not translate independently. Current firmware, supported languages, and regional availability also matter. Apple lists selected languages including U.S. and U.K. English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified and Traditional Mandarin; support can vary by region and language. Battery life and charging
Apple rates the standard AirPods 4 for up to five hours of listening per charge and up to 30 hours with the case. For the ANC model, Apple lists up to five hours per charge with ANC disabled, up to four hours with ANC enabled, and up to 30 hours with the case. The four-hour ANC rating per charge is worth considering if you expect to listen through long flights or extended work sessions without a case break. Both cases charge over USB-C. Only the ANC case adds Qi wireless charging, Apple Watch charger support, and a Find My speaker, which can make the extra cost worthwhile even if you use ANC only occasionally.

Apple lists IP54 dust, sweat, and water resistance for AirPods 4 and their charging cases. That rating does not make them waterproof or suitable for swimming, showering, or prolonged heavy water exposure. After exercise, wipe and dry the earbuds, and do not charge them while wet. Follow Apple’s cleaning instructions. If battery wear eventually becomes the problem, do not assume the batteries are user-replaceable.
The open fit may work for some workouts, but ear shape affects stability. If the buds move during exercise, that can affect sound and make them easier to lose; buyers who need a particularly secure sports fit may prefer an earbud designed for that use.

Compatibility and hearing-health limits
AirPods 4 can connect to non-Apple Bluetooth devices, but the value of automatic switching, Siri integration, Spatial Audio, Find My, and other ecosystem features is reduced outside Apple’s supported devices. If Android is your primary phone, do not buy them solely for those smart features; an Android-focused model may offer more relevant app support, controls, and customization.
Neither AirPods 4 model includes the Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, or Hearing Protection features Apple lists for supported AirPods Pro models. Should you buy AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3?
Apple listed AirPods Pro 3 at $249 in the U.S. purchase flow referenced with its ANC product listing, $70 above AirPods 4 with ANC at the U.S. Apple price checked August 18, 2026. Pro 3 are the more sensible Apple choice if you want sealed silicone-tip isolation, stronger ANC positioning, the listed hearing features, or heart-rate sensing during workouts. For a noisy plane or transit ride, sealed earbuds are generally a better category match than an open-fit design. For Android-first use, consider Android-focused alternatives; for secure sports use, compare workout-oriented designs. Current prices for non-Apple alternatives are not established here, so compare them at the point of purchase rather than relying on stale price assumptions.

Which AirPods 4 should you buy?
Choose standard AirPods 4 if
- You want the lowest-cost current AirPods and prefer not to use silicone tips.
- You mainly listen at home, in an office, or in quieter settings.
- You value Apple pairing and switching but do not need ANC, wireless charging, or a Find My case speaker.
Choose AirPods 4 with ANC if
- You want some noise reduction without a sealed in-ear fit.
- You will use Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, wireless charging, or case locating.
- You have compatible Apple Intelligence hardware and may benefit from Live Translation, subject to its software, language, and region requirements.
Choose AirPods Pro 3 or another earbud if
- You prioritize maximum isolation, a secure sealed fit, or supported hearing features; consider AirPods Pro 3.
- You need longer listening between charges with ANC, or you frequently listen for more than the ANC model’s up-to-four-hour per-charge rating.
- You use Android as your primary phone or need an exercise-specific fit; compare options designed around those needs.
