Amazfit GTR 4 review: modern smarts, vintage feel

The Amazfit GTR 4 blends classic round-watch styling with GPS and extensive fitness tracking, but its smartwatch features remain a key trade-off.

The Amazfit GTR 4 pairs a traditional 46 mm round-watch design with a bright AMOLED display, extensive workout tracking and dual-band GPS. Its strongest appeal is fitness tracking and battery life beyond a daily charge; its weaker side is a less complete smartwatch experience, particularly for third-party apps and contactless payments. Stuff’s hands-on review dates to 2022, so its observations should be read alongside Amazfit’s later Zepp OS updates—not as a fresh assessment of every feature or current firmware.

What the Amazfit GTR 4 is—and who it suits

The GTR 4 is a fitness-oriented smartwatch in a classic round case. Amazfit lists a 46 mm case, an aluminum-alloy middle frame, a 1.43-inch AMOLED display with 466 × 466 resolution, a 475 mAh battery and 5 ATM water resistance. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test findings. Amazfit’s GTR 4 specifications

It makes the most sense for someone who wants a conventional-looking watch for everyday wear but still wants GPS workouts, broad sports tracking and smart notifications. It is a less obvious choice if a watch’s value depends on a deep app ecosystem, convenient message replies or paying at a terminal from the wrist.

Design and display: classic shape, mixed durability impressions

In Stuff’s September 2022 review, updated in October 2022, Tom Morgan-Freelander praised the GTR 4’s slim profile, classic chronograph styling and crisp circular screen. The tested unit’s brown leather strap suited the dressier look; the standard 22 mm quick-release band also makes strap changes practical. The watch is still a fairly large 46 mm proposition, so its round styling does not make it a small or discreet option.

Stuff’s reviewer also reported that the screen picked up a small scrape after a few weeks of careful use and that the buttons felt less premium than the rest of the design. Those are impressions from one review unit, not proof that every GTR 4 will scratch or that its controls will wear in the same way. If screen protection matters to you, consider a compatible protector and verify the model fit before buying.

Smart features: useful basics, limited platform depth

Stuff found Zepp OS straightforward to navigate and noted notifications, widgets or cards, customizable watch faces, music storage and Bluetooth audio support. The review’s main qualification was breadth: replies were limited to canned responses, most pre-installed apps did not sync with third-party services, the app store offered a limited selection, and the watch lacked contactless payments. These are findings from Stuff’s 2022 review, not a fresh audit of the current software.

Amazfit has since documented substantial software additions. Its Zepp OS 3.0 update page lists control-center, widget and app-list changes, phone Do Not Disturb syncing, breathing-training options, running plans, triathlon and multisport modes, interval-training features for some sports, and connections to heart-rate belts and cycling power meters. In an August 2024 notice, Amazfit announced a Zepp OS 3.5 rollout for the GTR 4 and GTR 4 Limited Edition. Listed features included Zepp Flow, readiness and HRV features, customizable running plans, offline maps, heart-rate broadcast, running power, additional sport options, a night display, Android image-message syncing and a redesigned music widget. These announcements update the context of the 2022 review but do not establish the latest firmware available today on every watch or in every region. Nor do the listed features erase the specific trade-offs Stuff described around app selection and contactless payment.

Fitness tracking and GPS: a broad toolkit, with dated test evidence

Stuff described more than 150 sports modes, some automatic activity detection and strength-workout rep and set recording. It also reported a fourth-generation PPG sensor for heart rate, blood oxygen, breathing rate, stress, steps and sleep. That mode count and sensor description reflect the 2022 review; they are not a current independent feature audit or a measure of medical accuracy.

Amazfit Active 2 Premium Smart Watch 1.32" Sapphire Glass, GPS, iOS/Android
  • STYLISH DESIGN, BRIGHT DISPLAY: The sleek stainless steel build blends classic style with workout durability, while the bright 1.32" AMOLED display keeps your data easy to read, even under bright sunlight.
  • PRECISE HEART RATE AND SLEEP TRACKING: Amazfit's BioTracker technology tracks your heart rate and sleep data with accuracy that previous sensors just can't match.
  • UP TO 10 DAYS OF BATTERY LIFE: With long battery life that lasts up to 10 days with typical use, nightly recharges are a thing of the past.
  • FREE MAPS WITH TURN DIRECTIONS: Stay on-track with free downloadable maps, and get turn-by-turn guidance on-screen or via your Bluetooth headphones. Enjoy ski maps for global resorts, including guidance for cable cars, slopes, and more.
  • FASTER AND MORE ACCURATE GPS TRACKING: 5 satellite positioning systems ensure fast GPS connection and accurate positioning whenever you're out running, walking, cycling or hiking.

The review’s GPS tests were encouraging but limited to the routes used. The reviewer reported good performance on a central London trek and a partly tree-covered run, with a brief tracking problem in a railway-station concourse when overhead coverage was lost. The watch was described at the time as using dual-band, circularly polarized GPS and five satellite systems, with a sixth expected by over-the-air update. Amazfit’s current product specification lists dual-band positioning and six satellite systems. Neither that specification nor a few routes establishes a universal accuracy percentage. Amazfit’s GTR 4 positioning specifications

There is also a change in sensor compatibility worth noting: Stuff said chest straps were unsupported at the time of its review, while Amazfit’s Zepp OS 3.0 update material later documents connections to heart-rate belts and cycling power meters. The later announcement establishes support in that update context, but not that every accessory model or device configuration will work identically.

Battery life: manufacturer maxima versus the review’s experience

Amazfit advertises up to 14 days in typical use, up to 24 days in battery-saver mode and up to 50 days in clock mode. For GPS use, its stated maxima are up to 25 hours in accuracy mode, 44 hours in balanced mode and 52 hours in power-saving mode. These are manufacturer figures; Amazfit says actual duration varies with settings and conditions. Amazfit’s GTR 4 battery specifications

Amazfit Balance 3 Smart Watch, 1.5" AMOLED Sapphire Glass, iOS/Android
  • DUAL-BAND GPS & OFFLINE MAPS: Navigate confidently with dual-band positioning and six satellite systems. Use offline maps, turn-by-turn navigation, and automatic rerouting to stay on track without your phone.
  • 21-DAY BATTERY: Get up to 21 days of battery life on a single charge, and never worry about forgetting your charger on trips. Enjoy long battery life performance from work, to workouts, to weekend trips.
  • AMOLED SCREEN & BUILT-IN FLASHLIGHT: A large 1.5" AMOLED screen protected by sapphire glass is easy to read in bright daylight or night. Stay safe and visible in low-light conditions with the built-in white or tactical red flashlight.
  • NO SUBSCRIPTION APP: Health, recovery, and workout data is free to access in the included Zepp App. Track calories and protein goals.
  • APP CONNECTIONS & HYROX TRAINING: Use fitness apps like Strava, TrainingPeaks, Intervals.ICU to share workouts. Improve HYROX training with built-in HYROX training plans and Virtual Pace simulations.

Stuff’s own test suggested roughly seven to fourteen days depending on use, but the review period was too short to validate the full advertised claim. Treat its range as that reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee for your notification, display, sensor and GPS settings. GPS mode matters especially for long activities, so the shorter GPS-use figures are more relevant than typical-use estimates if you record lengthy outdoor sessions.

Verdict: buy it for the watch-and-fitness balance, not a full smartwatch platform

Stuff gave the GTR 4 4/5 in its 2022 review and summed up the compromise this way: “It’s more a good-looking fitness watch (with a few smarts) than a fully-fledged smartwatch, though.” That remains a useful framing: the hardware and fitness focus are more persuasive than the depth of its smart ecosystem. The later Zepp OS updates add meaningful capabilities, but the available update notices do not confirm today’s regional firmware status or a change to the app and payment limitations identified in the review.

Choose the GTR 4 if the round design, GPS workouts, broad activity coverage and fewer-than-daily charging expectations matter more than a rich app catalog or wrist payments. If you are weighing it against current alternatives, compare like for like on app and payment support, GPS and sensor compatibility, battery under comparable settings, screen protection, size and current regional price; there is no current head-to-head test here to declare a category winner.
